The cities of London and New York City have many things in common. They are both big cities and provide many opportunities for many things. Although the city of New York is heavily populated, one can find entertainment within a couple hours; However if one wants more history and cheaper living, while being in a bigger city, London would be a better choice.
While New York City and London are both big, London is the bigger of the cities. London also has more people. However there are many more reasons of difference between these two cities.
The cost of living in New York City is very high. It costs about $7300 to keep a standard life and have some luxuries in New York. It is one of the most expensive cities to live in the world.Price per Square Feet to Buy Apartment in City Centre is about $1107. (Numbeo). According to the Huffington Post, in 2012, “In New York, the minimum wage is $7.25, far below the $11.86 an hour it takes to actually live in the city, according to the Living Wage Project.” (Huffington Post). In 2015, the median asking rent in the city accounted to 58.4 percent of the median income. This is awfully expensive considering that “reports indicate that the median resale value for homes in Manhattan has reached

$982,437, and $539,300 in Brooklyn.”(Curbed New York). The quality of living in New York City is high. It has a moderate amount of safety in New York City. The health care provided in the city is rather good. The climate is really good within the city. However the crime rate is about 47.6 % and the traffic commute time is moderate. (Numbeo). On average travel time to work by borough in 2014 come to about 40 minutes. (NYCEDC). In 2015, the New York Post stated that, “the quality of life has gotten worse in just the past few years, according to 49 percent of respondents. Just 19 percent said it’s gotten better and 32 percent believe it’s the same.” (NY Post). Noise is also a huge issue, disturbing the quality of life in New York City. In some parts of the city the noise can get to 85 decibels, which can permanently damage the ears if endured for a long period of time. In higher levels of the apartment buildings, the noise can get up to 100 decibels, especially when the planes swoop only a few hundred feet above the rooftops of the building. (USA Today). The amount of activities in New York city are large but fairly close together. There are so many things to do in New York City, especially when everything is within a couple of hours of each other. There is Central Park and Grand Central Station. There is also the building the rise above all the others, the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building. And one can’t forget Ellis Island or the Statue of Liberty. These are only a few of the things to do within the five boroughs. There is of course the Bronx Zoo and the New York Aquarium in Brooklyn. (Trip Advisor). The opportunities for work are good. There are plenty of jobs in New York City. The private sector jobs in New York City rose over the year by 1.5.percent, to 3,812,700 in March 2017. Losses were centered in trade, transportation and utilities and manufacturing. The city’s over-the-year private sector growth rate was up by 1.5% and was above the comparable rate for the state, up by 1.4%, but below that of the nation- upwards of 1.7%. The city's working-age population, 16 years and older, who were employed was 58.3% in March 2017. (NYS Department of Labor). Unemployment this year so far, has been much lower than it was at anytime last year. (Bureau of Labour Statistics). London has many differences in contrast to the grand city of New York.
The cost of living in London is very high, however less than so living in New York City. It costs only about £4,495 (about $5816) to live in london with the same standard life and luxuries as in New York City. It is the second highest city to live in in the world. The price per square feet to buy an apartment in city centre is about £1325 ($1714). (Numbeo). Terry Smith, chief executive of broker Tullett Prebon said, “The UK economy is an utter disaster on any number of fronts.” The new rate that comes into force in the UK jumps to the top of the list with the most onerous tax burden for any worker earning £500,000 or more. (Daily
Mail). The quality of living in London is high. It has a moderate amount of crime, similar to other thriving cities. The health care system is good. The climate stays at a good average. The crime rate is 46.2%. This happens to be less than New York City. The travel commute time is high as to be expected in a city as such. (Numbeo). London is packed with endless opportunities. Tt happens to be one of the world's most inviting cities for new people fresh off campus, as well as home to world-class schools, universities and museums. London has a very vibrant multicultural environment. London also offers a huge variety of cuisines and recreational opportunities that appeal to many different interests. (Teleport Cities). London is one of the greenest capital cities on the planet. Harley Street in London is renowned for offering the best medical doctors in the world. Within the all of the United Kingdom, and specifically in London, England, there are no major factions that dramatically threaten the stability of the city. (Moving to London). The amount of activities in London are large but rather close together. For instance, there is the famous British Museum. There is also the Tower of London, Stonehenge, Shakespeare's globe theatre. If some people were to prefer a more war like setting, there is Churchill's war rooms. (TripAdvisor). If people want a more contemporary feel, there is The Shard, a skyscraper in London that rises up to one thousand sixteen feet in the air, with an observation deck at eight hundred two feet, on the seventy second floor. Or if one were to prefer music, they could attend The Proms in the Prince Albert music hall. (Mr. Harper’s Notebook). The opportunities for work are varied and often very good. In 2016, the employment rate was at an all time high, since records started in 1971, at 74.2%, with 31.58 million people working. Average wages went up by 2.1% during 2015 to 2016. (Gov.Uk). Whilst employment is fiercely competitive in London, there are a rather large amount of job openings all the time. Unemployment levels all over Britain have been decreasing steadily over the last few years. Opportunity is high in London, with some of the best minds in the world. (Moving to London).
“How can a middle-class family afford a rent of $2,000 or even $2,800 when the family consists of four children and a single working parent. when food needs to be on the table every night and bills need to be paid. I find this ridiculous, no one ever wanted to live in Bushwick and now all of a sudden these people want to live here.” -
In chapter one of "Nickel and Dimed", Barbara stated that she is renting a room for $500 and having a waitress job which is paying her $2.43 plus tips "from 2:00 till 10:00p.m". After a month, she would get $311.04 without tips and tax. Assume Barbara get $20 tips every day, she would get $711.04 without tax per month. After paying off the rent, she would left with about only $150. This is not enough for food and gas for a month. Which is why Barbara had to get another job where she works at Jerry 's. Meanwhile in the current time, according to an article by Kwelia, it says that "The cost of Bay Area living continues to be a hot topic of discussion in the region. The average asking price for a one-bedroom in San Francisco is now $2,673 a month, up more than 10 percent from last year." Imagine working as a minimum wage worker full time, getting paid 9 dollars per hour for 8 hours a day. The person would earn $1440 without tax. It is almost half of the rent fee. The person is then forced to have two jobs, the only other option is to live with another person to share the renting fee. As a result a person who is unable to get two jobs working at the minimum wage or finding a roommate would likely to be homeless. The person is then forced to move out from the city to find a cheaper place to
Downtown London had the highest vacancy rate in the city space was being rented for prices between fifty cents and two dollars per meter which was lower than the average in London.
With a population of over 160,000, the city of Syracuse is a reasonably priced place to live. In 1999, the median price of homes in the city of Syracuse was $85,000. The real estate value in goes up as you get to the outskirts of town, like the newest area of Wincourse. This area was developed in the 1970's.
Vancouver is not affordable to live for the young professionals due to gentrification problems. The economy requires gentrification to develop the city. In order for a city to flow better, more people have to spend and sell. Furthermore, for people to spend or sell more, it requires more people to live. However, gentrification is pushing people away from their homes, and makes it difficult for the young professionals to move in.
As stated by Richard F. Burns and Thomas G. Vaccaro in Unaffordable Housing: A Root Cause of Social Inequality, 80% to 120% of area median income—also struggle to find affordable rental units in all 50 states. This lack of “workforce housing” results in their inability to live in or near the places where they work. Not being able to live near work if results in higher cost of living because you end up having to pay for either a car or, you could rely on public transportation or even have to pay forward gas money to another person. Housing also ties(“is also tied to”) to cost of living which turns out is very expensive. According to DePersio, Greg in "How Much Money Do You Need to Live in Los Angeles?, As of August 2015, the average rent in Los Angeles is $2,296 per month. Even if someone is only looking for a one-bedroom apartment, the average cost sits at approximately$1,950 per month. A two-bedroom apartment averages slightly over $2,500. So as one can see that they have to make at the very least $13 an hour just to pay rent, this does not even include food or utilities let alone if they have kids forget it. Because of unaffordable housing has left millions without homes making them fall under the category of
According to a recent New York Times article, there are people in New York with multiple jobs that still cannot afford to pay the rent on a apartment in the city. Therefore, many remain homeless and must find relief in one of the city’s shelters. (nytimes.com) The New York Times states that, “Advocates of affordable housing say that the employed homeless are proof of the widening gap between wages and rents — which rose in the city even during the latest recession — and, given the shortage of subsidized housing, of just how difficult it is to escape the shelter system, even for people with jobs….the jobs aren’t enough to get people out of homelessness” (nytimes.com). What we see modeled in New York City is a disturbing ...
As the United States economy grows and technology advances, many areas such as San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and New York City embrace tech companies with open arms. However, it turns San Francisco, once an affordable place, into a luxurious and costly city for people who earn six digit pay checks. The Golden Gate City currently tops the chart for the most expensive homes in the nation. Even techies rent are increasing each month. The people moving into these cities are raising rental and property prices. The middle class is being squeezed out of their
A large part of the change within a community is restaurants and grocery stores. With the influx of wealth coming into gentrified communities, the dining options within the area must match with the new demographic. Affordable grocery stores and restaurants are being bought out and displaced with new and expensive eating options. While this may be seen as a positive for people looking to buy or rent apartment in these areas, it is certainly a negative for someone who relies on these stores on a daily basis. Displacement isn’t confined to a physical location; culture can be displaced as well. The replacement of stores that citizens rely on for convenience is a part of gentrification as well. A notable example of gentrification outside of housing is Whole Foods. Whole Foods caters to the everyday lifestyle of the new demographic while upholding ludicrous prices for anyone on a budget. An article in The Real Deal New York States it best, “Kale could be a rent killer for long-term residents of Central Harlem.” This location in Central Harlem not only has ridiculous prices within the store, but the value of the apartments surrounding it have increased as well. This causes even more of a n increase in rent prices and pushes even more long-term citizens out of housing. Housing within a one-mile radius of the new Whole Foods in Harlem have a difference of four point seven percent in rent
However, it is less expensive when compared to other major cities in the US such as New York, San Francisco/Silicon Valley. Chicago is a big city of 2.5 million people. Therefore, average rent for the city isn't a useful metric in this context. A better metric is median rent by neighborhood (there are 77 community areas in Chicago). Different neighborhoods have different median rents and our AmeriCorps members live all over city. Visit this site for a breakdown by neighborhood. Given rent is likely to be your largest recurring expense, you'd have to talk to one of our current AmeriCorps members about living in Chicago on the stipend (I can arrange this if you
Gentrification is a highly important topic that has not only been occurring all over the United States, but especially closer than we may have thought. San Francisco is home to hundreds of thousands of people who have been a part of how amazing this city has become. San Francisco is one of the most visited places in the world with many of its famous landmarks, endless opportunities not only for daytime fun but also has an amazing nightlife that people cannot get enough of. People come for a great time and could not be done without the help of the people who have grown up to experience and love this city for what it truly is. The cost of living in such an important city has definitely had its affect of lower income San Francisco residents. For decades we have seen changes occurring in parts of San Francisco where minorities live. We have seen this in Chinatown, SOMA, Fillmore district, and especially the Mission district.
To conclude, New York City is one of the most densely inhabited metropolitan collection of cultural diversity in the world in which structures our temperament. New York City applies an imperative influence upon trade, economics, mass communication, skill, style, and education. Frequently it is known that New York City is a crucial core for global politics and has been depicted as the ethnic headquarters of the globe. New York City has been known as a melting pot of culture and as this prolong throughout towards the current day, the city has become ornate with distinct cultures. You can easily experience many aspects of different cultures by going to the different ethnic neighborhoods that exist throughout the city.
I am fortunate at the this time to not have to be concerned with government policies and politics that create barriers to affordable housing, especially rental housing. The most significant issue with rental housing, however, is the rising costs of rent (Schwartz, 2010). For many populations, the cost of renting a housing takes up a significant amount of their annual income, making saving and monetary flexibility near impossible. In some instances, this expense accounts for up to 30% of income (Downs, 2008). It is also significant that one of the populations that most generally ut...
One major issue affecting many people trying to make the decision on where to live is their quality of life in either extreme. Health, education, transportation are three major concerns that many consider. In a city, pollution surrounds you wherever you step whether on the streets of a busy financial district or on the lawn of a large park. Pollution could possibly cause health problems later in life. In the country, pollution is scarce. Fresh air, rolling green hills, a few pieces of litter here and there but pretty much everything is clean, and wow! No smog, you can see the stars! In the country, childhood education, kindergarten through twelfth grade, is significantly better than in a large city; smaller class sizes and larger budgets create excellent learning environments. In cities, public schools are often plagued with very large classes packed into small spaces. Teachers with low pay, and little or no dedication are thrown into classrooms to teach, resulting in poor education. Transportation is very accessible in city environments. Public transportation, by way of subways, busses and ferries, are cheap and easy ways of getting around a metropolis, whether going out to work, school, or for a night on the town. In the country, everyone needs to have access to his or her own vehicle. A commute to work or school is about an average of forty-five minutes!
Out in the country people do not have to catch a bus, subway, or taxi to get from point A to point B all the time. In the country people can own their own car because there is room to park it at their house. In the city everyone has to catch a bus or taxi to get somewhere unless they walk. The country has plenty of roads to get people where they need to go. In the city even if someone does own a car they have to pay to park everywhere they go. The country offers free parking and most of the time parking on the side of the road is an option
