I’m not typically a guy who watches romantic comedies. Or romances. Or comedies. So, it might seem odd, but I’ve been curious about “The Big Sick” since this summer when I heard an interview with star and co-screenwriter Kumail Nanjiani on Filmspotting. I’ve now seen this critically adored romantic comedy drama. It’s fine, but not worth the hubbub that surrounded it. This movie tells the true story of Nanjiani and his wife Emily Gordon (played by Zoe Kazan). They meet at one of his shows one night and start dating, though neither of them is looking for a relationship. Things take an unexpected term for the duo when Emily contracts a mysterious illness that forces Kumail to meet her parents and face his family and feelings. Faced with the task of playing a younger version of himself, …show more content…
She does a little more of the emotional heavy lifting, a task she completes with skill. Like Nanjiani, she is charming and likeable in that awkward kind of way. The other two standout performances come from Holly Hunter and Ray Romano as Emily’s parents. They both provides layers and nuance to their characters, making them feel like real people. Of course, they also both get a chance to give a couple of funny lines, which they do well. A huge factor that people praise about “The Big Sick” is the way the Gordon, Nanjiani and director Michael Showalter balance comedy and drama. And indeed, the filmmakers show some prowess at balancing the humor with the serious subject matter this movie tackles. It has a few really funny moments that coexist with a couple moving scenes. The screenplay, in particular, is impressive just because of how authentic it feels. It’s clear that Nanjiani and Gordon dramatized some aspects of their relationship, as they had to in order to make a movie, but for the most part this feels incredibly true and raw. It has a feeling of a true story about it in a way that isn’t maudlin. It just seems
Criticisms (Favourable): Very original, intelligent plot. Well-written characters that aren’t two dimensional and who make human decisions (David’s father, who may seem like a cruel man but who is really just doing what he was brought up to believe is right).
The movie is, most likely, done well enough to intrigue its intended audience. It captured the theme and story line of the book. It falls short, though, when compared to the beautiful, sensitive and contemplative prose of Natalie Babbitt. One could only hope that a viewing of the film will lead the watcher to try the book and be delighted all the more.
Inside Out is a film about a young girl named, Riley, whose world gets turned upside down once her family moves from Minnesota to San Francisco. In this film, Riley’s five main emotions are personified. Riley, who is only eleven years old, is known for her joyous attitude but with the drastic change of lifestyle, she begins to show and feel many other emotions. As Riley and her family are adjusting to their new surroundings, she becomes more irritable and rebellious. As depicted in the film, Riley’s emotions, Joy and Sadness, get lost trying to find their way back to Headquarters. While Joy and Sadness are gone; Fear, Disgust, and Anger are left in charge of Riley’s actions. On account of Joy is not being there to help Riley make rational decisions, Fear,
I do not agree with Emilys deed, but admire her inflexible love. She reminds me to be careful when choosing a beloved. It is important to find someone who suits you. The other protagonist, Sarty, shows strong self-awareness. He is young, but he is able to determine right and wrong.
The book and the movie were both very good. The book took time to explain things like setting, people’s emotions, people’s traits, and important background information. There was no time for these explanations the movie. The book, however, had parts in the beginning where some readers could become flustered.
The Bad and The Beautiful (1952) and State and Main (2000) are films within films that unmask Hollywood Cinema as a dream factory and expose the grotesque, veneer hidden by the luxury of stars. The Bad and the Beautiful, directed by Vincent Minnelli, is a black and white film narrated in flashback form. The films theatrical nature requires more close-ups than wide-screen shots to capture the character’s psychological turmoil. For example, Fred and Jonathan’s car ride is captured in a close-up to signify their friendship; however their relationship deteriorates after Jonathan’s deceit. While the camera zooms out, Fred stands alone motionless. Here, Fred is captured from a distance at eye-level and he becomes ostracized by the film industry and
Played by Christy Czajkowski, I thoroughly enjoy her acting. I personally felt like her character was realistic and comical. She had the ability to project her voice and be open to the audience while still portraying a “closed” emotion such as discouragement. In addition Christ y used her props very well. She glasses gave a good support to her character and the portrayal of her character. She showed true feelings of envy, discouragement, pride, and happiness. I am always supporting the underdog and in this play Helena I the one with the lesser advantage. I appreciate the fact that she got the man she wanted in the end.
...movie that I fell in love with. But most of all I love how the story line is a great overlap into the cinematically engaging movie. There is a great use of camera, timing, shots and story line that are portrayed in this movie without being too overwhelming. This allows the audience to relax during the movie and just take in the scenes as a story from reality. To this day, and even still doing this paper I still come to find different aspects of the movie that I missed the previous times I have watched it.
The movie Outbreak is a wonderful portrayal of how the Chain of Infection works in an epidemic and pandemic outbreak of a disease. The shows how quickly the disease gained power and was responsible for sickness and death in a small community. Pathogens that invade the body have 5 requirements for a successful invasion on their host whether it is a human or animal. I will further review how the movie successfully reflects the reservoir/host, portal of exit, mode of transmission, portal of entry and susceptible host to provide the perfect Outbreak of the disease. The same model still used today in science.
showing that this man has come of age as a true adult, possibly due to
For this assignment, the movie “The Help” was chosen to review and analyze because it presents a story of fighting injustice through diverse ways. The three main characters of the movie are Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan, a young white woman, Aibileen Clark, and Minny Jackson, two colored maids. Throughout the story, we follow these three women as they are brought together to record colored maids’ stories about their experiences working for the white families of Jackson. The movie explores the social inequalities such as racism and segregation between African Americans and whites during the 1960s in Jackson, Mississippi.
Overall, the film isn’t half as epic as Emmerich’s previous. blockbusters or half as entertaining. The dialogues are about as interesting as watching paint dry and the bland characters have about as much depth as a puddle in the street! The storyline isn’t exactly. deep, introspective stuff, either.
A great direction was given to the actors and also the actors did a fantastic job on bringing the characters live on the screen. Also great usage of various literary devices also add to the success of the movie. However the movie didn’t end up as a financial success but it gave a lot of inspiration to various filmmakers all around the world and also received various nominations for
From total government control to completely relying on the people to pay, health care policies range from one extreme to the other. In the film Sick around the world, it focused on five different democratic countries and how they have decided to handle getting health care for all of their citizens. The content provided in this film was very interesting since I have never really taken the time to realize that health care could be different in other countries. Although I was aware of the fact that health care policies are hot topics in the political world, I did not fully realize how broken our health care system was.
I like the film very much. I think its one of the best films I’ve seen ever. The comedy in the film is just my humour, and the action was okay.
