The 21st century has brought about many trends and technologies conforming America as an egotistical society. With growing popularity in everything from fad diets to Botox, it seems as though people would do almost anything to maintain a certain look. With a healthy body due to extreme diets and a wrinkle free face induced by anti-aging injections, there is another beauty extreme that people seek: a tan to die for. Since early two thousand up until the present, there has been an excessive increase in the popularity of indoor tanning and the use and misuse of tanning beds. With the many known harmful effects that artificial tanning has on its consumer, states have put laws in place to limit those exposed to these ultra violet rays. However, that being said, there is no universal law for the age restriction of tanning salons. We all know the risks of tanning beds and that they are extremely harmful when abused, yet many are unaware that today these beds are strictly regulated and when used in moderation, they can have health benefits. Taking into account the risks and benefits of artificial tanning, the age for tanning be 18 universally. There is a mix of age restrictions put in place across the fifty states. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures (2014), some states ban the use of tanning beds for those under 14, some ban it under 16, and others require parental permission for use between the ages 14 and 18. Only seven states have taken action and put a complete ban on tanning for all minors under 18, unless prescribed medically by a physician (National Conference of State Legislatures, 2014). Many bills have been drawn up by numerous states in attempts to take a stricter control on tanning consumers; however,... ... middle of paper ... ...hi, & Linos, 2012, p.1). These indoor tanning facilities are taking a toll on the health status of individual’s, which in turn, results in a huge financial burden on the United States health costs due to the necessary treatment these cancers (Watson et, al., 2014, p. e4). It is difficult to reinforce this knowledge to adolescents because they seem to believe that they are invincible. Teens attending these indoor tanning facilities are focused on the here and now motto. Being tan makes these adolescents feel more attractive in their “golden years.” They are more concerned with that notion rather than what is to come in the later years of their life. However, what if a family member or even themselves were to be diagnosed with skin cancer, which later lead to death? Are these tragic circumstances the only means to making adolescent realize how serious this issue is?
First of all, the history off the tanning bed did not start when tan skin was hip. The first indoor tanning lamp was created for medicinal purposes in 1906. It was used on ricketts patients to help them develop stronger bones .# How does a tanning bed create stronger bones? Sunlight produces vitamin D in the body, which allows absorption of calcium. The absorption of calcium creates stronger bones. This tanning lamp was not thought about again until the 1970s, when a man named Friederich Wolff came along. Wolff used “artificially produced indoor tanning UV light to study athletes and how they might benefit from more exposure to sunlight.”# The artificial indoor light also gave the subjects of his study a darker complexion. In the fifties, the invention of the bikini popularized tanning outdoors significantly.# This trend still remained in the seventies.
The number of individuals using tanning beds is extremely large. Nearly 30 million people in the U.S. tan in tanning salons every year; on average, that's more than 1 million people a day who are baking themselves under tanning lamps (“The Dangers of”). Tanning beds are a large attraction to individuals. 2.3 million teens visit tanning salons in the U.S. every year (“The Dangers of”). Teenagers feel as if they need to tan to look good or to feel like they fit in. A review of seven studies revealed that your risk of melanoma increases by 75 percent if you're exposed to tanning beds before the age of 35 (“The Dangers of). Not all individuals realize the increased risk of getting melanoma by lying in the tanning bed.
At the same time, it also helps your body recover and recuperate. Here are some important benefits of using a foam roller:
Indoor Tanning beds are controversial and not without risk. The positives and negitives should be told straight up when going to a tanning salon. The risk of developing melanoma skin cancer from over exposure to UVA and UVB radiation has been proven and well documented by the medical field and research. There are a few benefits of using indoor tanning beds such as a positive mood boost, healing of some types of skin disorders and in the production of vitamin D. One must be educated about the use of indoor tanning before deciding to indulge and weigh the risks and benefits before making the decision to go tanning long term.
Informing you on a everyday thing some girls do, which is tanning. Two main questions you have to ask yourself is it healthy? And will it cause skin cancer ? Well to answer both of those questions you can get skin cancer, and it is healthy for you. Only some parts of it is healthy though, not all of it. And thats what we will be explaining in this paper today. We both do tan so we’re not against it and see the good thing about tanning. Not everyone has to be on our side, some people may like tanning naturally better to begin with.
Have you ever seen someone who was so usually tan that their skin almost looked leathery? Or someone who just couldn't go a day without tanning? On average over one million people spend their money on tanning. Unfortunately, this isn't just a fun hobby, these people are at risk. People who tan excessively are what dermatologist call tanorexics. People who are tanorexics see their complexion and wish it were different. They feel self conscious when others are more tan than they are. Although wanting to be tan may not always be a bad thing many people take it to far. Tanorexia is a tanning addiction most young adults have that is caused by mental illnesses and is also a replacement for drugs and alcohol, and leads to horrible diseases such as skin cancer.
As consenting adults, people should be able to use tanning beds at their free will. Knowing the harmful side effects and conditions tanning beds can cause, people should be able to choose to use them, considerably like cigarettes (Should Tanning Beds Be Banned?). Telling citizens they cannot use tanning beds is unconstitutional and violates their freedom rights and their right to choose how to treat their bodies. Banning tanning beds will also close down business which is unfair to business owners. With businesses closing down, more people will be dependent on government programs and will eventually cause the government debt to
Thesis: When an artificial reef is made many just see trash going into the sea, however there are positive benefits that come from the making of the reef.
Artificial tanning has become a sub-culture for youths across the nation. Those who do not go tanning are a minority and those who do tan ignore the health risks posted in every tanning booth and bed in the state of Massachusetts. However, for Jim Rice, a middler chemical engineering major at Northeastern University, the health risks of tanning transformed into a frightening reality.
Many people think that is it possible to achieve a “healthy tan,” but this thought has been proven wrong. Overexpose to UV-A and UV-B rays from the sun lead to premature aging of the skin, as well as the possible formation of skin cancer, know as melanoma. An appearance of a tan is actually a stage of burning and damage to the skin. Although a tan may be desirable to many, the fact remains that more people need to be educated on the dangers of the sun’s harmful rays, and the possible health complications of overexposure.
30 million people are expected to go tanning this year (“Tanning poses risks” 1). That means that 30 million people are putting themselves up for the risk of skin cancer, premature aging, and they are putting themselves in a possible unsanitary environment. The tanning industry wants a person to think that the only thing that tanning can do for them is to make them bronze and beautiful. When in reality, it has the opposite effect. People need to know what they are doing to themselves before they put themselves in a tanning bed. Many people choose not to acknowledge all of the harmful effects that tanning can have on your body. They think that it won’t happen to them. But, I will give facts and statistics to show that everyone is at risk of the possible outcomes that come from using a tanning bed. There are 1 million new cases of skin cancer found each year (“No Teen tanning” 1). We need to make that number go down. If we make a law that makes a person have to be over 18 to go tanning, many lives would be saved.
Although it takes years for the cancer to show up in people’s system and although it takes years for it to affect the victim, it is still very much alive amongst the person’s body. This affects adults especially because most adults will begin to disregard the fact that tanning has consequences because they are at later stages in life and the fact that the skin cancer does not show up for years gives them the confidence that by the time that the cancer shows up they will already be in their later stages in life. Another reason why it affects adults differently is because adults don not fully understand the capabilities or the consequences that come with using the tanning beds. As stated by Victoria Advocate in her article: “Lykes urges his patients to be cautious if they do choose to use a tanning bed, because tanning beds are a relatively new innovation. "The sun has been around for billions of years, so we know pretty much what it does," he said. "The tanning booths have only been around for a short time, and we don't know the full impact of what they do yet." (Advocate 1). This goes to show that many people are exposed to skin cancer because most people do not have full understanding of what it causes. This is especially true when it comes to adults because for most of their lives when growing up, they were used to
Just imagine jumping up and down having a great time until you have to go home after breaking your leg in gym class because you fell on the trampoline. How would the gym teacher explain to your parents how you broke your leg. Maybe your parents would take you out of that school and transfer you. Would you want to be torn away from your friends just because of an injury during gym class. I am against the idea of having a trampoline in gym class because kids don’t follow the rules, we wouldn’t have time for it, and it is very dangerous.
