Young love is something so complicated, sometimes it may even lead to consequences such as death. We can see this in the play Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare. The play follows the story of 14 year old Juliet, and 19 year old Romeo. Romeo’s family(the Montagues) and Juliet’s family(the Capulets) are enemies, forcing the young couple to be together in secret. As these star cross’d lovers fall into a deep romance, we learn lessons about new love, and the tragedies to come from their love for each other. William Shakespeare uses his characters Romeo and Juliet, to express the theme of love by telling their story of young love, and how love can lead to poor decisions.
Throughout the play, Romeo and Juliet express what young love is like. One of the first things to notice about these characters quick found romance is that they want to be together all the time. At the point in time the play takes place(1500s), finding a companion for life at the young age of 14, was normal for a girl similar to Juliet. We can see throughout the play, these characters lying and hiding the truth from others. Soon, Juliet fakes her own death. This is an attempt at making her family believe that she is really gone, and soon she will run to Romeo to be together with him. However, words get lost in translation and Romeo is under the impression that Juliet is actually dead. This causes Romeo so much pain that he kills himself. Once Juliet wakes and sees him dead, she kills herself for real. At the death of both Romeo and Juliet, the Montagues and the Capulets realize how their fighting has caused too much pain. This twisted reality teaches us how love can make people crazy, and to some extent, cause others death.
