Some people bird watch, rock climb, and run. Others knit, photograph the world, and collect baseball cards. Everyone has at least one pastime that brings them joy and motivates them. The world of hobbies is unbelievably diverse and contains activities that arrive with countless followers eager to pursue them. In order to obtain a hobby, a considerable amount of knowledge on what it entails, the desire to follow it, and the will to engage in it are crucial. A somewhat popular hobby among people of all ages is playing the piano. The requirements necessary to acquire this hobby are fairly uncomplicated. Studies have shown that it relieves stress. For example, some students who were studying for tests felt the need to take a quick break. They went to their keyboard and practiced a few songs for a bit to feel refreshed before going back to the books. This gave them the time to boost their energy levels back up and to refocus their brains. Studies also proved that playing piano can improve test scores. “Middle and high school students who participated in instrumental music scored significantly higher than those that didn’t in standardized tests” (cooperpiano.com). Another bonus to playing the piano is that the feelings built up inside of the player can be released. There are easy songs or simple melodies waiting to be learned and played that match the emotions of humans almost perfectly. Whether the pianist is feeling angry, hurt, overjoyed, upset, tired, excited, etc., there is a piece to fit the mood. There are many dynamics that can be used to portray the emotions, as well. It can serve as an escape from reality. Songs tend to tell stories, even without lyrics, and, because of this, piano happens to be one of the easiest instruments to tell stories with. Literally, the piano is a global instrument. In other words, certain countries are associated with certain instruments. For example, Italy has the mandolin, Ireland has the harp, the Netherlands has the fiddle, etc. The piano is a very common instrument and is not necessarily associated with a specific location. This is a plus because it means that there are resources everywhere. Figuratively, piano serves as a good first instrument because it gives the player a great sense of music theory. Music theory makes up a majority of the world of music. It introduces the pianist to sheet music and the practice gives him or her plenty of time to improve sight reading skills. This makes the optional switch to another instrument much easier. In addition to this, the piano requires very little maintenance. Another instrument, such as the trumpet, requires cleaning of the mouthpiece, the pipes, valve oil, grease for the slides, etc. It also needs to be tuned every other—if not every—time it is pulled out to be played. Piano’s maintenance requirements consist of an annual tuning and occasional cleaning. It comes with the advantage of a very wide pitch range which allows the player to develop a better ear for music, provides a spot on note when the key is struck, and serves as a great first sense of pitch.
