There have been very few events throughout my lifetime that I feel have impacted or inspired me with such noteworthiness and that I know will change my outlook on the world and affect me forever. One of those events occurred when I traveled to Portugal, my parent’s homeland. From this excursion in 2007, I learned the importance of family, most importantly the distant kind. It provided me with a totally different perspective on the world and how large and extended one’s family can really be; even across cultures and continents. I felt so fortunate learning this lesson at a young age and growing to appreciate the ideals I was brought up with as a child. The family I have in Portugal has always been there; however, their faces have aged and are blemished with the passing of many years and difficult times. Some newer additions to the family have started to become a part of the modern Portuguese workforce. One of my cousins was studying to become a veterinarian and another was working as a nurse at the local hospital of Montalegre (or “Happy Mountain”). Living in the U.S.A as a child born to a Portuguese family, I have always longed to see the faces of those who I knew were supposed to be close to me, but had no idea where or if they existed. It will be four years ago this July that I first stepped onto Portuguese soil, and the experiences I had there were exhilarating to say the least. The food, the culture, and the people were at the core of my special journey. I traveled with my family through the countryside and the province of Tras Os Montes (or “Behind the Mountains”), happily saying hello to all the people we encountered, knowing that this was the “old country” (as my father refers to it). One of the great parts about goin... ... middle of paper ... ...eed support and love you unconditionally “no matter what”. Who wouldn’t want to be part of a family? The main part of a family is the cohesion, and, even more so, the special bond they all share. When I heard about Mass Academy and went to shadow day, I knew there was a special bond between all those who attended the school. The students at MAMS treated each other as they would treat a brother or sister. The teachers were supportive of a student much like a parent. Everyone had this special bond. This is something that I admire and hope to be a part of. It is a learning environment and a support system like this that can help a student eager to make a difference in the world achieve true potential. The omnipresent love of family and friends is what keeps people together, and in this togetherness and strength as community we are able to achieve the once, impossible.
The style that James Sweet convey in his book, Domingos Alvares. African Healing and Intellectual History and of the Atlantic World, is by providing multiple perspectives of people who had an interaction with Domingo Alvarez in the Atlantic World. . Within the seven chapters, this multilayered perspectives give a to the circumstances that led to Domingos Alvares arrival in Lisbon, the accusations of witchcraft, and the banishment to Portugal. The perspectives of Ignacio Correa Barbosa and Leonor de Oliveira convey the connection the healing to exile and slavery that were pertinent terms in the Atlantic World. In Dahomey and Obscurity chapter, Sweet contextualizes the effect of Dahomian and Portuguese government's power in turning Domingos
In the written piece “Noble Savages” by John Hemming he give an historic account of different European adventures in the Brazilian mainland. He also tells some of the stories about the Brazilian people that were taken back to Europe about the savages’ way of life.
Although many families today are dysfunctional and fragmented, “Cakes” serves to show the importance of unity within a family. No matter what we do or where we go, family is something that will carry us and define who we are. Family serves as a building block or blueprint for success. The values that a family instills allow the “strength” of an individual to prevail. In this short story, La Puma is able to highlight the role of family as an educator, and protector, and depict the importance of family values in Italian-American immigrant culture.

Everyone has a story, a pivotal moment in their life that started to mold them into the person they are today and may even continue to mold you to the person that you will become, I just had mine a little bit earlier than others. When I was three years old my brother became a burn survivor. It may seem too early for me to remember, but I could never forget that day. Since then, I have grown, matured and realized that what my family and I went through has been something of a benefit to be and an experience that has helped me in deciding what I want to do with the rest of my life.
The “enterro do bacalhau” serves as an excellent illustration of the unique and iconic status of cod in Portugal, because no other food has been so invested in Portuguese popular culture. The Portuguese learned to rely on this fish in times in need, which ultimately earned it the title of the “faithful friend,” a moniker that is very elucidative of this standing relationship. (Sobral 2011:633) While proof of the continuity of this association between cod and the Portuguese is in the consistent presence of salted and dried cod in the kitchens of the people, it has been a part of the socio-political lives of the Portuguese for centuries.
On a cool Saturday evening, a couple of neighborhood friends and I was outside playing a game of kickball. As we played, laughter and excitement filled the air as we ran from base to base. While playing an abnormal pain struck my right eye. I thought maybe it was just a minor pain that will go away. So I proceeded with the game of kickball. After a while the pain began to worsen and I started to get worried. I knew for a fact something wasn’t right so I ran into the house to inform my parents.
For the most part, individuals go to visit family and companions, for their occupation, or to enjoy a reprieve from the exhausting dull of the place where they grew up. Be that as it may, amid the late summer of 2014, I made a trip to Santa Cruz, Bolivia, a little city with numerous impeded individuals, on a mission trip with my church. It was truly an eye opening experience. The things I encountered demonstrated to me proper methodologies to acknowledge new places and the general population who rehearse distinctive ways of life.
When I returned home from a mission trip in April of 2012 things didn’t seem the same. My body felt as if it had been run over by a herd of elephants. I looked like a balloon with the swelling that had taken over my body. I went to school for a week and then I could not return, I was in so much pain, I didn't know it was possible to feel like this. Little did I know this would be the rest of my life. Months after my mission trip, in the month of August in 2012 I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and Rheumatoid Arthritis, two painful diseases that I will live with for the rest of my life.
A Life Changing Moment - Short Story Blood splattered high on the walls from the force of the blows. Even though the screams of the two children had long since ceased, Linda kept stabbing and slashing, her breath rasping in her throat from the effort entailed, only as her strength began to wane and her mental state start to alter did she slowly become aware that she and the room were covered in nauseating, thick scarlet red blood and in the distance of her darkness she could hear the echoing wail of police sirens! She slumped back exhausted and began to sob, slowly at first, then like a torrential downpour. "How do you plead? " She barely heard the words, not even realising they were directed at
Everybody have a significant moment in their lives’, in which they can vividly recall. Graduating high school was one significant moment in my life that I can remember every graphic detail and feeling that occurred. Flashbacks come and go as I try to relive the experience, however, one can’t experience the happiness I felt walking across the stage, unless I start from the events leading up to this special moment.
The most important event in my life has been attending MASC’s summer leadership camp in 2012 and 2013. Those ten days were perhaps the most beneficial days of my life.
Change is when something happens in your life and from that moment on nothing will be the same ever again. You don’t notice changes until you go back to an old place that you have memories before the change occurred. Going back to these places can either fill you with sadness because it reminds you of what you lost. Or it can fill you with happiness because it can remind you that there is always a place that hasn’t been affected by the change. It all depends on what has changed.
The night’s darkness blanketed the cabin and the landscape like a mother and her newly born child. The winter snow on the ground illuminated the moon’s light and made it very easy for seeing into the distance, but there was nothing to see; for miles and miles tall pines and rolling terrain contained nothing but Mother Nature. I lay silently in my bed and watched out my window the snow drifting methodically to the ground. The tall pines stood watching over the cabin and their shadows seemed to have a life of their own. The howling wind caused an occasional screech and moan of the old wooden door. I was alone in my cabin except for the wicked cold, which made me a number of times reach for my blanket as it nipped at my exposed body. I trembled and my teeth began to chatter as I read my newspaper by the candlelight. As I began reading I came across an article about an escaped madman from a Maine jail. I looked at the picture and for some reason I thought I knew the man, but in reality I knew I did not. I continued to read as I tried to pass time as I expected the arrival of my girlfriend, Michelle, who like myself, was looking for an escape from this harsh world. This isolated spot in Northern Maine had great privacy and seldom had visitors. I lay patiently awake and a wait a knocking on my door.
While most people would probably say something along the lines of a national scandal, natural disaster, or other national news as the most important event of their life time, mine would have to be moving 3 times. Moving really changes your perspective on things, especially after several times. The first time was the easiest. I was born in Louisville, Kentucky and I lived there for 6 years. It was the easiest move since I was so young and didn’t really understand what was going on.
