Sherlock Holmes did indeed act as if he was dying in order for Dr. Watson to get help from a professional to help to cure the disease. For this to happen, Holmes had to insult Dr. Watson about not being a real medical doctor and ordered him not to get a doctor to help him. Eventually, Dr. Watson coaxed him enough to let him call a doctor. Sherlock Holmes also told Dr. Watson that he wanted to have Culverant Smith be his doctor because he was the the only person in the area who knew about the “Black Formosa Corruption” . Before Smith got to the house, Sherlock told Dr. Watson to conceal himself behind the bed head so he could listen to the conversation.
