For my historical movie review, I decided to do “The Crucible.” A crucible is a place or occasion of severe test or trial. It is in times like that of a crucible that the worse tends to come out of people. That is what happened not only during the Salem Witch Trials, of which the movie is set in the time in but also during the time of the Red Scare. The author of the original play, Author Miller, saw this connection and wrote the play. Before I go into depth on the subject itself, let’s understand the history behind it. The Salem Witch Trials started after girls started to cry out strangely. Salem was a Puritan society at the time, so its governing system was largely based on their religion. America took advantage of this and started exporting its goods to other countries. Likewise, the Soviet Union started to move as well into the same countries. Government officials saw this as a threat but did not attack directly and the Cold war had begun. In effect of this, the American government saw that not only were the Soviets a threat but the idea of communism as well. This caused the chain of events dubbed the “Red Scare”. On the American side of the events, there was McCarthyism. During this event, many people were interrogated for being suspected of supporting the “Communist Party”. Just like the Salem Witch Trials, the only proof that was given to support this claim of being a part of the party was someone else’s word. The people how were interrogated were then blacklisted. This all was caused because the American government stereotyped the government so much that it warped almost everyone’s opinion about what living under Communism would be like.
