New Orleans like most metropolitan cities has a significant problem with crime. This problem did not just begin with Katrina, since then, the problem seems to have increased tremendously. New Orleans may not lead the nation with the highest murder rates, but the city is definitely in the top 10. Many crimes appear to be drug related although other crimes that contributes to these high rates include rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assault. Being brought up in a poor environment is also a factor that can contribute to an individual living a life of crime. Realizing that not all poor people are criminals, this environment can lead someone to take drastic measures in order to survive. No one wants to live in a place where crime is taking over. …show more content…
Many people have jobs that their salaries do not compare with what it takes to live in the society today. For instance, rent is out of control. A person making minimum wages cannot afford to pay rent on their salary alone. They don’t have money to get an education, so they are not able to get a high paying job. Once again, many people will turn to selling drugs or some other illegal acts to pay for their expenses. This increases crime. The most important way to help reduce crime is to enforce the laws. The government needs to hire and train more police officers and have them visible in the cities, but mainly where there is a lot of known crime. Before Katrina New Orleans was a dying city. Since Katrina it is slowly coming back to life, but unless changes are made to control the violence New Orleans will once again be a dying city. Law enforcement needs to take control of the outrages of violence and fix the city’s dysfunctional criminal justice …show more content…
“The most prominent of his policy changes was the aggressive policing of lower-level crimes, a policy which has been dubbed the "broken windows" approach to law enforcement. In this view, small disorders lead to larger ones and perhaps even to crime. As Mr. Guiliani told the press in 1998, "Obviously murder and graffiti are two vastly different crimes. But they are part of the same continuum, and a climate that tolerates one is more likely to tolerate the other."” (Francis). If all of these factors could be set into place, the city would be on the road to becoming crime
In The Rich Get Richer and the Poor Get Prison by Jeffery Reiman and Paul Leighton, four multifaceted issues are focused on and examined. These issues are the Unites States high crime rates, efforts in explaining the high crime rates, where the high crime rates originally came from, and the success attained at a high price. The initial key issue that Reiman and Leighton discuss is America’s high rising crime rates with the understanding of the people that believe policy and regulations are the causes of the decrease in crime. The many graphs throughout the chapter represent information that undoubtedly illustrates that specific policy and regulation may cause rates to become stagnate or strike a plateau. While the rule makers make it appear as though their organization is functioning. Later guns and gun control policy are discussed. With the stern enforcement of the gun policy, at the time, crime appeared to decline, or become stagnate resulting in a plateau effect that is illustrated in the graphs. Countless arrests were made with large quantities of people being imprisoned. Du...

Crime in New Orleans is treacherously high; it has been the worst year since 2004. The ordeal lies with trying to teach old dogs new tricks instead of doing the unattainable the justice system should focus on children who are still innocent and deserving of a better future. Kids need persistent discipline, but if their parents are sluggish on the matter how are they going to learn right from wrong? P.A.S.T. will help teach kids that the violence is nothing but history. The program will help children in any household setting because the program’s converge doesn’t have much to do with the children’s parents, nor is it optional. Therefore, the parents will not have a choice in the matter of having their children taken out of P.A.S.T. that will be determined solely by the judge, but they can request for their child to be placed into the program. The program is focused on the first crime or things children would normally not receive punitive measures for whether it either be in the household or in public ranging from acts of defiance to misdemeanors, such as stealing small items, getting in fights, or relentless disrespect or abuse towards parents or siblings. Ways to improve the crime rate in New Orleans are to follow the step process of P.A.S.T which is to punish, assess, show sentiment, and thrive.
San Antonio is facing a market failure due to the high presence of area crime associated with the cities police department inefficiency, poverty rate, and inability to sustain its rapidly growing population. San Antonio has started to look into initiatives to increase their police force, work with different agencies and stop crime at the root. However, a lot of these initiatives started after the crime increase or are not at a large enough scale yet to keep up with the market failures of this growing
The solution to this problem would definitely a big relief for New Mexico community because they would have one less thing to worry about especially when people go out alone and it would absolutely make the city shine more on a safe side, than before. It is very shocking to know that there are still some people out there in the world who are tolerating all the violent crime, and still taking no action against them, it is only the state of New Mexico, senators and governors who are willing to do something to decrease the crime rate. We all need to put this agony to an end as soon as possible, if we keep tolerating all these violent crimes to ourselves, this would be one of the biggest crimes we are committing to ourselves. If you want to stop all the toleration by criminals in the state or nationally, you should go vote for tougher three strikes law on www.sos.state.nm.us where you can register for 2016 voting session. Along with voting you can also donate for the New Mexico victims at http://donatelifenm.org/ , and keep continuing the good deeds for your
When a child is growing up he is frequently asked what he is going to do for money when he gets older. The more this question is asked to them, the more they feel like they have to have money to be happy in life. After many tries of trying to make a stable life at a low paying job, a criminal life maybe more appealing to them at they may start living life under the gun. As stated by William Wilson in When Work Disappears, “Neighborhoods plagued by high levels of joblessness are more likely to experience low levels of social organization, they go hand in hand.” In Chicago for instance, in 1990 there was only one in three in the twelve ghetto communities that had held a job in a typical workweek of the year. When there are high rates of joblessness bigger problems surface such as violent crime, gang violence, and drug trafficking. (Wilson P356-362)
To begin with, anybody privy to the events in New Orleans that ensued after Hurricane Katrina struck knows that horrible things that had nothing to do with natural causes happened: there were murders, gunfire directed at a rescue helicopter, assaults and, courtesy of New Orleans’ city police department, a myriad other crimes that most probably went unreported (Katrinacoverage.com).
The population of New Orleans was steadily decreasing, between the years of 2000 and 2005, 30,000 (6%) of the population left New Orleans in search for better lives (4). The declining population shows us that before Hurricane Katrina residence were already considering leaving the city, some push factors leading them away from the city include poverty and unemployment (5). Accord to the U.S 2005 Census Bureau around 23% of the residence lived in poverty, this can be a result of the nearly 12% unemployment rate (5). With an unemployment rate double the national standard and nearly one forth the population living in poverty, the city of New Orleans had many push factors against it resolution in a decline population prier to Hurricane Katrina. At the time of the storm nearly 400,000 residents were displaced from their homes too near by safe areas or other states. The population reming in the city as decreased to a few thousand (6). A month after the disaster when the levee breaches were repaired and the flood water was pumped out of the city, residence were allowed to return to what was left of their homes. The first reliable estimate of the New Orleans population after Hurricane Katrina was an ‘American Community survey’. The survey projected that by the start of 2006 around one third or 158,000 of the population returned. By the middle of f2006 the city
Crime in this country is an everyday thing. Some people believe that crime is unnecessary. That people do it out of ignorance and that it really can be prevented. Honestly, since we live in a country where there is poverty, people living in the streets, or with people barely getting by, there will always be crime. Whether the crime is robbing food, money, or even hurting the people you love, your family. You will soon read about how being a criminal starts or even stops, where it begins, with whom it begins with and why crime seems to be the only way out sometimes for the poor.
Poverty has a direct effect on crime. The two topics can be associated in several ways beginning with the frame of mind individuals

Now, from 1988 to 1998, California was considered the “Decade of death” as over 1000 people would die in Los Angeles per year. And that’s just Los Angeles never mind the entire State of California. Now it has declined from the years of 2008 to 2012 where violence, in general, has dropped by 16 percent. But even with that drop, it seems that California has a big issue in containing gang violence. A place like Compton, California is known for its gang violence and even though they have had a 30 percent drop in gang-related crimes. And the city of Los Angeles gang-related crimes has dropped by 66 percent since 2005. But if you do the math there is still about 500 gang related crimes a year which is too many. In 2002 to help fix the situation former NYC police chief William J. Bratton added 1000 more cops to patrol the city of Los Angeles.
Many communities have been the victim of many gangs moving into their once safe neighborhood, causing major downfalls and preventing the citizens from living their daily lives in peace. Guarino elaborates how Chicago still outpaces other big American cities in crime rates due to gang violence (Guarino1). There’s a lot of given reasons to why there is much gang violence in the city but the solutions are not as prominent. In the article, “Chicago Tactics Put Major Dent in Killing Trend” written by Monica Davey, she goes on to explain, “that more than 500 people were killed in Chicago in one year, many of them young men shot to death amid the hundreds of gangs that flourish in Chicago neighborhoods” (Davey). Davey continues on to say that in recent months, police officers have been working overtime and dispatched to 20 small zones that are considered the most dangerous in Chicago (Davey). Due to the high activity of police activity, Chicago homicides and gang violence have declined.
When the City of Atlanta is mentioned, individuals automatically associate the city with its positive attributes, such as, the beautiful lights, family activities and tourist attractions. The crime that occurs often goes unmentioned; however it is increasingly becoming an issue. Forbes ranked Atlanta as the sixth dangerous city in the US with a violent crime rate of 1,433 per 100,000 residents. The city’s crime rate correlates with its poverty levels and low education rates along with Beccaria’s ideas of punishment being swift, severe and certain.
The change in our society from having rich, middle, and poor economic statuses has caused our society to crumble. The increase of low waged workers has increased tremendously. The decline in wages cause parents to work 2-3 jobs just to make the bills, which in turn has caused parents and children’s relationships to fail, which also in turn cause the children to have behavioral issues, which in turn cause violence rates to increase. Every time you turn on the television, all you observe and hear about is violence in our world. Our society is crumbling out of control due to the low wage jobs and inequality of wages among workers and if not addressed and improved our future will not survive.
