The artwork, The Emerald Empire, was created by Zara Mahmood. This artwork is a surrealist piece of art because it includes an irrational juxtaposition of images. The artwork was created between November 2015 to December 2015. Several events occurred during this time period, like the ISIS attack on Paris, thee shooting in California, election debates and Thanksgiving. There many literal objects in my art like mountains/volcanoes, a body of water and an imaginary creature. When I first look at the artwork I notice the creature because it has dark color value, I also notice the castle because it has vivid colors that make it look realistic. Many types of colors are used in the art, some of them are warm analogous colors and others are cool analogous colors but the creature has shaded pencil colors which makes it stand out. Shapes are also incorporated in the art like triangles, curvy lines and circles, these shapes have smooth/bumpy edges. Many colors were used and they were contrasted because they were either warm or cool analogous colors. The value is contrasted because the overall landscape has vivid colors but the value is dark. The effect that the color brings is fear/ evil because it has very dark colors. Shapes are also implied throughout the artwork in many ways, the landscape uses many frottage's to incorporate shape. The curvy line are very important because they add the effect of the body of water. Texture is also an important element because it brings the creature "alive" and makes the landscape look real. The house is surrounded by green grass which makes the image more realistic and the trees in the background and the tree in the foreground create a sense of depth. The image is quite well spaced out, due to a vast amount of area situated between objects. There is a visual equality in the symmetrical image. There is a contrast between the colours of the image to draw attention to the house. The image looks to be taken in the dusk of the afternoon, where there is not much natural light, which creates a darker tone. The main emphasis of the image is the house, which seems to be quite different when the image is first seen by a viewer. The texture helps emphasize the main focal point seeing though it is quite smooth, the colour also creates a mood towards the image and atmosphere in the image. The texture of the paint is smooth and flows very nicely the paintings composition is primarily bundled into the bottom right half of the image. The wings and legs of the animals as well as and table help form an invisible sloping line across the painting.

Most of the shapes are formed by shifts in colors and line because the canvas are two-dimensional. The viewer can observe that the painting is dominated by greys, browns, ochers, and other natural colors such as green and yellow to give the scene a more nature-like look. All the components and objects painted in this piece appear to have the same texture and color as the ones found in real life, such as rocks suggesting a rough hard texture and clouds being soft, which probably means that Vernet took in consideration real landscapes and places he might have seen in real life. While using different shades of grey, and painting dark clouds, Vernet was able to convince that a storm was approaching but he also decided to add source of light coming from the upper left corner by using a golden yellow color to create a sense of warmth, which creates a nice contrast between the light and the coldness from the overall shadows that seem to dominate the artwork, creating variety; however, the repetition of colors such as greys gave the whole piece a sense of unity and they also express the shadows of a stormy day. This painting consists of regular lines as well as implied lines. Some of the regular lines that have been included are flowing, curved lines, such as the Earth that the woman is sitting on top of. Additionally, the background is made of small scenes that have been outlined by a dotted line, which places emphasis on the scenes. Besides regular and visible lines, there are a few implied lines in this painting. For instance, the woman's eyes are looking forward, so there is an implied line to the audience. Additionally, another implied line would be the woman's right arm, which is pointed towards her headpiece, while her left arm is pointed towards the earth. Nonetheless, this painting is not intense; although it does have splashes of color, this painting does not have a bright saturation. Instead, this painting is slightly dull, which makes this painting appear vintage. Additionally, since this background is a dark color, it makes the rest of painting, especially the headpiece, stand out. Besides colors and lines, even though this is a painting and there is no physical texture, there is invented texture. Upon viewing this painting, underneath the earth where the woman is sitting on, there are roots as well as grass, which give texture and feeling to the painting. At the left-bottom corner of the painting, the viewer is presented with a rugged-orangish cliff and on top of it, two parallel dark green trees extending towards the sky. This section of the painting is mostly shadowed in darkness since the cliff is high, and the light is emanating from the background. A waterfall, seen originating from the far distant mountains, makes its way down into a patch of lime-green pasture, then fuses into a white lake, and finally becomes anew, a chaotic waterfall(rocks interfere its smooth passage), separating the latter cliff with a more distant cliff in the center. At the immediate bottom-center of the foreground appears a flat land which runs from the center and slowly ascends into a cliff as it travels to the right. Green bushes, rough orange rocks, and pine trees are scattered throughout this piece of land. Since this section of the painting is at a lower level as opposed to the left cliff, the light is more evidently being exposed around the edges of the land, rocks, and trees. Although the atmosphere of the landscape is a chilly one, highlights of a warm light make this scene seem to take place around the time of spring.

The piece uses a gorgeous palette of green, blue, and yellow. Creating a calm and relaxed tone that flows throughout the whole painting. The sole cypress tree is the focal point of the piece. Dark green attracts the eye from the overall light colored piece but does not distract the viewer completely since used sparingly. The brushstrokes used to create the piece bring it to life. The piece goes beyond the canvas by engaging the imagination of what else is there but left unseen. I picture a river to the right of the wheat field which eventually leads to a small town on the other side of the blue mountains. To the left I see the rest of the wheat fields for miles on end with farmers plowing and children playing. I feel the wind blowing, the clouds moving, and the trees rustling. The reason for this is that the inanimate or still objects in the artwork are dominantly three dimensional with illusions of depth and volume, as well as, colors or shades with light values and dark values. The three most dominant principles of design are emphasis, contrast, and balance. The reason for is this is that the artwork displays a contrast and difference towards the values and colors to direct focus and interest onto the work of art. The artwork dominantly consists of these elements and principles to emphasize the relationship and true nature between the insects, brittle leaves, fruits among the inanimate pillar draped in blue cloth.
The implied sunlight is natural that has an illusion of coming through the clouds, the reality of the sunlight seems to dry out the land. Yet, it symbolizes the overcoming of the end of a drought on the rural crop lands. The colors of neutral tones are used predominately throughout the landscape. The brown neutral-toned houses are surrounded by wisps of yellow, overgrown, grass which seem to represent the destruction that mankind has caused, in turn, is suppressing nature and holding back the potential beauty it could unleash. The dull grass and trees lack vivid colors and present a lackluster mood. Yet, the yellow grass draws you to the horizon of the painting. This seems to resemble the hopefulness of a new crop in the dry crop land. The yellow grass shows the harsh results of a drought that has been sprinkled with blue horizontal streaks. The blue horizontal streaks demonstrate puddles of water as if it has recently rained. The blue color emits a feeling of calmness as if the uneasiness of the drought season has been lifted. The colors lack blending and create a blunt contrast appearance. The dark shadow in the bottom right corner mysteriousness and an ominous feeling of an omniscient presence.
