The characters in this story face many tests that require them to have courage to overcome these tests and move forward toward their overall goal. Bilbo wasn’t really an adventurous person but as the dwarves and Bilbo progressed in their journey, Bilbo’s moms genes started to kick in and became more wary, adventurous and brave. Later in the journey, the dwarves started to rely on Bilbo too much, which created Bilbo to do mostly everything. Although Bilbo had to do mostly everything, he achieved more courage and didn’t really doubt himself that often. Bilbo shows the most courage out of all 14 members of the group. When he was instructed to go and spy on the trolls, when Bilbo had to battle the evil spiders, but the event that shows the most courage is when Bilbo was in the mountain meeting Smaug face to face by himself.

The first point is when Bilbo gets instructed to go and spy on the trolls. So this is the first official test since they left off from their journey. Bilbo and the others see this light so they go closer to it wondering what it is. They get to a point where they can’t go any closer, so they send Bilbo to go and scout the area. ‘“You must go on and find out all about that light, and what it is for, and if all is perfectly safe and canny.”’(pg.40-41) Bilbo finds some trolls near the fire talking, and stays there for a long time unnoticed. Then Bilbo tries to pick William’s pocket but fails and gets to a fight. The dwarves get wary and follow Bilbo’s trail, but they go right to the fire where the trolls are. Now the trolls and the Dwarves have a fight and Bilbo quickly hides in the bush. The dwarves get captured and then Gandalf comes and saves them. Bilbo showed his courage by spying on the trolls and he does this ...

...ge spiders all by himself which took a lot of courage to do because it was about 6 spiders verses Bilbo, but in the end Bilbo and the dwarves were able to escape form the spiders. The third paragraph is where Bilbo shows the most courage in the book and that’s where Bilbo faces the dragon. This is not easy thing to do when you know that the creature is 20 times bigger than you and can kill you instantly, but Bilbo still went on. The first time in the cave he was able to steal a golden cup. The second time was not so good he almost ended up dying if it wasn’t for the riddles and the quick escape form the flames. Eventually Smaug was killed and everything went almost back to normal.
