Words are very powerful they can either create or destroy. Liesel (a 9 year old girl) learns to read in the beginning and in the end is a very fluent reader. She does this by first learning to read the gravedigger's handbook. As she gets better at reading, people of the Town rely on her to read to them during the bombings in the shelter. And towards the end Max writes his own book to Liesel in appreciation for all the reading she did for him. So, In The Book Thief words are used in more of a comfort and loving way rather that a mean or cruel way.
Liesel’s life starts of pretty terribly. First off her brother dies and then her Mom leaves her. Reading is something that she does to get her mind off those things. Once she gets to her foster family all she has is her gravediggers handbook. This story was based off of Liesel and her Power of Words. Her words were a tree. The Nazi’s were trying to chop it down but since her words are so powerful they couldn’t. “Many hours had passed, and still the Fuhrer’s ax hadn’t even took out a chunk of the tree.” (Zusak 447) One night, after Liesel read this, she was going to go write about it herself in the basement. That night another bombing happened and Liesel was the only one on Himmel Street to survive. This is because she was writing about Max’s book, which was on the power of words. “He had saved my life,” (Zusak 528) Liesel states this after she realizes that she was the only one on Himmel Street to survive.
