Across the country, people are awakening to the realization of our broken democracy. A resurgence of progressive ideology has sprung up everywhere in response to the electoral travesty that brought forth President Donald J. Trump. A collective concentration on empowerment through education seems to be at the core of the renewed progressive fervor. In Columbia, South Carolina Progressive Network's New Legacy Project is conducting "Wokeshops" throughout the month of April at Benedict College. The objective is to raise awareness and get the youth of the community involved. Last week's installment, The Sexual is Political, addressed the government's impact on funding for sexual health, sex education, sexuality, feminism, patriarchy, and more. The …show more content…
following is a breakdown of the conversation. Planned Parenthood Last Tuesday's Wokeshop began by clarifying Planned Parenthood's purpose, mission, and role in the communities it serves.
Dispelling misinformation is crucial, not only so young people will know when and how to utilize its services, but so they will understand why it needs to be protected as well. When it was founded more than 100 years ago, its main purpose was to provide women with the information and health care necessary to lead healthy, deliberate lives. Even now, most of its services are not abortion related.
Planned Parenthood offers comprehensive sex education; including unbiased information on sexuality and relationships, to reduce our nation’s teen pregnancy rate, which is still among the highest in the developed world. Additionally, Planned Parenthood is dedicated to providing all people with affordable, high-quality health care, as well as preventive care for unintended pregnancies, testing and treatment to diminish the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, and screenings for cervical and other types of cancers. Moreover, Planned Parenthood is a passionate advocate at the forefront of the Reproductive Health and Rights

Movement. Reproductive Health, Sexuality, and the US Government In the United States, women's health rights have always been an unnecessarily controversial issue, precariously teetering on the moral whims of mostly men, a fact that has been underscored by the recent actions of the new regime. A new law privately signed by Donald Trump gives states the latitude to deny certain federal funding to Planned Parenthood and other clinics that offer abortion services, effectively overturning a regulation finalized at the end of the Obama administration. The tie breaking vote that allowed the measure to be signed into law was cast by Mike Pence, a man whose personal beliefs pose an actual threat to the rights of every marginalized citizen in America. To continue their assault on marginalized groups, on March 27, 2017, the Trump administration repealed an executive order mandating that any business contracting with the federal government must provide documentation showing they are obeying all federal anti-discrimination laws. Initially, this executive order was delivered with a separate order that prohibited federal contractors from discriminating against LGBTQ employees specifically. By revoking the first order, the administration has nullified the second, leaving the LGBTQ community vulnerable to discrimination. Evolution of Feminism Next, the discussion shifted toward feminism and a brief history was given.
In the United States, the first wave of feminism began with the women's suffrage movement in 1848. With prominent figures like Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Margaret Sanger, it saw progress in women's reproductive rights and suffrage for all. However, its most notable contribution to gender equality came in 1920 with the ratification of the 19th amendment which gave women the right to vote.
The second wave began in the early 1960's with a few key legal victories which aided the movement's growth. The Equal Pay Act of 1963 was signed into law by John F. Kennedy to eradicate the gender pay gap. To further the goal of gender equality, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibited employers from discriminating against employees based on sex, as well as race, national origin, religion, etc. And the Griswold v. Connecticut Supreme Court ruling of 1965 legalized birth control for use by married couples, bringing another victory in the fight for sexual health and reproductive
rights. The 1970's also saw progress in this area. The Supreme Court case Eisenstadt v Baird made birth control legal for unmarried people in 1972, and in 1973, the Supreme Court case Roe v Wade legalized abortion. In 1974, the Women's Educational Equity Act was passed to prevent the discrimination of women in education. According to many historians, the second wave ended in the 1980's due to a fracture in the movement over sexuality and pornography. The third wave of feminism is thought to have begun in the early 1990's. This wave ushered in a new era wherein the movement endeavored to challenge societal norms concerning gender, gender roles, femininity, beauty, and sexuality, as well as the way in which the media conveys such messages. Third-wave feminism has embraced technology as a way to spread information more rapidly and reach a wider audience by utilizing the Internet and, more specifically, social media to amplify their movement. Radical feminism highlights the patriarchal roots of inequality between men and women and seeks to completely eliminate economic and social male supremacy from society. Because the political process is inherently tied to patriarchy, radical feminists believe in challenging institutions and existing social norms to undermine its cultural effects. The goal is to dismantle patriarchy and its toxic grip on society. Patriarchy and Toxic Masculinity Patriarchy is a social system which gives primary power to men based on the unwarranted assertion that men are better simply by virtue of being men. This includes control of property, social privilege, moral authority, and political leadership. Most modern societies are patriarchal, even if it is not prescribed by their laws. Patriarchy is not only harmful to women, but is also detrimental to men for a variety of reasons, and has a corrosive effect on society as a whole. One of the more malignant impacts it has comes in the form of toxic masculinity. The message boys and men receive is that they must be unemotional, aggressive, and dominant to be masculine. This affects the way men view themselves and their place in the world, as well as how they treat women and interact with other men. Getting and Staying "Woke" For people who are just beginning to open their eyes to our undeniably broken system, it can be exceptionally overwhelming. It is up to those who have been "woke" for a while to help guide others as they venture into the unknown. Many want to help but don't know where to start, and they feel powerless to change the system because they are unsure of how one person can make a difference. That's why events such as the New Legacy Project's Wokeshops are so important in communities. Not only do they bring people together, but they help educate the public on the issues, and empower people to take action. Education is imperative to empowerment.
There is a common misconception that Planned Parenthood is a center for abortions, and that is it. The truth is, only three percent of Planned Parenthood’s services relate to abortions. Planned Parenthood receives $500 million in federal funding and it is illegal to spend any of that money on abortion services. In CNN ’s article, "Planned Parenthood, by the Numbers”, there are clear statistics about how Planned Parenthood manages the money they receive and how a majority of their work focuses on
During 1830’s - early 1900’s, became the first wave of feminism. All women were taken for granted and realized they must fight to gain political power (which included the right to vote). Their agenda expanded to issues concerning sexual, reproductive, and economic matters. That was then when the women brought to light that they can contribute as much as men. The second wave was in the 1960’s - 1980’s, just coming out as soon as World War II ended. They focused on the workplace, sexuality, family and reproductive rights. During this the protest had often dismissed as offensive, outdated and obsessed with middle

Abortion has been a choice for people who have unwanted pregnancies for the last four decades. There is an error in this because abortion is murder. Many people have called for Planned Parenthood to be defunded by the government. Many say that if we defund Planned Parenthood that those in need of an abortion or other care, whether because of rape, incest, or simply an unwanted pregnancy would not be able to get the help. Those who support abortion are under the belief that abortion is not murder because they believe that life does not begin until after birth. But I do not agree with this, life begins at conception. If Planned Parenthood were to be defunded by the government it would not mean that abortions would become illegal again, unless Roe v. Wade were reversed, abortion would still be legal. All that would happen is that Planned Parenthood would need to raise
Planned Parenthood provides much important health care to women in the United States. Therefore the Government (State and Federal) should continue to fund the organization. PPFA (Planned Parenthood Federation of America) provides a high variety of service at affordable pricing to women, men, and teenagers. Planned Parenthood has been categorized by some government representatives as an organization that misspend funds as well as some religious systems that oppose abortion. PPFA have also supply communities with guidance, health services, abortion services as well as referrals for adoption.
The Women’s Suffrage movement in the United States began way back in the 1820’s and 1830’s. The feelings for women having the right to vote is famously exclaimed by Abigail Adams (John Adams’s wife during this time period).
Healthcare comes at a costly price, and many citizens in the US find themselves barely scraping by on their low-income earnings. So, they can’t always afford the necessary insurance to keep themselves and their families healthy. To help the underprivileged, “Planned Parenthood participates in a [federally] funding program called Title X… [This allows them to supply women] birth control, gynecological care, and other reproductive health services for women who cannot pay full price for health care services” (About Our Fees: Central and Western NY). This program does not pay for abortion, so in turn, abortion is their main revenue generator. Planned Parenthood is not just for women, though. They provide sexual and reproductive health care, education, information, and outreach to more than 5 million women, men, and adolescents worldwide each year. Getting the information out has two basic goals: 1. To let those who are underprivileged know there are options for them and 2. To lessen the need for these services, such as abortions and STD care, by educating those on the prevention of such necessities. Planned Parenthood does not just do this on their own; they correspond with many other affiliates to provide these educational programs and outreach to adolescents and
(plannedparenthood.com) Abortion has been an ongoing issue since the 1820s where people have been debating should abortion be acceptable or should be banned this issue has caused two different groups of form. These two groups are know... ... middle of paper ... ... ason to. At some point you got to take responsibility for what you have done and look at other options which is where I feel like Planned Parenthood does a good job at because they help the client weigh out there options and think of other ways to deal with the situation.
While the 1960s were a time of advancement for minorities, it was also a time of advancement for women. In 1963, Congress passed the Equal Pay Act, which outlawed discrimination in the workplace based on a person’s sex (Foner 944). To ensure that women would have the same opportunities as men in jobs, education, and political participation, the National Organization for women was formed in 1966 (Foner 944). The sixties also marked the beginning of a public campaign to repeal state laws that banned abortion or left the decision to terminate a pregnancy to physicians instead of the woman (Foner 945).
Also if you are against abortion this can benefit you as well. Two studies one from researchers in St. Louis and the other from researchers in Iowa provided solid evidence that access to effective birth control can make a difference in this arena. Both studies made super effective birth control methods available and affordable to local women over several years. And both studies resulted in major decreases in unplanned pregnancy and abortion. On the national level, almost half of all pregnancies in the U.S. were unplanned as of 2006, and 43% of those unplanned pregnancies ended in abortion.Of all the women in the U.S. who are having sex and not trying to get pregnant, two-thirds of them use birth control consistently and correctly and those users account for only 5% of unplanned pregnancies. The other 95% of unplanned pregnancies were to the third of U.S. women who weren’t trying to get pregnant but weren’t using birth control or were using it incorrectly or inconsistently. Another large group of people we can hit with these statistics are simply, women. Birth control has wonderful benefits for all teen or adult females who are sexually active. It can be great for their health being that pregnancy is a very risky business and can have a toll on
Even though we have become more socially progressive as a society, the struggle for eliminating the shaming of women who’ve received an abortion or use Planned Parenthood services continues and there right to abortion is an argument that persists because of pro life advocates and the socially conservative agenda found in the Republican party. Many republican politicians and conservative religious groups have made it difficult for women to emotionally accept themselves for choosing to have abortions but they make it physically and financially difficult for them to access those resources. Access to clinics who preform abortions has become more limited and difficult to acquire in recent years. Procedures for clinics providing multiple types of
Feminism, an issue that has been on the rise for a vast amount of time but didn’t make an official appearance until 1828. There were three different movements spread out from 1828 until present day. The second feminism movement which challenged historical attitudes not only increased opportunities for women, but also helped to expand their legal rights.
The first wave of feminism is more commonly known as the women’s liberation or women’s suffrage movement. First wave feminist’s main concern was in political power especially in terms of the right to vote, having a voice. They believed that changes within society could be made gradually within society to achieve equality rather than having to demolish the way things were and reconstruct them.
Beginning in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century women began to vocalize their opinions and desires for the right to vote. The Women’s Suffrage movement paved the way to the nineteenth Amendment in the United States Constitution that allowed women that right. The Women’s Suffrage movement started a movement for equal rights for women that has continued to propel equal opportunities for women throughout the country. The Women’s Liberation Movement has sparked better opportunities, demanded respect and pioneered the path for women entering in the workforce that was started by the right to vote and given momentum in the late 1950s.
The feminist movement helped earn women the right to vote, but even then, it wasn’t enough to get accepted into the workforce. They were given the strength to fight the journey for equality and social justice. There has been known to be three waves of feminism, each wave fighting for a different issue concerning women’s rights. Laws protecting sexual assault and alimony would be enacted, and women were now allowed custody of their children in divorce cases.
