First Person Narration in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night

The curious incident of the dog in the night time was narrated in first person by Christopher Boone however If it was narrated in third person the audience would not have understood the way Christopher was feeling. Communication, Social Interactions, Relationship’s and Christopher’s Autism spectrum disorder were some of the main areas expressed in the novel.

Christopher’s communications was quite precise, which let the reader understand the text in more depth which made it easier, yet if the book were written in third person the reader would not have understood the social interactions projected. A piece of communication that was in depth was when Christopher got taken to jail. Christopher then listed what he had in his pockets (For Example)

Seven things got confiscated at the police station out of my pocket, which include.

A Swiss army knife with 13 attachments’ including a wire-stripper and a saw and a toothpick and tweezers.
A piece of string.
A piece of a wooden puzzle.
3 pellets of rat food for toby, my rat.
1.47 pounds.
A red paper clip.
A key for the front door.

Yet if this was written in the third person the narrator would not exclaim what contents is in the pocket of a character, although they would say “ 7 things were confiscated out of Christopher’s pockets as he made his way into prison.

Many social interactions where shown within the book, yet the most interesting interaction was Christopher and his Father; they both had a great relationship. One of which was when Father bailed Christopher out of jail. The police interviewed Christopher one question said was, “Was it an accident that you hit a police officer?” Christopher then replied with no it wasn’t, I meant to do it. He was let...

Having this written in the first person allows the audience to have a more understanding. It also makes the reader feel like they are in the book. Although if this book were to be written in the third person the text would carry on forever and you also would not understand to its full potential.

Having Christopher narrating the book in first person is important because it is easier for the reader to understand his written account of the murder of Mr. and Mrs. Sheers dog (Wellington); A step by step investigation is projected and shown to the reader when narrated in first person.

If the book were to be narrated in third person the reader wouldn’t understand how Christopher feels about certain situations. This is also an affect given in the book because the author wants to project Christopher’s autism spectrum disorder condition to the reader.
