Dina Ursu Daugherty College English October 3, 2017 Summary and Reaction Essay In September of 2015, the Atlantic came out with an article titled “The Coddling of the American Mind” written by Greg Lukianoff, a Journalist, and Jonathan Haidt, a social psychologist. Lukianoff and Haidt have offered harsh critiques of the way college students have been protected by their parents from words and ideas they feel uncomfortable with, and get offended by. These students get trigger warnings, and microaggressions once exposed to an idea that alerts them. Emotional response takes over them and they are not able to communicate properly. Something that really surprised me is that “Emotional reasoning is now accepted as evidence”(Lukianoff and Haidt). A small definition is: when someone believes that everything they feel and every emotion they have is telling them something important that needs to be acted on. Once somebody feels offended by somebody else and voices it; then it is proof against the person that they said something wrong. Are you telling me that my feelings are proof? For example, I feel like if we are all vegans then we will all be cancer free. With this logic, my feelings are evidence that if everybody in the world is a vegan there will be no disease or sickness. I have found the cure! Where is my award? Some examples of microaggressions that Lukianoff and Haidt found from administrators at faculty leader-training sessions where, “‘America is the land of opportunity’ and ‘I believe the most qualified person should get the job.’” These statements are common sense. What is not understandable is how these are microaggressions. Colleges have little babies in their schools if they find these offensive in any way. America is a land of opportunity and it is true that when you usually apply to a job, the most qualified person gets the job. If these statements make someone angry they have been coddled to the maximum. It just goes to show how fragile the college population has become. Parents must stop coddling their children, and push them out of their cocoon into
Throughout America, people place a high value in their freedom of speech. This right is protected by the first Amendment and practiced in communities throughout the country. However, a movement has recently gained momentum on college campuses calling for protection from words and ideas that may cause emotional discomfort. This movement is driven mainly by students who demand that speech be strictly monitored and punishments inflicted on individuals who cause even accidental offense. The primary responsibility of student discipline falls on the school officials. Disciplining students helps with keeping order in the school, and the main reason for discipline is to keep the safety of entities of the school. However, discipline can be hard when the issues happen outside school grounds, especially for issues that occur through social media platforms, also known as off-campus speech. Off-campus speech is very tricky to deal with, and as school personnel, we need to make sure we do not take action based on students’ opinions until we know the facts and the law behind our actions.
However, “The Coddling of the American Mind” is not an informative piece, as it is filled with opinions and methods of emotional persuasion towards the author's belief upon the topic. The rhetorical device pathos is abundant towards the end of the article where the author is dependent on negative connotations and emotionally captivating statements in order to convey the idea that students should be aware of the potential to be offended and accepting of it as a part of life. Lukianoff and Haidt's negative vocabulary can be seen through words such as “Blaming” and “catastrophizing”; these words are synonymous with overreacting or the inability to accept and negatively impact the opposing side's argument about student anxiety. Caroline Bird writes the statement in her 1975 article “The Case Against College (Bird 15-18)” that not every high school graduate is ready to attend college. It is 2010 and this article is still valid today. Some of the college students I have been around were not mature enough for obedience school let alone college. A few of the points she makes in the article are: College has never worked its magic for everyone. Does it make you a better person? Are colleges responsible for your children? Are my children living in a country club? I will use some of my own experiences as an example of college life, as well as examples from my daughter’s college experience, along with my nephews as well. In her article “College Is a Waste of Time and Money”, Caroline Bird attempts to pursued her readers that colleges are overflowing with students who don’t belong there. Her article first appeared in Psychology Today (May 1975). Since this material is outdated, I find it hard to believe that most of the responses by students and parents quoted in the article still hold true. The author has set out to pursue the readers that college is a bad and unnecessary choice for today’s youth. Yet the author holds a bachelors and a masters degree from two different universities. I would think that if she thought college was really a bad choice and a waste of time and money, she would not have gone back to get her masters degree.
I will discuss these acts of microaggression with an emphasis on students in a post-secondary white-based environment. That is, a university or college that is predominantly biased towards a White culture. However, this general knowledge is not apparent to White people. Similar to microaggressions, John F. Dovidio discusses the concept of aversion racism, “a subtle, often unintentional form of bias that characterizes many White Americans who possess strong egalitarian values and who believe that they are nonprejudiced” (90).
Parents are forcing students to take classes they don’t want, leaving the student dull and unheard. Parents focus their kids to take challenging classes in order to satisfy their fear of the child getting into a good college. Students are told by parents and the school system that they must take this challenging class and extracurricular just meet ‘the standard quota” but reality it’s not true. It seems as though the majority of college students these days aren’t looking to further their education because it’s what they really want, they do it to please their parents, to be accepted by society, or because there’s nothing else for them to do (Bird, 372). These expectations have led to students being unhappy and stressed, and have pushed them into a school or a job that they don’t particularly care for.
Each and every person has their own thoughts and opinions throughout life, no matter how alike or different two individuals can be. In this generation, anyone can speak freely and debate as they please. Two very important individuals Carol Dweck whom is a professor of psychology at Stanford University, and Malcolm Gladwell whom is a Canadian journalist and speaker created two inciting pieces. “Mind-Sets and Equitable Education” by Dweck, and “The Matthew Effect” by Gladwell, are very similar as well as different pieces of writing. Dweck and Gladwell’s arguments appear different’ in reality due to education and sports, mindsets, and achieving success.
Sidney and Susan have found themselves in a volatile situation. They seem to already have contemplated the fact that this could get out of control if not handled correctly. With the students wearing shirts that have offensive language on them, the administration should make a decision to act upon this with more than a desire to avoid discomforting circumstances, but to act in loco parentis, and guide students to becoming respectable members of society. With many different options, what is the correct course of action to keep the students in class, and the parents out of the board room citing issues such as First Amendment free speech suppression and denial of due process?
