The Big Sleep: Writing Style
How can I humble myself? I can write about Raymond Chandler's style. I am amazed that someone can write with a style that appears to be almost effortless. No, it seems completely effortless. Breezing through this book is very easy. There are no seams. Chandler's "no buts about it," "hard-boiled" style, characters and story are completely cohesive. All elements seem perfectly placed. The narrator and interesting use of figurative language contribute to the unity in the text.
First, the narrator sets the mood of the text. He is a character, an agent in the action of the story. He fits it completely. He's a real "cool" guy, Marlowe. I picture him just sitting back in a thick green leather chair in a poorly lit, dingy little room, slowly drawing on a cigarette (watching the ash grow), swirling a drink in the other hand and spilling out the story in the concise, natural rhythm of his speech &emdash; street speech. He is super-casual. He upholds his law; he's not bad -- he's not good either. He's laid back. He's street smart &emdash; he knows people. He doesn't always follow the law, but he fights the scofflaws. He's Sherlock underground American style. He's a lady's man. He's in control. He's a one on the Richter Scale. He's suave enough to spill out awesome figurative language with seamless ease.
No dearth of similes exists in this book. Sometimes Chandler decorates a page with more than four. They stand out. The similes are the fragrance of the flower. The only circumstance in which no simile can be found on a page is if the page is full of dialogue. Chandler's similes function interestingly in his text &emdash; they seem to be the only art in his concise style. Some of his similes are almost silly, so they really stand out from the casual mood of the text; "his neck stuck up out of [his coat] like a celery stalk" (25). Yet others are beautiful and create very strong images such as those in Chapter Twenty-six when Marlowe is tracking Henry Jones. Marlowe picks a lock and " there was a dry click, like a small icicle breaking.
In the first chapter of the novel, the author gives the narrator’s story an informal, conversational tone by using “I” frequently, short, simple sentences, basic vocabulary and conversational phrases like “you know what I mean.” (pg. 8) The narrator seems like a nice old man: happy, brave, and compassionate. The narrator is an older, grown man working in an “office” and walking in a small town neighborhood. (pg. 8). He seems generally happy and is “walking along whistling” (pg. 8) as he walks. He does not get flustered easily because he doesn’t run away when a pack of dogs is coming at time but just “moves over the the edge of the sidewalk” (pg. 9) to let them pass. He was not too sentimental at first as he was worried about the “sanitation department [having to] pick up a dead dog” (pg. 9) instead of worrying about the poor animal and his suffering. However, when the dog reminds him of a time “when an old hound like that had given his life so that [he] might live” (pg. 10), the narrator gets emotional. His “fighting blood was boiling” (pg. 11) and he decides to intervene. It is clear that he is brave because he steps into the middle of a dog fight to save the old hound dog (pg. 11). Next, the narrator is kind and compassionate toward the dog when he “almost cried” (pg. 12) at the state of the old dog, and then baths and feeds him (pg.
The Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines massacre as “the act or an instance of killing a number of usually helpless or unresisting human beings under circumstances of atrocity or cruelty” or “a cruel or wanton murder” (m-w.com). Essentially a massacre results in either the death of many people or death by cruel means. The Boston Massacre occurred on March 5, 1770, in Boston, Massachusetts and involved American colonists and British troops. The colonists, upset by recent laws enacted by the British, taunted a smaller group of British soldiers by throwing snowballs at them (Boston Massacre Historical Society). In response, the soldiers fired upon the unarmed colonists leaving five people dead and six wounded (Phelan, 131). Even though the event in Boston on March 5, 1770, in which blood was shed, and called the Boston Massacre, the actions which took place on that day did not constitute a massacre. Since only five people were killed and six wounded and there was no evidence of cruelty, the name Boston Massacre was likely a propaganda ploy by Samuel Adams to rally the colonists against the British instead of a true massacre.
One of the biggest determinants for the success of a writer is engaging and maintaining the interest of a variety of readers. While there are endless approaches to telling a story, as well as many writing styles, the most effective writings are the ones that successfully impress a diverse audience. The essays Eating Chili Peppers and Conforming to Stand Out: A Look at American Beauty are two different styles of essays that unveil a similar search for self-gratification. While the essays cover different topics and the authors use different writing styles and approaches to engage the reader, they both unveil a similar underlying message of a search for self-gratification.
Chandler goes into great detail describing the different characters--most notably, the women. There are many sections where the shrewd detective is quick to notice (and make analogous) certain physical features of the Sternwood daughters; not that I blame him. Early in the novel he observes Mrs. Regen's legs in the following manner. "They were visible to the knee and one of them well beyond...The calves were beautiful, the ankles long and slim and with enough melodic line for a tone poem" (17). I think that every guy reading this book perked up when reading of Vivian's legs. In this sexual sense, the similes work. Those long sentences would be much easier to read if there were more comparisons of Vivian's legs to a "melodic line for a tone poem".
On March 5, 1770, an event occurred in Boston, which consisted of British troops shooting upon colonists. People refer to this as a massacre, but they only look at one side of the story. The Boston Massacre in 1770 was not really a massacre, but a mutual riot (Boston Massacre History Society). British soldiers went to America to keep the people of Boston in order. However, the soldier's presence there was not welcomed by the Bostonians and this made things worse (Boston Massacre History Society). The British had to fire their guns because the Bostonians were antagonizing the soldiers, which caused five people to die. The Bostonians made the soldiers feel threatened so in turn they acted in self-defense. The British soldiers and their Captain had to go through a trial, to prove they were not to blame for what had occurred.
The Boston Massacre is considered by many historians to be the first battle of the Revolutionary War. The fatal incident happened on March 5 of 1770. The massacre resulted in the death of five colonists. British troops in the Massachusetts Bay Colony were there to stop demonstrations against the Townshend Acts and keep order, but instead they provoked outrage. The British soldiers and citizens brawled in streets and fought in bars. “The citizens viewed the British soldiers as potential oppressors, competitors for jobs, and a treat to social mores'; (Mahin 1). A defiant anti-British fever was lingering among the townspeople.
In Herman Melville's short story, Bartleby, the Scrivener, the narrator's attitude towards Bartleby is constantly changing, the narrator's attitude is conveyed through the author's use of literary elements such as; diction-descriptive and comical, point of view-first person, and tone-confusion and sadness.
Through his play Priestley endeavoured to convey a message to the audiences, that we could not go on being self obsessed and that we had to change our political views. He used the Birling family as an example of the Capitalist family that was common amongst the higher classes in 1912, who took no responsibility for other people and he showed this with the power of Socialism, represented by the inspector; the uneasy facade put on by the Birling family to cover up their real flaws and how they have treated those whom they considered to be lower class could not stand up to any scrutiny without shame for what had happened, showing that they know they have been wrong.
Smith likes to leave the reader with the possibility of more intrigue to an already verbose tale or anecdote. No explanation (or rather exploration) is left simply explained in full, the reader is given a nugget of something else to think about as well: “So there existed fathers who dealt in the present, who didn’t drag ancient history around like a ball and chain. So there were men who were not neck-deep and sinking in the quagmire of the past” (271). Smith is certainly keen on using metaphor and simile as there will often be two or sometimes three metaphors or similes all packed in a single elongated sentence. “He wanted it to be perfectly quiet and still, like the inside of an empty confessional or the moment in that brain between thought and speech” (4). Simile is Smith’s most used literary device, one used affectively
The Boston Massacre was one of the most important events that have ever taken place in Colonial America. It sparked the start of the Revolutionary War, which caused many of those loyal to Britain to rally with those who wanted freedom and it was considered a turning point for many colonists, to fight the British.
“Style is how you write, and you write well when you are interested. A writer’s own interest in the story is the essential thing. If there is a flash of warmth in him it is repeated in the reader. The emotion is bigger than style.
A virtuoso of suspense and horror, Edgar Allan Poe is known for his Gothic writing style. His style is created through his use of punctuation, sentence structure, word choice, tone, and figurative language. Punctuation-wise; dashes, exclamation marks, semicolons, and commas are a favorite of Poe. His sentences vary greatly; their structures are influenced by punctuation. Much of his word choice set the tone of his works. Figurative language colors his writings with description. Such is observed in the similarities between two of his most well-known short stories, “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Tell-Tale Heart”
In the novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime by Mark Haddon, the main character is named Christopher Boone. Christopher is diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome which is a form of Autism. He writes a book as a project which the school aid, Siobhan, suggested. The question that’s been debated is whether Christopher is actually a reliable narrator or not, and this would be because he pays close attention to small things he might miss major details. Christopher is a reliable narrator because he is honest, he is literal, and provides a clear picture that’s difficult to be misinterpreted.
Love is an essential human desire. Once it is caught, dramatic, unexpected changes in ones life occur. Protecting the people one loves is a natural instinct that cannot be controlled. William Shakespeare demonstrates this in Twelfth Night through the relationship between Antonio and Sebastian. Furthermore, Viola continues to ensure the happiness of Orsino is met even if that means sacrificing the happiness of herself. Also, love is evident when one pays attention to, and dedicates himself to the small details in other peoples lives. William Shakespeare demonstrates in Twelfth Night the nature of true love through loyal friendship, bold romance and secretive love.
What is love? In William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night love is nothing more than another disguise. It is an illusion that fools everyone. Orsino, Olivia, Sebastian, and Viola do any of them find love in the end? No, they find nothing more than a disguise, an illusion of love. By analyzing each of these characters, their thoughts and feelings of, and their experiences with love throughout this play, we can determine that in the end, none of them have found true, genuine love.
