According to Goessl, “children today are engrossed in technology. Everywhere they turn technology is a prominent part of their lives.” (2009, para.1) The content of this essay will give information on the impact of young children aged between 3 and 9 using television and computer games. It will then discuss the benefits of mental stimulation during young children’s developmental stages of using technology. Thirdly it will discuss the health dangers of a young child’s diet when it comes to using technology, and what this can lead to. The essay will then analyse the dangers of the eyesight of young children using the technologies’. It will then proceed to discuss the mental danger by viewing restricted content on television and computer games by young children. Lastly, it will provide recommendations to create a better understanding of which can be done to create television and computer games are more beneficial for a young child.
Technologies such as television and computer games have long been a controversial point in regards to young children’s learning and education. Mental stimulation for children aged three to seven using technology during the brains developmental stage can be used as somewhat of a benefit, as there are now educational television programmes and computer games. Technology can be of benefit for children’s brain health by educational television shows, such as Dora the Explorer and Little Einstein’s. These television shows are recommended for children aged 3 and over. The shows teach children from counting and spelling skills to simple scientific facts. In a world full of technological advances being made every day, it comes without surprise that the children of today’s modern world are being accustomed to the use of technology. These rapid advances in technology come with their advantages and disadvantages as many children become absorbed into extended periods of usage without parental intervention. Technology is a modern privilege that allows the world to communicate and interact on scales never seen before. The use of portable devices, such as cellphones, tablets, and laptops, has caused a change in the way children develop and grow by altering emotional, physical, and psychological development into adulthood. Due to the increased use of electronic devices, parental monitoring should always be used to limit the negative effects that portable devices can inflict.
Childhood obesity is a serious medical problem that affects children. Obesity is a medical term, commonly defined as being extremely overweight, which is only half the case. (www.wikipedia.com) Many parent’s ask if their child is obese, or at risk of becoming overweight, and they ask what to do about it. In today’s society we are overwhelmed with technology. Technology is changing everyday, and will forever be a staple in our lives. The effect that technology has on our children has brought on some concerns and some praises. Children these days have no choice but to some how be influenced by the ever growing technology in our societies. Our common concern has been that although digital technology has boosted children’s talent for multitasking, their ability to process information deeply may be deteriorating (Carpenter, 2010). Many people have a wide range of opinions on if technology is having a positive influence on our children or a negative, there is a vast amount of evidence to support both of these arguments. Technology can refer to so many things, but there are three main parts of technology that are having the greatest effects on our children: video games, television/media, and computers. The modern technologies we have today are so powerful because they attract our genetic biases, that the human brain has a tremendous love for visually presented information. Video games, television, movies and computer programs are all very visually oriented and therefore they attract and keep the attention of children easily.

In our present society, people cannot deny that the changes in this world have been tied to the advancement of the technology. It has evolved with this society so deeply where such conveniences are no longer luxuries but rather necessities. Unfortunately, the most affected group of people from the developed technology is the younger age people (Subrahmanyam, 2000). In the past, children were more lively and active: playing outdoors, running around, climbing trees and remaining active rather than watching television and playing video game and computer. It is true that the use of the technology has its own virtue. It provides value, convenience and entertainment, but it should not take the place of movement and realistic play from the children. Obviously, modern technology such as television, digital game, cell phone, and computer should be considered as a major fact, which contributing to negative health problems in children.
Nowadays, children and adolescents spent a considerable part of their time on the internet. Media has turned out to be a very useful tool in many fields such as education, arts, science, sports, and culture. Over the recent decades, there has been a surge in the use of media by the younger generations and concern has been raised about the effect of media on children because of research reports of long term negative effects. Media use is a double edged weapon with both advantages and disadvantages. Since Internet is the easiest way now for children to use so as to watch and observe anything they want such as movies, games, news and pictures, also this useful tool is used by children for harming themselves
Childhood overexposure to television can cause a detrimental effect on reading skills and behavior. Bar-on (2000) states, “The exposure of American children and adolescents to television continues to exceed the time they spend in the classroom: 15,000 hours versus 12,000 hours by the time they graduate.” (p. 289) Children are more vulnerable than adults, to the influences of the behaviors that they view. The pediatrics association estimates that for every hour a child under two spends in front of a screen, he or she spends about fifty minutes less interacting with a parent, and about ten percent less time in creative play. (Carey, 2011, p. 2) Although there have been some studies that found some prosocial and educational benefits, significant research has shown there are a lot more negative effects. (Bar-on, 2000, p. 289) This paper will describe in detail the effects that can be caused from too much television.
