With the rise of the Abbasids in 750, the Islamic faith entered into an unprecedented age of reason. Looking towards great thinkers of classical Greco times such as Plato and Aristotle, a new breed of Islamic philosopher appeared, one that embraced reason and rationality along with revelation. It is in these times that the highly esteemed Muslim philosophers appeared, such as Al Kindi and Ibn Sinā, thinkers that would make leaps in theological study such as Ibn Sinā who had great effect western Latin theology under the name of Avicenna. It is against this background of rationality that the Mu’tazilite movement was able to develop. While still remaining a religious group, they were one that saw reason and revelation as complementary, each equally important attributes in living a proper life while also existing as a strict orthodox group devoted to bringing Islam to its purest form. Despite maintaining a stronger connection to rational thought than their contemporaries, the Mu’tazilite movement was short lived and was eventually relegated to the position of a minor sect in the Islamic world. This essay will explore the characteristics possessed by the Mu’tazilite school of thought and how these traits ultimately led to the downfall of the sect.
Emerging from the conflict between the Muri’jites and Kharijites regarding the fate of the Grave Sinner, the Mu’tazilites chose to remain detached from such issues. Despite the group’s attempts to place reason and rational thinking on supposedly equal ground with revelation or belief, their attempts failed when put into practice. The sect actually still exists today, albeit with a minor following and none of the power it had previously. That being said, the Mu’tazilites did introduce Greek style argumentation to Islamic theology, an addition that would remain in Islam underneath the preferred values of belief and faith. Mu’tazilism was an important step in the progress of Islamic theology for the concepts it introduced as well as for the example it set. Islam could incorporate reason into its practices, but ultimately not at the expense of people’s beliefs or at the power or role of God in Islamic society.

The internal view of Muslim historians was that God supported the Islamic faith and aided in its spread. The external, especially European, view was that the Muslim concept of jihad, or struggle, was the key element. Today, few historians emphasize religious zeal alone, but rather point to a combination of the Arab’s military advantages and the political weaknesses of their opponents. Equally important are the military strength and tactics of the Arabs.

In the history of concepts, there is no concern that Al-Ghazali’s figure emerges as one of the best Western thinkers. Considered as the prominent Sunni theologian that ever lived, Al-Ghazali’s polemic againstNeoplatonic thinkers, mainly Ibn Sina, dealt a fatal rage to philosophy within Islamic world. Written following his period of private study of philosophy, and completed in 1094 CE, Tahafut al-Falasifa carried the purpose of pursuing the analysis of reason that inspired his stint of cynicism, and was attempting to illustrate that reason is not self-reliant in the sphere of metaphysics and is incapable out of itself to construct an absolute world-view. Whereas, as Goldziher (1981) explains, Al-Ghazali uniquely held certain beliefs which he refuted in Tahafut, he wanted to demonstrate that reason on its own cannot establish that the world has the creator, two gods are unfeasible, God is not an entity or a body, and that he understand both himself and others, that the spirit is a self-resilient body. This paper will analyze Al-Ghazali’s argument on the eternity of the world, as found in his first areas of debate with philosophers and evaluated against Ibn Rushd’s answers.
Throughout his life, the Prophet Muhammad proved to be exceptionally adept at uniting diverse groups, negotiating a series of alliances and loyalty arrangements that spanned religious, tribal, ethnic, and familial lines (Berggren 2009). Among other things, this ability enabled Muhammad to forge a shared identity and found a nascent Islamic state from a diverse and even heterogeneous community (Rahman 1982; Ernst 2003, pp. 87-93). This diversity proved to be both a source of strength and conflict for Islam, and following the death of Muhammad early Islamic communities engaged in extensive debates not only about the nature of his teachings or how to carry his legacy forward, but also about the terms that should be used to define his authority. The Islamic tradition, as reflected in Naguib Mahfouz’s Zaabalawi, has over the course of history had an incredible impact on Arab culture. In Mahfouz’s time, Islamic practices combined with their political relevance proved a source of both great power and woe in Middle Eastern countries. As alluded to in Zaabalawi, Mahfouz asserts the fact that not all Muslims attain religious fulfillment through this common tradition, and other methods outside the scope of Islam may be necessary in true spiritual understanding.
Through day-to-day knowledge of what is happening in the world there is observable evidence that Islamic followers have employed different techniques to proclaim ‘power’. The techniques being employed are basically inflicting pain in the opponent by methods of kidnapping, hijackings, and recruiting members (such as Al-Qaeda in the Middle East) in order to make them a more powerful and a more appealing group in their societies. According to Mandaville, Islam is directly linked to politics (they cannot be separated); Muslims wanted to challenge new technological innovations as well as new institutions without forgetting about their religious values. Mandaville proclaims an important aspect of the Islamic religion. During the Ottoman Empire many Muslims gained important power and began to interact with Europeans in order to move into a more modern system; but times have changed.

On the Harmony of Religion and Philosophy gives us insight to the philosophical views of a certain sect of Islam, and how it influenced it 's followers to view the world around them. Although it is helpful, this is written from a very biased position and it cannot be said that the views of the author are the views of Muslim culture as a whole. There are many differences between Islam and the United states like our religion, clothes, and food, and becoming a Christian or a Muslim, but Islam is the second largest religion in the world, so it’s important to a lot of people. The followers of Islam are called Muslims. Becoming a Muslim is not an easy process. You must do a long list of tasks.
