Live Play Review: The Crucible by Arthur Miller
The play, as directed by Ivo van Hove, Played live on the Thursday night of 24 March 2016 at the Walter Kerr Theater. The play starred Ben Whislaw, Saoirse Ronan, Cianan Hinds, and Shophie Okonedo who are acclaimed international live drama role players. The four acts played in two hours carries the theme of witchcraft is a society that is intolerance to black magic and tries them in a biased way possible to meet their desire to get rid of them all. Therefore, defending a woman suspected of practicing witchcraft comes with a sacrifice that one farmer named John Proctor has to bear in trying to save own wife from death penalty on similar accusations. Overall, the director applied acting and the characters appropriately to reinforce the theme, attitude, and mood of the play more than a drama film. …show more content…

For instance, the personality of Ben Whislaw matched its assigned character of John Proctor thereby enhancing the theme of witchcraft and the mood of fear among the audience. The mannerisms and talking of Ben Whislaw particularly showed the innocence of his wife accused of practicing witchcraft. Therefore, from the dressing to the assumption of the roles they represent, the major actors and actresses showed that they have not only the mastery of the plot but also the unique ability to captivate the audience through intense drama. Personally, the choice of actors and actresses appeared as one major strength of the director since trough them the interesting nature of the drama emerged. Indeed, acting by the actors and actresses enhanced the play’s theme and the audience’s mood
