The Computer Geek
What defines a true computer geek? People have several different views on what a computer geek actually consists of. It is important to notice how society places certain people into this category automatically without even knowing much about them. Growing up with all sorts of television shows, most of the time there would be a nerdy character. That is how I believe my definition for a computer geek formed. Like all ideas in life, there was some kind of influence that shaped it.
When I think computer geek, I see a tall, lanky, eyeglass wearing guy. Not to be sexist, but I do not really think of a computer geek as a girl. Considering the fact that computers are advanced technology, it is only natural for computer geeks to be smart. They know all there is to know about computers, along with all the equipment that comes with it. For example, a broken printer or web camera would not threaten a computer geek. Also, not only do they know about computers, but usually know a lot about math or science. As I mentioned before, television shows, like Saved by the Bell had characters like Samuel “Screech” Powers. To me, he is the ultimate computer geek. His character was clumsy and sometimes lacked common sense. Screech would walk into walls, knock things over, and tends to have a “big mouth”. If you needed to tell someone a secret, your best choice would not be Screech. He never cared about fashion, so stylish clothes were insignificant to him. Media created this kind of image in many television shows for their characters.
Another thing that comes to my mind when I think about the profile of a computer geek is that they tend to be very introverted. Usually they keep to themselves and of course they “play” on their computers. The one thing that I think is really cool about the stereotypical computer geek is that they are real people. Cool meaning, unnatural of a stereotype. Most of the time stereotypes have a bad connotation. They do not try to be someone they are not. In other words they are not fake by not trying to impress anyone. Maybe they don’t have the greatest social skills.
definition of “geek,” which has been relentlessly used on those dedicated to the pursuit of

Before the Civil Rights Act of 1964, segregation in the United States was commonly practiced in many of the Southern and Border States. This segregation while supposed to be separate but equal, was hardly that. Blacks in the South were discriminated against repeatedly while laws did nothing to protect their individual rights. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 ridded the nation of this legal segregation and cleared a path towards equality and integration. The passage of this Act, while forever altering the relationship between blacks and whites, remains as one of history’s greatest political battles.
To begin, Kino, a brush house Mexican-Indian was poor but satisfied with his life before he found the pearl. Kino lived with his wife and son, which was all he needed. Living off of ancient traditions, when Kino has his pearl the greed begins to creep into him and the music of evil plays in his head and foreshadows what the pearl will lead to. “He smelled the breeze and he listened for any foreign sound of secrecy or creeping, and his eyes searched the darkness, for the music of evil was sounding in his head and he was fierce and afraid”(Steinbeck 35). The pearl, a small yet powerful token, puts Kino on a rollercoaster, that drags his whole family along with him.
The Big Five is system of testing personality by fitting the person’s traits to a system of categories. The five categories are extroversion versus introversion, neuroticism versus emotional stability, agreeableness versus antagonism, conscientiousness versus impulsiveness, and openness to experience versus resistance to new experience. Extroversion versus introversion measures the social aspect of personality. Extroversion on the extreme is when a person totally depends on social contact while introversion is where a person totally avoids it. Neuroticism versus emotional stability measures a person’s natural outlook on life. A neurotic person suffers from anxiety, depression, and guilt while the emotionally stable person is able to experience a variety of emotions that appropriately fit the situation. The third factor is agreeableness versus antagonism. Agreeableness is simply how prone the individual is to accept information in cooperation. Too much agreeableness leads to gullibilit...

These skills in particular are the plethora of programs at hand ready to be used and experienced by multiple users across the whole entire world. There multiple programs that helps man and progress science. There is one program that I would like to talk about which is called Foldit, a program that reframes fiendish scientific challenges as a competitive multiplayer computer game. It taps into the collective problem-solving skills of tens of thousands of people, most of whom have little or no background in science. This program helped the science community because a group of players discovered a structure of proteins which was a relative of HIV that causes AIDS in monkeys. These programs that can be used to solve science is a major reason why people should own computers. A gaming computer can be used for one’s work, to download and listen to music for free, and create pictures or videos. These programs of the sort is used for casual computer consumers and photo shoppers. There are also programs that are helpful while being free. Software can be expensive if you 're not smart about it. Free programs have been a mainstay of the desktop experience for decades, and the offerings only get more powerful and fascinating each year. There are multiple genres of programs such as ad blocks, malware detectors, adware detectors, cleaners and other useful essential programs needed for use. All of these programs should be open source so one cannot get a virus and other terrible programs installed inside one’s computer. Lastly there a multitude of social programs at use on the computer. Programs such as Skype, OovoO, and team speak are just a small list of programs one can use to meet new people by using their voices. These programs can bring a person with no friends to having a couple or even hundreds of friends and would bring joy to them in their life. There was someone I knew who had no
With technology rapidly changing as fast as we blink our eyes, it is important for people to learn as much as possible about the computer world if they want to maintain a decent lifestyle because the world we live in revolving around those technologies. As McKee points out, “most jobs now require intelligence and technical skill” (1). Each year, there is something either added or modified to computers, which forces people to learn computer literacy at a steady pace. While some love computers, others despise them. When comparing people’s attitudes towards computers, statistics show a gender gap that proves most females’ attitudes are drastically different from the attitudes of males. Several studies prove that women not only lack an interest in technology, but they also chose not to enroll in computer classes. Since computers and technology play an enormous role in the world today, more technology professionals are needed. It is extremely important for more women to become knowledgeable in these areas. Swain and Harvey argue, “This technology gender gap is affecting half our population and causing it to be unprepared to contribute to the demands of a high-tech twenty-first century” (17). While this may not seem like a serious issue to some, it is an issue that will ultimately lead to a bigger problem if not handled immediately. So why are there so few women in the technology field? To answer that question, I must first find out why are there so few women in the technology and computer classes, considering that this atmosphere is the most common place where the interest for computers is born.

When music education comes to one’s mind, one may think that it only applies when it comes to listening to diverse songs and beating two drum sticks together to the beat of songs. However, there is much more of a deeper meaning to it than that. According to the acclaimed author, J. Yudkin, “Music education is a field of study associated with the teaching and learning of music. It touches on all domains of learning, including the psychomotor domain (the development of skills), the cognitive domain (the acquisition of knowledge), and, in particular and significant ways, the affective domain, including music appreciation and sensitivity. The incorporation of music training from preschool to postsecondary education is common in most nations because involvement in music is considered a fundamental component of human culture and behavior. Music, like language, is an accomplishment that distinguishes us as humans” (Yudkin 4). The subject of expurgating music education has been discussed for numerous decades. However, those discussing this fail to realize that music education not only has an imperative part in the students’ grades improving but also betters their behavior. Music education should remain in the curriculums of today’s students because it has a positive effect on their upbringing, in turn leading them to better, more fruitfulfutures.
Society is currently in a period of rapid technological change. Computers are becoming a household item as well as a highly advanced tool for most every workplace. The entire world is interlinked through the Internet and information is being transferred across the globe in a matter of seconds. Computers are getting smaller and quicker and the amount of information they can store is getting larger. In this information society that we are becoming, a new advanced form of literacy threatens to debilitate anyone who refuses to step into the computer age. Computer illiteracy endangers not only the individual but our nation’s economy. Whether you like it or not, computers are the new language and those who refuse to accept this will be left in the dust . Computer illiteracy must be addressed now or there will be a whole new population of specialized illiterates in America.
