Fake Tanning Every young girl or woman in America wants their image to look like a Barbie doll. This perfection includes being extremely skinny and extremely tan. In order to achieve this Barbie-like image women and men have been using tanning beds or spray tans to alter their appearance. Tanning beds can prove to be very harmful to a person’s health and can cause extremely dangerous medical conditions, including the most deadly type of cancer. However, fake tans can also be used in a positive way for some people who use them sparingly. In the early 1900’s, tanning beds and spray tans became increasingly popular in other countries. During WWII is when women in America became specifically interested in fake tans, and that is when the first …show more content…
self-tanner was introduced (Applebaum). In 1979, Friedrich Wolff brought the first tanning bed to America, and ever since the FDA has regulated tanning bed use. Today a tanning bed is a device that emits ultraviolet light through several lamps which is supposed to mimic the sun’s rays. Tanning beds emit two different types of ultraviolet radiation which is UVA and UVB wavelengths. UVA are the longest wavelength and the type most prevalent in tanning beds. Most of the ultraviolet radiation is UVA and may be ten to fifteen times more intense than midday sun. UVB is the wavelength that can cause blindness, burns, and immune system suppression. Tanning bed supporters claim that tanning beds are seemingly harmless compared to the sun’s ultraviolet light.
As consenting adults, people should be able to use tanning beds at their free will. Knowing the harmful side effects and conditions tanning beds can cause, people should be able to choose to use them, considerably like cigarettes (Should Tanning Beds Be Banned?). Telling citizens they cannot use tanning beds is unconstitutional and violates their freedom rights and their right to choose how to treat their bodies. Banning tanning beds will also close down business which is unfair to business owners. With businesses closing down, more people will be dependent on government programs and will eventually cause the government debt to …show more content…
rise. People supporting tanning beds and spray tans argue that a person only risks getting skin cancer when overusing tanning beds.
A benefit of fake tanning in tanning beds is that it can be a source of vitamin D which is prevalent in the sun’s rays (Should Tanning Beds Be Banned?). By using skin protectant and eye safety glasses tanning beds can add value to specific individuals. People who use tanning beds regularly, wear eye protectant and the specific sun lotion made for tanning beds so they will not be as exposed to these harmful effects. Some of the rays used in tanning beds are used for treatment of eczema. Tanning supporters also state that it is proven to help some forms of acne by drying out the skin. Tanning beds and spray tans can sometimes be used for the greater good. For a glowing look, spray tans are often used on celebrities before a big event (Tanning Beds Should Be Banned). Spray tans are significantly easy to do and not harmful to the body as long as the person receiving the spray tan does what is asked of them before they get the
treatment. Tanning beds have recently caused masses of controversy to the general public, especially in fair skinned people. Even more specifically, pageant girls who tan year round. Tanning beds are known to cause many medical conditions including, different types of cancers, premature skin aging, immune suppression, eye damage, allergic reactions, and DNA damage. Melanoma is a very dangerous type of skin cancer that can be caused by tanning beds. Each year roughly eight million people die from skin cancer. According to the 2006 review by the IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer), “the risk of melanoma of the skin is increased by 75 percent when a tanning bed is used before the age of 35” (Indoor Tanning: The Risks of Ultraviolet Rays). According to recent research, the FDA is currently concerned about teens and children being exposed to tanning beds. Not only do tanning beds use harmful lights for a person’s skin, but tanning beds also intensify the rays. Tanning beds can also cause many other medical problems other than cancer. Photokeratitis, also known as snow blindness, is “a painful eye condition which occurs when his/her eye is exposed to invisible rays of energy called ultraviolet (UV) rays, either from the sun or from a man-made source” (What is Photokeratitis (Including Snow Blindness)). Secondly, tanning bed users can get eye cataracts. Cataracts are clouding of the natural lens of the eye causing possible blindness and other eye deficiencies. Another condition of tanning beds is skin aging which causes wrinkles, dark spots, and leathery looking skin. Aging of the skin does not always take place immediately after the sun tan or sunburn, but is a long term effect of tanning beds. Overexposure from tanning beds also can cause immune system suppression which can result in other major medical issues and result in higher risk of illness. People standing against tanning beds also state spray tans can harm a person’s health because they contain dihydroxyacetone. Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is a chemical that reacts with the top layer of skin to make his/her skin look like a tan. DHA induces DNA strands that contain bacteria (Teens & Tanning: Safety Information for Parents). Although it is not as harmful as tanning beds, it is still a risky choice to use these toxic chemicals on the human body. In response to these concerns, some states are considering banning tanning beds all together. Other states are considering putting an age limit on tanning beds as well to protect people from the ultraviolet wavelengths. The FDA is working hard to pass more standards to protect young women and men from using tanning beds and potentially being diagnosed with skin cancer and other harmful medical conditions. Even if people were to use tanning beds or spray tans, people should be made aware of the harmful conditions it causes and how to protect one’s self from these diseases.
For my summer assignment, I read the book Skinwalkers by Tony Hillerman. Skinwalkers is about a Navajo police officer named Jim Chee. The story takes place on the Navajo Reservation spanning several states (Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico). Throughout the book, Chee works with Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn to solve three seemingly connected homicides. Over the course of the story, the Officers find several strange bits of evidence, such as small bones and strange stories about things happening around the reservation. As the case progresses, Chee and Leaphorn discover that the motive may be much deeper than just hate, it may have to do with witchcraft. As the story concludes, Leaphorn realizes that Chee has been led into a trap and rushes
It is essential to recognize the relative perception of beauty products and hair treatments for different ethnic groups at the time in question. For the white consumer, the use of makeup was the major issue; the disreputable view of the painted lady had to be overcome. The black woman had a more complex situation regarding the products being offered. Hair-straightening and skin-lightening products could be viewed as an attempt to seem more white, and use of these products was thus charged with racial overtones within the black community.

Organic inks, which are my personal professional preference, are the safest on the market. These types of inks are typically derived from plant matter. Vegan inks are also in the same class as the organic inks as well and are also ranked just as safe as organic inks.Organic inks are also safe to digest. I personally have no plans on digesting tattoo ink, but if I planned on doing so at least I know that it is safe.
Individuals lying in tanning beds should consider an alternative to ensure a decrease in the chances of skin cancer and becoming addicted to the tanning bed. Tanning beds may cause you to look tan now, but the chances of skin cancer, becoming addicted, and damaging your body could potentially affect you for the rest of your life. Do not let tanning determine who you are, decide whether the benefit is worth the risk. Think before you tan.
Well-known magazines often have broad headlines that show off celebrities sporting bronzed skin, and these articles often throw around the words “healthy” and “glowy” in a positive context. With this influence subjected upon the general public, indoor tanning has become a popular recreation of American men and women alike. As this new trend continues to rise, medical researchers are beginning to pay close attention to the health effects of indoor tanning, especially when referring to tanning beds, respectively. Through many recent case findings and studies, scientists have linked the use of tanning beds to many dermal health problems including types of skin cancers that are deadly. Despite the fact that tanning beds are detrimental to the dermal health of its victims, the use of tanning beds is on the rise and growing.
Indoor Tanning beds are controversial and not without risk. The positives and negitives should be told straight up when going to a tanning salon. The risk of developing melanoma skin cancer from over exposure to UVA and UVB radiation has been proven and well documented by the medical field and research. There are a few benefits of using indoor tanning beds such as a positive mood boost, healing of some types of skin disorders and in the production of vitamin D. One must be educated about the use of indoor tanning before deciding to indulge and weigh the risks and benefits before making the decision to go tanning long term.
With UV tanning you can do it anytime of the year or for a specific event. The health benefits for UV tanning is that you can get vitamin D, which is an important part in your bone and muscular health. It also improves your mood and it improves your appearance. When you tan with UV lights it can help prevent you from getting the sunburn you would normally get when you go outdoor tanning. Since you don’t get much sun in the winter, UV tanning can help with being vitamin D deficient. When UV lights, lasers or lamps are mixed with medication it can help with ...
I tried out for color guard in March of 2016. My experience with joining color guard has been one of the best decisions that I have made so far in my life. Not only has it changed me as a person, it has changed the way I look at situations. It sounds weird that an activity could change so much in my life, but it truly has. And it has made me a better person because of it.
...udy done by the American Academy of Dermatology, 59 percent of tanners were unaware of all the threats that accompany using a tanning bed (Cassidy 2). Cassidy also states that this lack of awareness is partially due to the tanning salons not advertising all information about skin cancer (2). Many salons offer tanning lotions, which are much different than sunscreen lotions. While they may not advertise it as sunscreen, not all customers know the difference. Tanning lotion amplifies UV rays, causing one to absorb more rays more quickly. The lotion contains no sunscreen and does not protect the user from the radiation. Of course, such information is not presented when the salon may try to sell you the product. The unfortunate side effect of such misinformation is that people may contract serious diseases without knowing that those illnesses could have been prevented.
Indoor tanning is becoming a very popular “hobby”, but most people do not know, or do not care, about its dangerous side effects. Studies show that people who use tanning booths have a much higher chance of being diagnosed with skin cancer. If someone were to start tanning indoors before they turn 30 or 25, the risk of them getting Melanoma peaks, and if they start tanning before they turn 20 or 25, they are much more likely to get basal and squamous cancer.

There are no proven health risks of spray tanning as of right now; however the FDA is investigating the safety of the DHA component in the "Mystic Tan".
With all of the UVB and UVA penetrating your skin every minute you spend in this bed, it can really do damage over a small period of time. Over the past three decades, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined (skincancer.org). The International Agency for Research on Cancer, an affiliate of the World Health Organization, includes ultraviolet (UV) tanning devices in its Group 1, a list of agents that are cancer-causing to humans (skincancer.org). These facts should pop a red flag in your mind, and should be used as minimal as possible. Always remember as person dies every 52 minutes from melanoma (another form of skin cancer) that tanning beds help cause
Should cigarette smoking be banned for everyone in the United States? Why? Why not? Should those who chose their time smoking to relieve stress, personal enjoyment, or simply just because, have to lose their right to what makes them happy? Smoking tobacco products has been around for decades and in many different forms. Should personal rights be pushed aside to please those around us that disagree with the so called “disgusting habit”? In the paper The Washington Times an article caught my interest called”D.C. seeks bans on smoking in national parks” written by Steven Dinan. In this article he stated that “Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton wrote Park Service Regional Director Steve Whitesell saying she’s heard from constituents who fear breathing second-hand smoke while using national parks.”(Dinan, 2013) I don’t think they should. All throughout the world people do things that is not always agreed with in different cultures in communities but even religions. Some people believe eating red meat is a sin but should you take it away from those who enjoy it. We are living in the land of the free. Aren’t we? I am against the banning of tobacco products because not only is it a right as an American citizen to be able to smoke, it is a job for American citizens, and as long as smokers are knowledgeable about the product causes it should be a personal right to choose.
