Journal 6 “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe is a short story that was first published in 1846. The story takes place in Italy during the carnival season. Montresor is the narrator and Poe wrote the story in first person. This story only has three characters; that are named Montresor, Fortunato, and Luchesi. Luchesi is only mentioned in the short story as a dig to aggravate Fortunato. This story is about feeling entitled, superior to others and arrogance; however, it also shows us how letting others get to us will consume us and fill us with hate. Fortunato had insulted Montresor several times which then Montresor valued revenge and this is what the plot is about. Montresor did not take revenge right away, he waited for the right time and allowing his hate towards Fortunato to consume him. Montresor now lets Fortunato know that no one insults him and gets away with it; however, Fortunato does insult him again with his comment about not being a Masons (a fraternal elite group of men). Montresor reveals he is a different type of mason and even pulls out a trowel. With the reveal of the trowel and mason materials underneath the bones, the full plan is revealed and now readers know what is to come of Fortunato. Montresor builds a wall with Fortunato inside before the last brick is laid Montresor throw in his torch and calls for Fortunato. Unfortunately, Fortunato does not answer, it makes you wonder if he was passed out or did he die from the mold. The sealing of the Fortunato’s tomb was not the end of the story; the end was when Montresor reveals that this had taken place fifty years
