The Complex Character of Mathilde Loisel in The Necklace
The development of a character on paper is key to being able to create that character on stage. The development of character on paper is also key to understanding it in our imaginations. I read and understand stories and novels much the same way that I read a play script…through character analysis.
I believe that understanding characters in a short story, or any form of fiction for that matter, is essential to many reader’s abilities to grasp and enjoy the work.
I know in my own life I cannot connect to the plot of a story without the aid of a character. It is how the characters deal with the plot twists and turn that help emerse me in the story and mentally visualize what the story is about. Likewise, I visualize the setting through the eyes of the character. It is the character and his or her response to their environment that is the backbone of the story.
We see a shining example of this idea in Guy de Maupassant’s "The Necklace." The main character, Mathilde Loisel, is an incredibly complex character. One of the most interesting things about this woman is the fact that we can easily create, in our imaginations a "life before" this story for her and yet no dialogue describes that life. It is this past life that Mathilde’s perception of it that is the catalyst for everything that happens in this story.
This is the story of a woman who allows her bitterness and resentment to take her along a pathway of pain and misery. I think the key to understanding this character is to analyze what we know about her past and apply it to her reactions to her present. ...because of her pride and belief that she deserves better than she gets out of life, that she learned nothing through her ordeal. What could have made her a better person has only made her harder.
Looking at Mathilde’s character is difficult because you can approach her from many angles. One could see her as simply a misguided soul, or as I have described her more self-centered and self-occupied. In any case the key to understanding Mathilde is, as I’ve said before, examining her childhood. I find it incredible that something that is not even a part of the story, on paper, is the driving force behind the main character and indeed, I believe, the plot.

In “The Necklace,” Guy de Maupassant uses setting to reflect the character and development of the main character, Mathilde Loisel. As a result, his setting is not particularly vivid or detailed. He does not even describe the ill-fated necklace—the central object in the story—but states only that it is “superb” (7 ). In fact, he includes descriptions of setting only if they illuminate qualities about Mathilde. Her changing character can be connected to the first apartment, the dream-life mansion rooms, the attic flat, and a fashionable public street. [This is a well-defined thesis statement.]
Ethic is defined as a set of moral principles or values, a theory of system of moral values, the principles of conduct governing an individual or a group. In all its form, ethics deals with what is good and bad, and with moral duty and obligation. Hence, ethics is either a set of principles held by an individual or group, or the discipline that studies the set of principles (Duska, Duska, & Ragatz, 2011). Ethical theories provide principles that can be useful when solving dilemmas whereas business ethics refers to the ethical values that determine the interaction between a company and its stakeholders. The three major approaches in normative ethics identified are virtue ethics, deontological and utilitarianism (Kraut, 2012), but in this paper the focus is on the two major one proposed for the accounting profession – deontology and utilitarianism.
The first reward is my desire to work with young people. I want to interact with young people and help them learn and develop. Teaching is a satisfying profession. A national survey suggests that teachers as a group are satisfied with the profession and their level of satisfaction has increased in the last 25 years (Introduction to Teaching, 2007, pg. 5). Guy de Maupassant’s “The Necklace” is a twisted and broken fairytale.* Although this short story does embody some elements of fantasy, there is not merely enough evidence to support the claim that it is in fact a “ modern fairytale.” Fairytales often include themes such as enchantment, which is shown when the main character dreams, but is this really such an enchanting thing? Another theme found in fairytales is an encounter with the main struggle, in “The Necklace,” the main character also comes to face with a challenge, but this challenge does not accurately fit the characteristics of an encounter. A third example of an element of a fairytale is the presence of a weak male figure. In this case, there is a weak man but he does not remain weak throughout the story. One final characteristic of a fairytale is the journey that is taken, in “The Necklace,” the main character does take certain steps, but are these steps really considered a ‘journey’? As will be learned, none of these elements found in fairytales truly conform to “The Necklace,” therefore not making it a “modern fairytale.”+

The story is set in 19th century France.
