The Character of Marek Shimerda in My Antonia
In Willa Cather's novel, My Antonia, Marek Shimerda is starved for attention because he is constantly ignored due to his mental retardation. It is solely because of his handicap and the assumption of his inability to help out with the farming and household chores that his family views him as helpless which results in Marek's strange and awkward actions. He is presented as an ill minded young man throughout the novel, repeatedly excused, and resides in the shadow of his healthy, fully functional older brother, Ambrosh Shimerda.
Marek is a token character that is simply taken for granted. He is portrayed as strange and useless. When Jim Burden and his family first meet the Bohemians, he is approached by Marek, the second eldest son. "As he approached us, he began to make uncouth noises, and held up his hands to show us his fingers, which were webbed to the first knuckle, like a duck's foot. When he saw me draw back, he began to crow delightedly" (Cather, 24). Everyone who encounters this poor boy instantly views him as `crazy'. All of his actions are presented as strange. "The crazy boy, seeing the food, began to make soft, gurgling noises and stroked his stomach" (Cather, 60), and evidently he is. "The crazy boy went with them [outside], because he did not feel the cold. I believed he felt the cold as much as any one else, but he liked to be thought insensible to it. He was always coveting distinction, poor Marek" (Cather, 82)!
Because of everyone's inability to understand and relate to Marek, he is pitied and constantly excused. After Jim`s reaction to Marek`s webbed fingers, Marek begins to express himself, maybe even trying to communicate with what could be a new friend, but he is immediately quieted. ""Hoo, hoo-hoo, hoo-hoo!" like a rooster. His mother scowled and said sternly, "Marek!" then spoke rapidly to Krajiek in Bohemian. "She wants me to tell you he won't hurt anybody, Mrs. Burden. He was born like that..." No one bothers to befriend this young man or even tries to talk to him throughout the entire book. Although he is obviously mentally challenged, it is not evident that any one of the characters in Cather's novel tries to reach out to this young man or teach him to be a helpful resource around the Shimerdas' household.
He emphasizes what he believes goes largely unnoticed, like Sissy’s unique ability to succeed in life, given her handicap. Yet, does not deny that living outside social rules is extremely difficult and
An excellent example of this view of the mentally handicapped can be found in John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men, with the character Lennie. The other characters in this novel such as George and Curley treat Lennie as if he were a child all throughout the novel. George never lets him do any of the talking when t...
Potato and Osmosis Investigation PLANNING: (P) Some background Information: Water Potential and Living Plant Cells Plant Cells in Pure Water: If plant cells are placed in pure water (a hypotonic solution) water will initially move into the cells. After a period of time the cells will become turgid. Turgor pressure is the pressure exerted against the cell wall by contents of the cell. At first most water movement is into the cell. As the turgor pressure increases water will begin to diffuse out of the cell at a greater rate, eventually equilibrium will be reached and water will enter and leave the cell at the same rate.
the character I chose was Rudy. rudy is very persistent in playing baseball. I first saw this character trait when even tho Alfredo said he could not run, Rudy told him that he was a good hitter, Again Alfredo argued against him and said that the team would not agree. he went home and was let down but was still determined to get on the team. He also never let his leg brace get to him. When the team played the leopards, they were very sure that they could beat a boy with a leg brace, but Rudy did not let that stop him from being the hitter. he was then supposed to hit a home run but he didn't hit the ball as hard as expected & Alfredo twisted his ankle trying to run. so the next time Rudy was up to bat he hit 2 strikes then he hit the ball,
While he is a very isolated and lonely person, he does seem to make an attempt to open up to people, even if he doesn't want to at first. This is first shown when Lennie enters his room, and while he tries to force Lennie to leave in the beginning, he soon gives in and lets Lennie join him. He also talks to Candy occasionally, but not often as Candy has to soon revert back to being racist towards him, just to fit in with the other men due to his own loneliness and desperation.

In the story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, the narrator's relationship with Doodle, his brother, is more cruel than caring. For example, the narrator as a young child makes plans to kill Doodle by smothering him with a pillow because he is delicate and he is possibly not all there. Even though the narrator is young , it is sinful to want to kill one's one own disabled little brother. The narrator does not want to accept his brother for who he is and believes that Doodle is a disappointment. Furthermore, he leaves his fragile brother in the storm by himself even after Doodle begs him not to leave. The narrator has a hateful streak and does not take pay heed to the words of his frail brother, because of his egoism and pride. The narrator

The major themes of Franz story were inspired by the cultural and historical events in Prague, which is the author’s town. The town was full of hostility which was caused by economic status and differences in people’s cultural backgrounds. The story is told using the interior monologue styles. It focuses on the thoughts and feelings of the main character which support the themes of abandonment and troubled relationship.

From the time that the boys land on the island, both a power struggle and the first signs of the boys' inherent evil, Piggy's mockery, occur. After blowing the conch and summoning all the boys to come for an assembly, an election is held. "I ought to be chief , said Jack with simple arrogance, because I'm chapter chorister and head boy"(Golding 22). After Ralph is elected Chief, Jack envies his position and constantly struggles for power with Ralph throughout the rest of the novel, convincing the rest of the boys to join his tribe rather than to stay with Ralph. Also, soon after the boys arrive at the island, Piggy, a physically weak and vulnerable character, is mocked and jeered at by the other boys. After trying to recount all of the liluns' names, Piggy is told to "Shut up, Fatty," by Jack Merridew. Ralph remarks by saying, "He's not Fatty. His real name's Piggy." All of the boys on the island, except for Piggy, laugh and make themselves more comfortable at Piggy's expense. "A storm of laughter arose and even the tiniest child joined in. For a moment the boys were a closed circuit of sympathy with Piggy outside."(Golding 21). The boys instinctively become more comfortable with one another after Piggy's mockery and create a bond, leaving Piggy on the outside.
