PT 1-1 Movie Critique of “The Awakenings” The Writer: Oliver Sacks (book) Steven Zaillian (Screeenplay) The Director: Penny Marshall Shown: December 22, 1990 The first movie I ever saw on the month of October was a movie entitled, “The Awakenings”. If you would let me borrow a moment of your attention, I would like to express what I felt when watching this movie, what crossed my mind, what “awakened” inside of me. First of all, the movie was based on a true story, the illness is real, the people were real and the awakening, in fact, happened. It was about post-encephalitic patients and their battle to regain the lives they once lost. Their fighting chance was conceived by an experimental drug that had positive effects on one patient. The story revolved around Leonard Lowe, played by Robert Deniro, who was a post encephalitic patient with a caring mother, and his doctor, Dr. Malcolm Sayer, portrayed by Robin Williams. Mainly, the movie was set in The Bronx of 1969, the film’s setting centred mostly around the chronic hospital for the story focuses on that one time the post-encephalitic patients had the biggest response to any drug or medication. Leonard was a young boy when he started showing the symptoms and by 1969, he was an adult and still suffering from the disease and he was the first patient ever to respond miraculously to the drug. …show more content…

The movie was indeed great and it really is fun to watch but it just can’t achieve that 9 because of some problems I stated. One of the problems was I didn’t see the mother’s reaction when her son was yet again lost, that scene could’ve been great because it can make the audience feel the pain of the mother, to have lost, found then lost again. The film showed the mother being dismayed, for her son found a girl which was taking her time with him. Still 8 out of 10 is very high considering that I watch a lot of
