Did you know that video games can badly effect your life? Video games have been around since November 29, 1972 (Jeff Tyson 2000). Video games are fun and entertaining, but they could also badly effect people’s lives. The least of importance are the studies from Hope M. Cummings from the University of Michigan, and Elizabeth A. Vandewater from the University of Texas, that show video games can make people spend less time doing homework (2007). During the school year 2002-2003 they collected a survey from nearly 1,500 U.S. kids and teens from ages 10 to 19 (Cummings & Vandewater 2007). About 80 percent of the percentage were boys and more than 36 percent of the group reported playing video games (Cummings & Vandewater 2007). Adolescent gamers spent 30 percent less time reading and 34 percent less time doing homework compared to non-gamers (Cummings & Vandewater 2007). The next of importance are the studies from Dr. Mohamed K. Khan, which say that one of the most common health issues that is faced by most individuals is obesity. More than third of the nation’s children are overweight or obese according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Erica Loop 2011). About an hour and 13 minutes playing video games are spent by kids (Erica Loop 2011). Addicted gamers often confront this problem because they sit in one place and relaxing for a long time (Roy D’Silva 2012). Many health hazards can develop to addicted gamers (Roy D’Silva 2012). One of the many health hazards can be by playing video games throughout the night which can develop insomnia. (Roy D’Silva 2012). Another common health problem that addicted gamers face is that people can get back pains. (Roy D’Silva 2012). When I play video games for a long time I get bad headaches. The greatest of importance are the studies from the ISU Distinguished Professor of Psychology, Craig Anderson, that show video games that are violent can make people have violent behavior (2010). Anderson and his team tested the effects of violent video game play on the behaviors, thoughts, and feelings of the individuals by using meta-analytic procedure (2010). New longitudinal data which provided further confirmation that playing violent video games could make some people violent were included in the research (Iowa State University 2010). Anderson said that they were not huge effects but also not small ones (2010). Violent video game effects are significant in both Eastern and Western cultures in males and females, and in all age groups, which was the analysis of Anderson’s work (2010).
I have been playing video games for as long as I remember. I started by playing the original Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo Entertainment System with my older brother and sister. I’ve stayed up way past my bedtime in elementary school playing Pokemon on my Gameboy. I continue to play video games even today, from the Wii to the Xbox and even on my computer. Every study has had mixed results from saying there is no correlation to violence and the other extreme, that videogames are to blame for violence among young teens and children. A study published by Vincent (2014), suggest that there is no correlation between videogames and violence. Video games can adversely impact the children’s brain in terms of observation skills, concentration and paying attention to details etc. Video games just appear to cast a spell on children and give them the visual idea that there are colourful animated figures moving around on the screen. Many parents come to the doctor with complaints that their child is growing obese by the day and not doing any physical activity. Some children, when are asked to go out and play they don’t play on the field instead they go to friends house and start playing video games. It weakens the natural sense of observation.
Video games are not considered as a serious addiction amongst teenagers and adults, often being compared to severe cases of addiction, such as drug abuse or alcohol abuse that may result in the appearance of a decrease in the severity of the addiction. However, video game addiction is a serious matter and has unhealthy consequences for an individual 's life and their health; spending too much time playing video games can take a great toll on one 's physical and mental well-being. Continuing unhealthy patterns of video game activity for prolonged periods of time can result in mental health issues, physical health problems, and a decline in a social life.
