Postman says that if education is to survive, it must have an end. In this essay, we will discuss what these ends are, and how they compare with the “ends” of John Dewey. Dewey believes that it is the very nature of life is to strive to continue being alive, and that education is the most important way to achieve that. Postman says that the learning process should never really ever end. These two educational philosophers, when you examine them, actually have similar theories.
Neil Postman says “To put it simply, there us no surer way to bring an end to education, than for education to have no end”(Postman,4). This is the main idea that Postman bases his whole book on. To actually ever stop learning, is the only way to actually end the process of education. Postman thinks that our youth, the parents, and the teachers all must have a “god” or several “gods” to work for. A “god “ or a purpose is something that we should take very seriously, and should use it to reach our goals. Postman belive that there are these gods for whom we work for, but that in our culture today most of our gods fail. These failed gods or “false gods” are what direct us to the end, according to Postman.
There are four gods in Postman’s theory that are part of these “False” gods that lead us to and end. Technology, economic utility, consumership, and separatism are the four gods which we work to achieve. Postman says that to achieve economic utility, we go to school to establish a secure career so that we will be able to provide for ourselves, and our family. He thinks that in our society, it is morally important to buy things to be happy, which is his god of consumership. Postman believes that people think that they are not as good as someone else unless they have the same material things. Separatism or “Multiculturalism” is the god that postman believes brings to to an finalized end. Postman believes that it is tribalistic thinking and that through emphasis on ethnicity and learning about different cultures we become actually separate. Instead of pointing out the differences between one ethnicity and another, we should just be who were are as a culture.
The first principle Postman suggests is that people should reflect upon any definition before accepting it blindly. Definitions are defined by other people rather than by god. The so called definitions can be biased due to different point of views people have. Therefore, Postman suggests students imagine “alternative definitions for every important concept and term they must deal with in school” (23).
High school is the stepping stone between childhood and the real world. John Dewey spent most of his life striving to improve this transition. He believed high schools were not preparing students for the needs of society by merely teaching the basics, such as reading, writing, and arithmetic. Dewey argued that high schools “must present situations where problems are relevant to the problems of living together, and where observation and information are calculated to develop social insight and interest.” This type of education would create socially-responsible citizens who have the ability to work together and solve societal issues; in turn, America’s democratic society would flourish. With this said, high schools continue to ignore Dewey’s suggestions,
People who work hard for their goals experience true happiness. True happiness is the feeling you get when you try to complete your ultimate aim in life. People in the pursuit of education experience this greatly because they are striving to pass their classes to succeed academically. Anthony writes, “No doubt some of the experience I have in my relationships are part of what is good about them, part of what makes the relationship contribute to my flourishing, to what is good in my life” (Kwame Anthony Appiah 450). The experience, he feels during a relationship is what makes him happy in life not the relationship itself. This is similar to how education experience works because many people enjoy the hard work they put into their academics rather than the grades they receive. Dewey believed that education was a way for someone to complete their goal in life. He states, “If a few words are added upon the topic of education, it is only for the sake of suggesting that the educative process is all one with moral process, since the latter is a continuous passage of experience from worse to better” (John Dewey 401). Dewey is explaining that the experience of education allows people to develop their moral process and happiness. Dewey’s ideas on education combined with Anthony’s views on happiness support the idea that one’s experience in education directly influences their happiness. In short, the pursuit of education is an

The main focus of this classical argument involves the learning that is done in the classroom or lecture hall in the schools of America today. The question arose as to which style of teaching is most effective in sparking the minds of the receivers to make them become transformers of their education? Would the “banking concept” of teaching be more effective, where “the scope of the action allowed to the students extends only as far as receiving, filing, and storing the deposits” (pg. 260). Or would the “problem posing” style of teaching be the most effective, where by “responding to the essence of consciousness—intentionally—rejects communiqués and embodies communications. It epitomizes the special characteristic of consciousness” (pg. 265). In this essay I intend persuade you the audience to take in my experiences and the experience of two other authors, whom I will be showing you later, and take a look from my point of view.

Renewable energy is the definite solution to end human’s heavy dependence upon ancient fossil fuels.

During the course of this essay it is my intention to discuss the differences between Classical Hollywood and post-Classical Hollywood. John Dewey was one of the most influential American philosopher born in Vermont in 1859. He graduated from the University of Vermont and eventually got his Ph.D. and went on to teaching at other universities. In his book Experience and Education he talks about traditional education, the theory of experience, criteria of experience, social control, the nature of freedom, the meaning of purpose, progressive organization, and at the end he raps it up with the means and goals of education. Dewey was a well-known philosopher and his ideas travel all around during the early 20th century. He had two main principles; the principle of continuity and the principle of interaction that led to what he believed was the proper way to educated students.
