Cameron Gibbs Week 23 May 9th 2024 An Unfettered Inclination The Devil Went Down to Georgia is a song written by Charlie Daniels and it was released in 1979. It's a song that displays a myriad of Southern culture and comical irony. Throughout the 20th century, the devil has been thrown around quite comically in many such literary or lyrical writings, and one such important writer is Stephen Vincent Benet. His notable achievements are a 15,000-line poem, John Brown's Body 1928, as well as By the Waters of Babylon 1937 and The Devil and Daniel Webster 1936. Both John Brown’s Body and By the Waters of Babylon are amazing stories, but the most interesting of the three has to be The Devil and Daniel Webster. The Devil and Daniel Webster opens with a description of an unfortunate farmer, whose current circumstances are filled with dread and misery. His crops were failing, his family was ill, and his old horse, who served the farmer for years, began showing sickly signs. Jabez stone was at the end of his rope. Being filled with such disparity, in his weakness, he vowed “I would even sell my soul to the devil for two cents!” Unfortunately, this vow did not fall on deaf ears. The next day around midnight, a darkly dressed man visited Stone's house and with a piece of parchment, his soul-bound contract for seven years of prosperity was signed and sealed. Seven years passed in mere moments, and the devilish man was soon at his doorstep once again. Jabiz pleaded with all who he was for an extension, or reprieve, and so the contract was extended for three more years. Despite his prosperity, Jabez Stone felt more trapped and miserable than he did a decade ago. So he called upon a man renowned across all of the states, Daniel Webster.
