For my final project, I am proposing a critical project that questions the inability for like minded individuals who share common mental disabilities to communicate and understand with those who are the opposite. The outside correlation stems the question of “how does the inability to communicate, within the community of mental diverse individuals towards those without disabilities, cause a major complication that is supported within this novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. This question stemmed from the faults that the main character, Christopher, has throughout the novel. Christopher has Asperger’s syndrome which is a form of autism that causes him to express himself in a straightforward way while making it difficult
for him to understand others that are not as straightforward as he is. For example, he is not able to comprehend gestures that have certain meaning to them that would be used to express an emotion. He also is not able to grasp literary devices like metaphors. Because of this, I became curious as to how similar people in the real world deal with the struggle of being unable to communicate with others at times. In order to complete my critical analysis, I have decided to use sources from Autism written by Jerri Freedman, Teaching Social Communication to Children with Autism written by Brooke Ingersoll, The Handbook of Communication written by Owen Hargie, and Creating Mental Illness written by Allan V. Horwitz. With these sources, I hope to further be able to understand mental illness and the relationship it has with communication.

Intended for his niece, this book has opened the minds for not only me and my peers, but for students around the state. After reading Caught between the Dog and the Fireplug, or How to Survive Public Service, Kenneth Ashworth makes a truthful point of knowing what the differences of personal responsibility and social responsibility is as a bureaucrat. Ashworth shows that social and personal responsibility can be two of the same if the morals of the person acting upon them are in good conscious.
“The Short Bus: A Journey Beyond Normal” by Jonathan Mooney is the story of his journey around the U.S. in short bus nonetheless to meet with different children and their families who have faced challenges in school due to ADD, ADHD, Autism, and other learning disabilities. Jonathan Mooney himself faced the disability of Dyslexia and often had to deal with many challenges in school himself, but he appears to be one of the more fortunate ones, who was able to grow from his disability and ultimately get a degree in English. Needless to say, his book and journey lead the reader to question what really is “normal”, and how the views of this have caused the odds to be stacked against those who don’t fit the mold. Throughout, this story, for me personally however, this story gave several events that I found moving, and had the potential to influence my further work in education.
The book “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” talks about a curious boy with autism whose name is Christopher John Francis Boone. Christopher tries to solve a case of Mrs. Shears,his neighbor, dogs skeptical death. Christopher lives only with his father. His father tells him that his mother died in the hospital, but she really didn't die. She is still alive and is living with Mrs. Shears ex-husband. The reason why Christopher’s mother isn’t living with him anymore is because she cheated on her husband with Mr. Shears. Christopher starts to slowly understand what was happening then he goes out trying to find his mom in London.
In the novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time by Mark Haddon the main character Christopher Boone is faced with a very uncommon battle in life. Christopher has autism. This disability causes him to be an outcast in society and struggle to communicate. Throughout the novel Christopher grows and develops as an individual, as he searches for not only Wellington’s killer, but himself. This novel is strong proof that the society is more important than individuality, because it is evident that society will never change, a person must only find their place, just as Christopher searches for his throughout the book.

Unfortunately, that was his focus until he finds Wellington dead on Mrs. Shears’ lawn. Christopher wants to know who killed Wellington and why. He investigates and finds out not only who killed Wellington, but he discovers secrets about his mother and father. In the book “The Curious Incident of the dog in the night-time”, the author, Mark Haddon, shows us how courageous Christopher is throughout his journey. According to Aristotle, a man is courageous when he sets himself free from his fears, pain, and poverty instead of running away from it. According to Aristotle’s theory, Christopher profusely shows courage when he investigates Wellington’s murder and travels to London to find his mom.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time is told through the eyes of a fifteen year old boy named Christopher Boone. Christopher has a highly-functioning form of autism which allows him to understand complex mathematical problems, but also leaves him unable to comprehend many simple human emotions. His inability to understand metaphors, distinguish emotions, and his lack of imagination makes it possible to consider Christopher as functioning like a computer rather than functioning as a human being. Throughout the story, Christopher is faced with many challenges which he conquers using the stable and never changing system of mathematics. All of these factors suggest that Christopher does, in fact, function like a computer, but it is apparent early in the story that Christopher, regardless of anything else, is capable of independent thought which separates him from the programmed, dependent world of computers.
Holocaust had a big impact on people’s lives because of the indifference and injustice of the people. The story “Night” by Elie Wiesel, The movie “The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas”, and the article “Secret life” are the sources that tell us how bad the holocaust was and how we should stand up when we see people suffering rather than staying aside and be an observer. Being indifferent and an observer encourages the tormentor, which is the opposite of what we should want. By speaking out and acting against injustice we can change what’s going on in other people’s lives that is unfair, and we may save them from their horrible situation. Some people focus on their own needs because they want to save their life and don’t put themselves in danger of other people’s lives, but by being silent and inaction in the face of injustice they will not help other people’s lives and they won’t change what is going on around them that makes them feel bad. The people who are indifferent will not be happy with the outcome of being an observer. If we speak out and act against injustice we can make other people happy and help them to relieve from their situation. If we are speak out we might lose our life, but everybody around us will always remember that we died for other people and we weren’t selfish about our lives. This essay is going to support my opinion of how people should stand up for themselves and other people and how we should act against injustice by giving details from the three sources.
