When the term Frankenstein is said, what comes to mind is the bulky, square headed, green character seen around Halloween. Until watching the array of films and reading the original novel by Mary Shelly, this is all Frankenstein was to me. Reading the origin of this staple character and seeing the film adaptions shows that there is much more to Frankenstein than being a creature for a Holiday. The story of Frankensteins opens many cans of worms in regards to spiritual believes and who the true monster is in this story. Although the name Frankenstein is often used in referring to the monster created, after seeing the films it is made clear that Frankenstein is the name of the doctor who create the monster, who remains nameless. The story of Frankenstein demonstrates both pros and cons for each side of the argument. When the creature is first brought to life, although unaware of sociably acceptable behavior he catches on quickly. While hiding out in a families pig pen he over hears the families struggle with lack of food from the crops and uses his strength to harvest an entire field for them, simply out of the kindness of his heart. After being shown kindness from the blind man the monster desires common affection, leading him to demand a companion be made for him. Of all the film adaption, this one gives true understanding and character depth of the original novel. compared to the early adaption which are placed in the horror genre, the 1994 version brings to life the main themes of the novel that don’t seem to be meant as a horror at all. Mary Shelley may have wrote the novel as fictional piece based of imagination, or should could have more meaningful themes and idea’s disguised by fictions, we’ll never know, but the later film version leans more towards the idea of a deeper meaning than simple another monster

Since the original novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, to the multiple movie adaptations, the monster is almost always predicted as the monster of the story. It may be his physical appearance, from his tall, broad frame, to the signature screws in his neck. It may also be his unnatural upbringing and interpreted evil characteristics. We have grown to fear the monster, which ultimately, has masked the true monster, Dr. Frankenstein. With each coming movie, the good side of the monster is brought to light, while the real monster shows his true colors.
The creature’s moral ambiguity characteristic was a vile ingredient to the construction of this novel Frankenstein because it made the reader 's sympathies with him even after the audience knows he had committed murder because the readers had seen the truth this creature had to face. This is an ironic and unfortunate example of a film that would have really been considered a lot better than it is if it were not for the book upon which it is based. It is clear that the film is strong and that it is well made, but when compared to Shelley's novel, it's really a pretty sad mess. The film by itself is more than able to captivate and impress, but to someone who knows the original story, it is a weak attempt to bring the story of Frankenstein and his monster to the big screen.
If we put Frankenstein's creation beside problems we face today, we can see a clear line. The story about the monster, can be translated in to being our issues today with the tampering of nature. We have a handful of problems, a handful of changing nature, but nothing in these days has gone as far as making a man out of dead bodies. When this comes, we can argue that things have gone too far – but how far things have gotten now, it is not a bad thing in my opinion.
Throughout Frankenstein, one assumes that Frankenstein’s creation is the true monster. While the creation’s actions are indeed monstrous, one must also realize that his creator, Victor Frankenstein, is also a villain. His inconsiderate and selfish acts as well as his passion for science result in the death of his friend and family members and ultimately in his own demise. Throughout the novel, Shelley investigates the idea of monstrosity. She makes the point that a monster does not have to be genuinely evil in order to be considered monstrous.
In the novel, Frankenstein, a doctor named Victor Frankenstein created a monster. Victor’s monster was created using old human parts, chemicals, and a “spark.” Victor wanted to create this monster in order to benefit mankind, and for the purpose of playing God. Victor thought his creation would turn out great, but in all actuality, his monster ended up terribly wrong (Shelley, 145). The monster was a deformed man, standing eight feet tall, with yellow eyes, black hair, black lips, and skin that did not conceal his internal features (Shelley, 144-145). Even though the monster was very grown, he had the mind of a newborn child, and he was very kind and gentle (Shelley, 327). The monster’s appearance terrified Victor, and he immediately abandoned it. Imagine being brought into the world to be completely thrown away by whoever created you, for being born. Now, this is the perspective of the Monster that Frankenstein created. The Monster was immediately hated as soon as he came to life. His own creator found him to be repulsive: “ I had desired it with an ardour that far exceeded moderation; but now that I had finished, the beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart.” Pg 59 PP 3. This hatred caused the monster to feel awful and run away in despair. Victor Frankenstein felt that he was justified to give up on his creation because it was ugly. This is completely unfair to the Monster because it has not done anything wrong, yet Victor Frankenstein feels he has the right to immediately turn his back on his creation. This is something that is frowned upon in society, but is sometimes the case. If this betrayal had not have happened, the Monsters nature could have been completely different.
