Katz 7 required to receive further licensing and certifications. There are options through the PhD level, and at this level would most likely include research and policy. As the senior population grows, there is a projected growth in this field of 25%, with an additional growth of 34% in the healthcare fields through the year 2020. The Boomer cohorts are indicated as a noted as a major contributing factor.
In addition to professional staff, there are many volunteers working in the field with seniors. One area that I found in my research on the topic of self-empowerment, are the new-age modalities that will spill over into the counselling of the aging demographic. Individuals like myself, who are called “light-workers” have a code they live and teach by. These are people who empower others by setting an example, and are here to teach the joys in living this kind of life. There is a creed we live by, and as more of these individuals begin to emerge to work with organizations, as therapists and social workers, this trend will continue to grow.

The theoretical basis in which I have chosen to counsel this cohort of seniors is Constructivism. There isn’t one particular technique, but rather it combines several different methodologies which help to transform the individual dynamic to create change. Constructivism is based on the belief that a person understands themselves, as well as their surroundings by looking at life events and reflecting upon them. Every individual comes to therapy with different life events, and how that person responds and accepts these circumstances determine what actions and decisions they make. Constructivist theory believes that we are do not passively receive a sense of knowing, but rat...

...wn lives. I am most aware os the fact that my generation, the baby-boomers, are going to have another big responsibility in being the change we want to see. That includes the obvious changes within the government as well as the economy and our environment. The baby-boomer generation was one of change, on many levels, and now that we have reached this next level of our evolution, the gauntlet is passed to us once again. If I am to champion other seniors to live their best life now, I am ready for the challenge.
In the words of Nobel Prize winner, Bertrand Russell, philosopher, mathematician, educator and social critic.
“To be happy in this world, especially when youth is past, it is necessary to feel oneself not merely an isolated individual whose day will soon be over, but part of the stream of life flowing on from the first germ to the remote and unknown future”
The quote itself can be translated into, an everyday person does not want to be happy and ambition. That person will settle with what will keep them alive. I agree with this quote for a few reasons. To begin, the people in today’s
We hear the expression “I wish I was your age again” from our parents all the time. Some young people ask themselves why their parents would even say this, as adults have so much freedom in terms of what they get to do. From teens’ perspective, we see being an adult as doing whatever we want, whenever we want without anyone telling us, “no.” That is not the case. From adults’ perspective, they see being a kid as not being bound by the chains of reality. The chains of reality being the actions of them having to go to work everyday, or even clean the house. There are no chains to imagination, a kids imagination is something that can shape and change. Then we realize that we stop using our imagination and then as we grow up, we start to realize the significance of that expression.Death is inevitable and we should always appreciate the good things in life. In the piece, “Once More To The Lake”, E.B
"The future was sunset; the past something to leave behind. And if it didn't stay behind, well, you might have to stomp it out. Slave life; freed life-every day was a test and a trial. Nothing could be counted on in a world where even when you were a solution you were a problem"1
The main theory that has largely influenced my clinical work at my current practicum site is cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). CBT asserts it is an individual’s thoughts and behaviors that directs the individual, so in this case my job would be to help the my client (individual) to find his or her thought that is driving his or her action(s). CBT is a fine dance; it may seem simple, identify the thought and replace the thought with a healthier thought. CBT is quite contrary to being simple, the techniques and timing is a fine juggling and balance act. To elaborate further, after a client has identified his or her thought that has been driving his or her action, they would need to restructure certain things in the their life that will help implement certain behaviors that will lead to a more healthier cognition.
He feels that growing old is not tied in with a negative context of falling apart physically, but about the positive aspects of growing emotionally and spiritually. From my perspective, this quote signifies that the person you are at the end of life is an accumulation of all the years compressed together, continuing to flourish with the knowledge of life’s experiences. Only with personal experiences come wisdom and
Older adults are a very knowledgeable population and have had a lot of life experiences. As people age, things start to change physically, mentally, and socially. It’s important to understand the process of aging, so that older adults can be taken care of properly. I interviewed P.R. who is a 71-year-old male that lives alone in his home. P.R. is a retired coal miner, and is currently living off his social security and savings. He lives close to both his daughter and son, who frequently help him out with things that are needed. P.R. was able to give me a lot of insight about specific challenges that he has experienced in his life that is associated with aging. I will be discussing challenges that P.R experienced physically, mentally,
I close this essay with a message to anyone who may be reading this or even have the same troubles as me. Life will always throw challenges in your way, you will be lost at times and even scared to death. But in the end you will prevail. “Each day of life is a gift, that is why it is called the present”
An important step to decrease an ageist attitude is to take a step back and recognize biases and preconceived ideas that one has about older adults (DeBrew, 2015). Recognizing biases in combination with furthering one’s education about the effects of aging and the specific needs of older adults will help increase compassionate care. To allow for effective interventions it is important that the nurse understand that illness and infection manifest differently in older adults than they do in the younger population (DeBrew, 2015). In addition, through ethnographic study it was found that when nurses spend time doing activities with older adults it helps strengthen relationships and sense of community between care providers and elderly patients (DeBrew, 2015). According to the article, “occupational therapists who worked with older adults felt ‘stigmatized’ by their peers because their work was viewed as less challenging and requiring less skill and intellect than caring for other populations” (DeBrew, 2015). To promote compassionate patient care it is important that nurses and other professionals get support from their peers to confirm that their work is not insignificant and looked down upon. Finally, include the older adult while creating the plan of care to show them that they are a valued part of their healthcare
In social work there are many theories that are very beneficial. I think that empowerment theories are something you must know about. First, I will list some reasons why these theories are special. Then, we will explore the history of it. Thirdly, the key concepts will give us an open insight on what we are really talking about. Fourthly, we will focus on the term critical consciousness. Next is defining the empowerment concepts in a social context. Finally there will be information on the social work empowerment theories more in depth.
“In my research, I have found that the issues people are dealing with now often have roots based on an earlier life that extends into this life. If not resolved, they will possibly carry them into a future life.”
Active ageing does not stop when elderly people retire as they can remain active through their families, peers and communities. Active ageing aims allows elderly people to realise and bring awareness to their own psychological, physical and mental well-being as the goal active ageing is the autonomy and independence of elderly people (Alexandre, Cordeiro, & Ramos, 2009).
Working with this population has its rewards for counselors. According to Neman & Neman older individuals have high levels of satisfaction and have the ability to comprehend and accomplish personal goals especially the important ones. It can be rewarding for counselors working with this population to reach these goals. It can be also rewarding for counselors to see someone in that age group that refuses to give up and they create new goals to achieve. Older population likes to talk and tell stories and counselors can use those stories to help their life or help others.
America is a country where everyone is free to live however they like, but it is possible for some people to live a happy life, if no one is around to take care of them. Nearly three hundred million people reside in the America, and out of those three hundred million populations, senior citizens make a 12 percent of the entire population. A senior citizen is commonly known as a person who is over the age of 65 and living on retirement, or known as social security benefits (Census Bureau). Ever since Franklin D. Roosevelt implied the act of Social Security in 1935, seniors are regularly provided a financial help, but seniors, along with financial help, seeks also accompany of someone who can look after them. Because of constantly growing needs of senior citizens, government as well as many non-profit organizations is working on helping seniors. Therefore I decided to research on this particular issue in my community, and I found that 64.5% of seniors are living alone in metropolitan area of Atlanta.
As generations come and go, they each gain a variety of individual values, attitudes, and goals that separates them apart from other generations. Each of our generations has played a role to get to where we are today. The older generations have played a big role in shaping my generation by offering more help to us. Because of all the help that the older generation offers my generation seems to have developed a different attitude about life and themselves. Along with open mindedness is easily seen among my generation. These numerous aspects all make up my generation and how we live today.
They are relating because vulnerability is their main reason why they got out of their full ability to get into recreation and leisure. Through my intervention, they would learn about all the benefits and outcomes that it will bring them. I will involve them in programs where they can be treated as a whole person not matter if they are elderly or having trouble with gender. Both will be able to grow up as a person and change their vulnerability to independence. Some of the programs that I will offer them are assisted-living facilities and counseling/emotional support which will provide them education about their current situation and see things with more clarity. They will be getting into groups with people sharing the same situation. They will realize that they have much more for what to continue and live which would help them see life in different perspective. Even though seniors don’t get to understand about counseling or any emotional support because of any mental problem that they have, as a therapist I will give them my best and the best experience by making them feel comfortable for whom they hav become and happy under my guide. I will inform their family about transportation and access as much as individual that belongs to elderly or gender
