Emotional intelligence has been defined as “the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and actions,” (Gantt & Slife 17). Psychologists John Mayer, Peter Salovey and David Caruso argue that some people have a greater emotional intelligence and a greater capacity than others to carry out more intelligent information when processing emotions. While on the other hand, psychologists Gerald Matthew, Moshe Zeidner, and Richard Roberts claimed that the concept of emotional intelligence, as it is defined now is flawed and has no reliable foundation in any of the models of human behavior such as biological, cognitive, coping, or personality.
As a supervisor in the military, I encountered an airman who had all the right qualifications according to the Air Force, but he was not able to complete his contracted term of six years. He survived basic training and a pretty intense two month technical school, but he only lasted two years in the Air Force before he was asked to leave. To work in the Public Affairs career field, he had to score well on the military entrance exam which means he demonstrated the cognitive abilities – a usual predictor of success. However, he was separated from the Air Force because of his poor social skills. This paper will discuss whether the airman's Emotional Intelligence (EI) could have been improved and the importance of a high EI to an organization.
A person’s EQ is an important skill that can be developed over a person’s lifetime. It is controlled by the part of the brain called the amygdala, which psychologists say is what controls emotion and then gives a person the ability to connect and communicate with others around you. Emotional intelligence branches out to all aspects of life and allows one to become better at controlling anger, making decisions, and keeping a positive attitude. Social awareness or skill at managing relationships does not guarantee the mastery of the additional learning required to handle a customer adeptly or to resolve a conflict. The ability to express and control our own emotions is vital for our survival in society and the work place but so is our ability to understand, interpret, and respond to the emotions of others. Usually our emotions give us a hard time, making things somewhat difficult, but we can’t really control them. Unless you are a pro with controlling your emotions, then that’s a different story. Normally though, we can’t control our emotions and behaviors well. Our social skills is also hard, our social awareness and management skills are usually a more difficult thing to experience. We all have the ability to understand our own emotions, but what about others emotions? We need to focus into not only our own emotions and behaviors but others as well. First step is to look at their expressions on their face, or the tone of their voice. We could probably tell their emotions this way as well as behaviors. With knowing their expressions and the change of behavior, we can find out what’s up with them. Make sure you yourself look into your own emotions and feel how they are feeling. If they are really upset for example, their face will look kinda down and not smiling. Their tone of voice will also be low and quiet, you need to also look at what they do. Are they hiding their face? Or making sad sighs giving you a hint that they are
The definition of emotional intelligence given by Salovey and Mayer (1990) focuses on the ability to understand one’s own and others’ emotions and also to manage one’s own emotions positively. On the other hand, Goleman’s definition (1995) covers more aspects, including 25 abilities and skills such as trustworthiness, communication and empathy. The former definition is more scientific and appropriate while the latter one is called the ‘corporate definition’ because its contents accommodate the interests of large corporations. However, the academic findings of the two professors are not widely known while Goleman’s edition is commonly accepted due to his best-seller book ‘Emotional Intelligence’ (Goleman 1995). The three articles I read for this debate measured emotional intelligence abilities for students in higher levels of education, yet it does not seem that age is a deciding factor of emotional intelligence towards academic achievement. Throughout the articles, they explain the importance of educators implementing stress-management and emotional coping skills into their daily schedules for students. It seems that students who have a higher emotional intelligence will perform better in school which is why emotional skills should be taught in both lower and higher levels of education. Different factors can contribute to people’s low and high emotional intelligence levels such as: self-esteem, interpersonal/intrapersonal abilities, and support systems.
An individual’s ability to control and express their emotions is just as important as his/her ability to respond, understand, and interpret the emotions of others. The ability to do both of these things is emotional intelligence, which, it has been argued, is just as important if not more important than IQ (Cassady & Eissa, 2011). Emotional intelligence refers to one’s ability to perceive emotions, control them, and evaluate them. While some psychologists argue that it is innate, others claim that it is possible to learn and strengthen it. Academically, it has been referred to as social intelligence sub-set.
