I. Introduction William Faulkner (25/9/1887-6/7/1962) is a special phenomenon of American literature twentieth century. He has never ranked higher than his real stature in the realm of literature, but Faulkner is an American giant. A famous writer from the Mississippi, William Faulkner is the world regarded as one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. Amazing! A man, who never graduated from high school, has never earned a college degree, has lived in a small province, in a state of America's poorest country, and in a poor family has written a series of successful work brilliant. In his life, he has written a lot of famous stories, one of them is “A rose For Emily”, it was the story I studied in high school, I have read and read it over and over again in high school to understand its meaning .It is not kind of story that we read once and know clearly about it. There are many things to discuss about “A rose For Emily” but I’m interested in writing about three things that have been impressed me in this story since high school : Anaerobic or space conscious waiver by Emily, Art of time , the horror elements and the size of the legendary character of Emily . II. Anaerobic or space conscious waiver by Emily Art space is a quintessential part of Faulkner's stories. Emily Rose's short stories build a unique art space, a legendary space. Jefferson is a village which appears in most of his work. In this village, the little house of Emily is very special. It is the oldest house remaining. The house has no number and is always closed. Moreover, it has bad odor. That house or should we call it an anaerobic space, when a person walks in, he always feels smother. She did not allow anyone to feel pity for her. As Faulkner might say Emily was a symbol of the humans never wither, always pride. Elements of horror: dead, iron-gray hair gives us a suggestion of the kind of man does not wither. Although Emily died but she has lived forever in the hearts and memories of people at the village of Jefferson, even the destructive love of Emily: killed her sweetheart to keep him beside her forever. Although she was always against the norm of the community, pride to place herself outside the norm, but the people of Jefferson from the old to the young man to the woman they love and respect her. Of course there are the whispers but people think of her as to think of a thing to be respected, maintained.
If we compare William Faulkner's two short stories, 'A Rose for Emily' and 'Barn Burning', he structures the plots of these two stories differently. However, both of the stories note the effect of a father¡¦s teaching, and in both the protagonists Miss Emily and Sarty make their own decisions about their lives. The stories present major idea through symbolism that includes strong metaphorical meaning. Both stories affect my thinking of life.
Faulkner provides the necessary pieces of symbolism, speckled through out the action of the story, for the reader to assimilate and assemble. Curiously, it is a broken time line that Faulkner follows, that allows him to achieve maximum effect at the end of the story. The placement of the conclusion or denouement at the beginning of the story, allows the curiosity of the reader to become strongly engaged on the character of Emily Grierson. As the narration begins with the funeral of Emily, the juxtaposition of the image received in the opening paragraph, is sharply compared to that of the information found in the third paragraph. Where in the first the town has come to pay respects to a fallen monument, in the third it is learned that she was really, "...a duty, and a care; a sort of hereditary obligation upon the town..." (276).

In this section her father has just passed away and was abandoned by a man who she wanted to marry. This section she becomes very depressed. In section three it talks about how Emily is starting to come down with an illness after all of the depressing events she had to endure. In sections four and five Faulkner describes how there is fear throughout the towns people is that of which Emily is going to possibly poison herself. A while later she then she passes away. In section five is when the truth is revealed to the public about her sickness. Faulkner uses the view point of an unnamed town member while he uses a third person perspective to show the general corrosion of the southern town’s people.
One may have heard the simple saying that “Love can make you do crazy things.” Many adults can confirm that the saying proves true; one could even spend a few hours watching CSI type of shows that portray the stories of two love-struck people becoming cold-hearted killers just to be with their significant other. Why would they be so desperate to be together that they would kill anyone who got in between them? Desperation so serve that they would even kill a loved one? It could be that as children they were deprived of love and nourishment that children normally receive. This deprivation of love led them to cling to anyone that made them think they were being love. The two works, share similarities and differences when it comes to the characters, the narratives point of view and reason for killing a loved one.
William Faulkner is widely considered to be one of the great American authors of the twentieth century. Although his greatest works are identified with a particular region and time (Mississippi in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries), the themes he explores are universal. He was also an extremely accomplished writer in a technical sense. Novels such as The Sound and the Fury and Absalom, Absalom! feature bold experimentation with shifts in time and narrative. Several of his short stories are favorites of anthologists, including "A Rose for Emily." This strange story of love, obsession, and death is a favorite among both readers and critics. The narrator, speaking for the town of Jefferson in Faulkner's fictional Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi, tells a series of stories about the town's reclusive spinster, Miss Emily Grierson. The stories build up to a gruesome revelation after Miss Emily's funeral. She apparently poisoned her lover, Homer Barron, and kept his corpse in an attic bedroom for over forty years. It is a common critical cliche to say that a story "exists on many levels." In the case of "A Rose for Emily", this is the truth. Critic Frank A. Littler, in an essay published in Notes on Mississippi Writers regarding the chronology of the story, writes that "A Rose for Emily" has been read variously as ". . .a Gothic horror tale, a study in abnormal psychology, an allegory of the relations between North and South, a meditation on the nature of time, and a tragedy with Emily as a sort of tragic heroine." These various interpretations serve as a good starting point for discussion of the story.
William Faulkner wrote, “A Rose for Emily.” In the gothic, short story he contrasted the lives of the people of a small Southern town during the late 1800’s, and he compared their ability and inability to change with the time. The old or “Antebellum South” was represented by the characters Miss Emily, Colonel Sartoris, the Board of Aldermen, and the Negro servant. The new or “Modern South” was expressed through the words of the unnamed narrator, the new Board of Aldermen, Homer Barron, and the townspeople. People who read about William Faulkner (1897-1962) know that he did not lead an easy life. He had the bad habit of drinking way too much, but above all he was very lonely. In "A Rose for Emily" we are guided through the life of Miss Emily Grierson, a newly departed spinster who has led quite an isolated life. She has always been regarded as a bit eccentric, but it wasn't until after her death, and the finding of a rotting corps in her bed, that people fully understood the magnitude of her eccentricity.
In Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" the character Emily is woman who never learned to be independent. Her dependent behavior is due to her father; his overbearing behavior doomed Miss Emily's future. Emily was raised to be very dependent on the only male figure in her life, her father. The relationship between Emily and her father establishes the pattern that would lead to her future actions toward the male figures throughout her life, Colonel Sartoris, Homer Baron and Tobe. Even though there were few males in her life, Miss Emily was dependent on them at one time or another and was unable to let go of the men that she encountered during her lifetime.
The theme of "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner is that people should let go of the past, moving on with the present so that they can prepare to welcome their future. Emily was the proof of a person who always lived on the shadow of the past; she clung into it and was afraid of changing. The first evident that shows to the readers right on the description of Grierson's house "it was a big, squarish frame house that had once been white, decorated with cupolas and spires and scrolled balconies in the heavily lightsome style of the seventies, set on what had once been our most select street." The society was changing every minutes but still, Emily's house was still remained like a symbol of seventieth century. The second evident show in the first flashback of the story, the event that Miss Emily declined to pay taxes. In her mind, her family was a powerful family and they didn't have to pay any taxes in the town of Jefferson. She even didn't believe the sheriff in front of her is the "real" sheriff, so that she talked to him as talk to the Colonel who has died for almost ten years "See Colonel Sartoris. I have no taxes in Jefferson." Third evident was the fact that Miss Emily had kept her father's death body inside the house and didn't allow burying him. She has lived under his control for so long, now all of sudden he left her, she was left all by herself, she felt lost and alone, so that she wants to keep him with her in order to think he's still living with her and continued controlling her life. The fourth evident and also the most interesting of this story, the discovery of Homer Barron's skeleton in the secret room. The arrangement inside the room showing obviously that Miss Emily has slept with the death body day by day, until all remained later was just a skeleton, she's still sleeping with it, clutching on it every night. The action of killing Homer Barron can be understood that Miss Emily was afraid that he would leave her, afraid of letting him go, so she decided to kill him, so that she doesn't have to afraid of losing him, of changing, Homer Barron would still stay with her forever.

While the city is changing around her, Miss Emily remains stagnant in time and retains the Aristocratic air once held by the “august” names. One example of this aristocratic nature is Miss Emily’s use of the “man-servant”, Tobe. Slavery was the system that gave the Griersons a since of hierarchy, and for Miss Emily, Tobe is the last remnant of this lifestyle; even 70 years after the end of the “peculiar system”. This shows the town’s inherited obligation to take care of Miss Emily and is due to her father’s status within the south. Again, Faulkner reveals this symbolism when he describes Miss Emily’s Funeral. When re-counting the funeral the narrator states, “The very old men- some in their confederate uniforms… talking as if she had been a contemporary of theirs”. These older men are some of the last confederate soldiers alive, and the narrator illustrates how they use Miss Emily as a final recollection of the Old
