Special needs students often demonstrate a higher degree of behavioral issues and as such require additional effort to ensure that they are supported and given conflict- resolution skills and coping mechanisms. Understanding and breaking the conflict cycle is a key concept that can be used in schools to manage extreme behaviors that special needs children carry with them and others. The conflict cycle starts off with a stress event that triggers a negative or irrational belief. The beliefs triggers feel of anxieties that manifest unto inappropriate behavior. Teachers can learn how to control their instinct to respond aggressively and recognizes the triggers. The key is to remain calm and professional and help the student to deescalate. To bring this cycle into my school there needs to be a strategic plan for implementation, feedback and support. Teachers can learn about the concept of the conflict cycle in an initial professional development workshop however this alone will have little to no effect. To ensure that teachers are equipped to handle behavioral issues there need other activities such as case studies, role playing and model videos. These activities can help teachers to be conscious and reflective in the process. Once teachers have been given a set of strategies they will be observed in the classroom by administrators or peer teachers to collect data. The data will help the teachers to see where they excelled and where have room for improvement. The data should be given to teachers and a conversation can be initiated on what worked and what did not. Administrators should refrain from analyzing the data and coming to a conclusion on their own as it can be met with resistance and defense. This is a new skill for teachers as well hence proper care must be taken to be support teacher and not be judgmental. Monthly meetings can be set up to facilitate sharing of new strategies and

It takes a while to change any behavior. Part of the plan should be effective consequence strategies. Planned consequences reinforce the acquisition and use of alternative skills and reduce the effectiveness of problem behavior should it continue to occur. Having planned consequences should help teach the student that his/her use of alternative skills is a better way to bring about the desired result. Because it does take a while for a behavior intervention plan to change a student 's behavior, it is important that the IEP team decide what will happen when the problem behavior still occurs. If it is a manageable behavior, it is important to come up with responses that discourage the problem behavior and do not provide the function or desired result of the behavior. In some cases the behavior may be extreme. The IEP team should develop a crisis plan to address those situations. First the group needs to define what is a crisis. Then they should describe the intervention procedures to be put into place including who will be involved. They must identify the resources needed to implement the plan and agree on the procedures for documenting the use of the crisis
As teachers, we are often expending more of our energy than is necessary by not taking time to implement a more comprehensive approach toward behavior management. In many cases one will need only a few of these strategies in place to create a positive behavioral support plan.
Additionally, aggression is a concerning behavior that Saita has engaged in on multiple occasions throughout the current school year, therefore, aggression should be addressed too. In order to address the current target behaviors, I recommend implementing the following behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) that will utilize the student success skills intervention model. After Saita participates in multiple small group sessions and classroom sessions with the school counselor, his BIP will address the following: A. Learning how to ask appropriate questions and identify when a break is needed Allowing Saita to engage in a requested activity and/or task after waiting for designated period of time, or completing a short amount of items (that will consist of taking no more than five minutes).

Behavior Modification is aimed at improving school and classroom behavior, and can give teachers additional tools to help them to deal proactively and effectively with behaviors that are disruptive to students and teachers in the classroom. When children are disruptive in the classroom it can cause a lot of problems for their classmates and their teacher. Yet, in the long run, it's the disruptive child themselves who is most impacted, on both a social and educational level (Epstein, Atkins, Cullinan, Kutash, & Weaver, 2008). Behavior modification techniques should be used in school, to change the negative behaviors, and increase the positive behaviors seen in these children.
