Tragedy was near as I was strolling down the dirt road heading to my beautiful house in the North American colonies. I lived with my daughter-in-law, Merry, and with my grandchildren in a big wooden house built by my husband. It was a wonderful day that was filled with surprises and I was ready to take my slumber. As I slept comfortably, I was interrupted and woke up to the screams of “fire”. So I quickly got up and ran to see what all the commotion was about. Little did I know, my grandchildren had tripped over the rug and tipped over the kerosene candle. Once I reached the kitchen, the flames had already consumed it,yet I had the courage to help my grandchildren. I ran up stairs to find Merry. “Please, Anne, save my children!” Merry said as she gasped for air. “ I’m sorry Merry, …show more content…
“Because the kitchen is on fire and there’s no safe route to reach them,” I said as it became hard to breathe. I then grabbed Merry’s rough skin and pulled her to safety. I ran back and grabbed as many supplies as possible. As I ran towards Merry, I heard a loud sound coming from the living room. BOOOM! A huge part of the ceiling collapsed and pierced Merry’s stomach. “ANNE!!! I need you to get out of here NOW!!,” Merry yelled at the top of her lungs. “I can help you out of this,” I cried as i tried to lift the wooden support off of Merry. “PLEASE GOD, DON’T LEAVE ME HELPLESS AT THIS TIME!!” I roared trying to help Merry, but it was too late. She was gone. I realized that if I stayed any longer, I would die too. So I ran as fast as I could towards my front yard. Once I was at a safe distance from the fire, I turned around to see the house. The sight of burning wood lingered in the air and the dark smoke covered the moon light. Once I turned back around, the house was beyond saving and it was better to just accept the fact that the house was gone along with my possessions. As the night got colder and darker, I had no other choice but to sleep outside.
The focus of Miller’s The Crucible is an appalling witch trial that morfs the once-peaceful town of Salem into a cutthroat slaughterhouse. As a lucrative playwright and a not-so-subtle allegory author, Miller is a seasoned wordsmith who addresses people akin to himself, and is not secretive about that information. The Crucible best serves its purpose as a learning device and a social statement, especially at the time of its publishing. Miller‘s piece showcases the appeals in an easy-to-identify manner that is perfect for middle or high school students who are new to the appeals, or for English majors who have no problem pinpointing them, making this play ideal for a classroom setting.
The Crucible was a rather strong book, it had battles both internal and external, there were also betrayals and vendettas… but a few stuck strong to their morals of what was wrong, and what was right. After the girl’s acts were, undoubtedly, in the eyes of the law, seen as entirely real, people who would not otherwise have been accused of witchcraft were now eligible to be under Satan’s spell. One John Proctor, saw himself above the nonsense, that witches could not exist in Salem, his wife, his children nor him; But, when Mary Warren said to the court that he used his spirit to drag her into court to testify against the girls, the judges deemed her word more truthful than his. After actively and repeatedly denying the claims, he was sentenced to death, for only a witch could lie in the face of god.
The play I chose for my third play reading report is "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller.
Arthur Miller’s political allegory of McCarthyism, in the form of The Crucible, has been adapted into a faithful companion to the play that is able to incorporate the emotions and atmosphere that may not have been available to some in the play. Miller’s screenplay is very faithful to the book, having many of the same lines and situations the character in the play experience. Because of this, we are able to make an active connection to the play, thus expanding our understanding of the play. Lead by Daniel Day-Lewis, The Crucible’s plot is portrayed by a solid cast, who, for the most part, are able to engross the viewer into the story. The film contains many captivating scenes that exemplify hysteria meant to be depicted in the play, that demands the viewers attention while also immersing them in emotions. The film adaptation of The Crucible is a well produced version of the play that not only serves as a companion to the play, but an entertaining and though provoking experience.
The Crucible – Characters and Changes & nbsp; Change is good for the future. " We hear the catchy phrase everywhere. From company slogans to motivational speeches, our world seems to impose this idea that change is always a good thing. Assuming that the change is for the better, it is probably a true statement in most cases. The root of this idea seems to come from the notion that we are dissatisfied with the state that we are in, so, in order to create a more enjoyable environment, we adjust.
Great events, whether they are beneficial or tragic ones, bring change in a person. These scenarios can give one an entirely new perspective on life, and turn around his way of thinking. Events such as the Salem Witch Trials show the people involved what they could not see before. In Arthur Miller's The Crucible, Elizabeth Proctor, Reverend Hale, and John Proctor gain valuable insight into themselves, as well as others.
The play The Crucible by Arthur Miller focuses on the frenzy that occurred in the Massachusetts town of Salem in the year 1692. It shows the interactions between the characters and how their varying personalities affected the dynamics of the trials. One of these characters is Giles Corey, an eighty-three year old farmer who is the scapegoat for many of the bad occurrences in the town. The primary reason for this is that he is uneducated and had a fiery personality which led to many confrontations with others. Although Giles Corey’s personality antagonized him with the townsfolk, this same stubbornness is what makes Giles one of the heroes of The Crucible.
In the play The Crucible, characters are presented in many ways. The ways Miller presents the character of Parris is through what the characters say, stage directions, what the character of Parris says and does and the relationships that Parris has with other characters in the play.
"'A person is either with this court or he must be counted against it, there be no road between.'" Act 3, Scene 1 pg. 87 . The characters in the play are either portrayed as good or evil with no in between , which makes life even harder for them . Salem mislabeled people in town as good or evil , but they had very little or no evidence at all to support it . Salem labels Rebecca nurse as a witch and evil , when really she was innocent and took care of everyone's babies. Abigail was an evil character who was a liar, vindictive and careless , the people of Salem viewed her as good character .
In conclusion, the acting in the production was very good. I was held captivated by the accents and shocked by the language and dialect because I knew that this really happens and has happened. I felt like I could actually change what was happening on stage. For Instance, when the rumble is happening and Bernardo and Riff bring out the switchblades, I gasped. Silently to myself, I said "DON'T DO THIS. THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A CLEAN FAIR FIGHT. YOU GUYS ARE MORE SIMILAR THAN YOU ARE DIFFERENT, JUST BEING FRIENDS." The same occurrence happened when Anita is assaulted by the Jets when attempting to find Tony to save him. I understood her feelings and wanted the Jets to get in trouble for their actions. I became invested in what happened to the
“Well, all the plays that I was trying to write were plays that would grab an audience by the throat and not release them, rather than presenting an emotion which you could observe and walk away from.” by Arthur Miller. All great works provide a way to reach in and grab the audience through the reoccurring themes like, greed, jealousy, reputation and hypocrisy. Arthur Miller had one of those great works and it was called “The Crucible”. The play was based off of the witch trials that happened in Salem in the year of 1962. Some of the characters were actual characters involved in the witch trials. Arthur Miller wrote this play during the time of the “Red Scare”. Miller wrote The Crucible because he wanted to turn the The Salem Witch Trials into
In chapter seven titled as “Incident at the Window”, Utterson and Enfield were walking down the street when they saw the alley of the door of the first chapter. They went to see the three windows of Jekyll's office. The one in the middle was open, and anyone could see the doctor's face. They stayed to talk when suddenly, Jekyll, became pale, he looked horrified and ran out, closing the window. The two men were paralyzed as Utterson speaks softly, "God forgive us, God forgive us."
The roar and crackling was getting louder, The cinders and embers began falling on us, stinging and smarting like ants. Suddenly, in the red glow and the haze, I remembered wondering what it was like in a burning ember, and I thought: Now I know, it's a red hell. Why aren't I scared? We pushed open the door to the back room and found four or five little kids, about eight years old or younger, huddled in a corner, although pieces of the old roof were crashing down too close for comfort. I snatched up another kid,and dropped him without waiting to see if he landed okay or not.
For my historical movie review, I decided to do “The Crucible.” A crucible is a place or occasion of severe test or trial. It is in times like that of a crucible that the worse tends to come out of people. That is what happened not only during the Salem Witch Trials, of which the movie is set in the time in but also during the time of the Red Scare. The author of the original play, Author Miller, saw this connection and wrote the play.
The autumn breeze rushed through the crowd of people, leaves from a nearby tree blew off and into the distance. The body swayed in the wind from its rope. Another citizen had been accused of witchcraft and hung. The face of the dead body was swollen with a permanent look of fear on its face. I watched the executioner cut down the body into a waiting cart.
