The article I read talked about how football student athletes have successfully completed their freshman year. The question remained was why were the football student athletes successful in their freshmen year in college, what strategies took place, how did they grab the student athletes attention, and what suggestions would they have to assist in retaining students and promoting their academic success among first year student athletes.
Despite not being a football student athlete, but as a student athlete in general we live up to high standards. Meeting the University academic expectations on a daily basis is not the easiest thing to do. In terms of waking up in the morning to lift, go to class, and then go to practice in the afternoon you are done for the day mentally wise. But your day does not stop, you have that needs to be done for your classes, and that’s where the University holds you to a standard over students who are not student athletes. I am the first to admit that my freshman year as a student athlete was not the easiest. I thought many of times that I was going to fail, but the resources that were provided I used that to the fullest to be successful. The graduation success rate for division 1-college athletes has climbed to 86 percent. Two points over last year and the highest rate ever. (NCAA.org) Mark Emmert, who is the President of the NCAA, stated, “Student athletes continue to make important gains in the classroom, and the NCAA and its member schools are thrilled with their success. We also are proud of the role academic reforms have played in helping students earn their degrees. We will continue to support rules and polices that encourage students to progress toward education”
