The Automotive Mechanic
By definition a mechanic is a person who repairs or maintains machinery. An automotive mechanic is a person who maintains, repairs, and customizes automobiles. My father was a mechanic, and throughout my life I too have developed a passion for automobiles. Before the introduction of the assembly line by Henry Ford, there were no automobile mechanics. If an automobile owner’s vehicle broke down or required new parts, the owner had to maintain the vehicle themselves. Most automobiles were made using the same parts, so often finding spare parts was not challenging. However, when a spare part could not be found, people would often turn to bicycle mechanics, machinists, plumbers or blacksmiths to repair or fabricate the parts they needed. The earliest for of mechanics were treated more like servants and chauffeurs by the wealthy.
Those who could afford it would hire chauffer-mechanics to both maintain and operate their automobiles for them. These employees were much more independent than the average carriage driver or footman they superseded. Unfortunately the wealthy of the time were not so kind in the treatment of their chauffer-mechanics, and treated them more like servants; forcing the workers to use their specialized knowledge to wager better pay and privileges from their

..., and repair a problem. Normally automotive shops are open from nine in the morning to five in the evening. There is a wide pay range as automotive mechanics can expect to make anywhere from 30,000 dollars a year to 90,000 dollars a year paid hourly. The boss of an automotive shop is usually known as the shop supervisor or the shop owner and will have a number of mechanics who work under him or her and no one works under the mechanics.
Without automotive mechanics every automobile owner would be expected to maintain and repair their own vehicles. In today’s instant gratification society we can assume that without the automotive mechanic industry automobiles would break down more frequently and be less reliable. People may even still turn to bicycle mechanics, machinists, plumbers or blacksmiths to repair or fabricate the parts they needed to repair their vehicles.
The simple car that was easy to fix with some simple tools have now become as complex as a supercomputer on wheels. Most people today have decided that automobiles of today are too complicated and just send their cars to a professional for repairs. As of January 2013, the average age of a vehicle operating on the roads today is 11.4 years old. (Associated Press, 2013). People are holding on to their cars a lot longer than in the past. Although, some claim that it is because today’s cars last longer. There is no doubt that today’s economy is also playing a part in the public’s reluctance to part with their older vehicles. However, cars will always need repairs.
The time of the Industrial Revolution allowed little room for smaller companies to make a name because the big businesses had monopolies over certain areas of industry. Therefore, for a person to make a name for himself, he had to do so with ambition, money, reputation, and inner strength. By reason of an owner not possessing these qualities, then by the rigors of business owning he would be mentally crushed by the amount of work that falls upon the owner's shoulders. In addition, even though labor came cheaply to t...

Workers, who had traditionally lived with their masters in what was a very common social contract, began to work in prototypical assembly lines, where the manufacturing of a good lay in the hands of men in varying professions. Johnson uses the business of a shoemaking as an example of this stark change in business practices. In 1831, one shoemaker reported that ”most of the work” was done in boardinghouses. (39) By 1834, there existed distinct locations for the different steps used to manufacture shoes. Contractors in Rochester came to realize that making unique houses was inefficient and costly. Contractors began producing house frames with similar architecture very prolificly, and another group of men would build upon the house. The uprising of mercantilism in Rochester, according to Johnson, was a key player in dissociating worker from master. When masters realized that there was money in selling the goods made by multiple, separate workers at a profit, the definition of a “skilled craft” changed. No longer was a master limited to working with what he was skilled at. He could amass a workforce to make a product for him, and working men came out of contact with the final product. (41) As mentioned earlier, workers typically lived with their masters. In doing so they adopted the rules, tenets, and ideals of their masters. Masters in 1820’s Rochester were typically religious men who kept their workers in moral check. When masters physically distanced themselves from workers, usually by separating the management and work sections of a business, workers were put under less

The automobile industry was the reason behind the mass production of materials needed to construct a vehicle and new roads, by using the assembly line method brought about by Henry Ford. After seeing how successful the automobile industry was doing, it lead to an increase in motor related occupations like insurance, agents, and gas stations. Then, as the concept of sub-urbanizing occurred to many, the development of schools, commercial constructions, hospitals and other attractions grew enormously (Faue). As the automobile sales prompted many new industries for the need of common goods, the life of an American was changing quickly and even more jobs opened up. This domino effect that arose from automobiles was innovating America and brought more choices to the common person since he or she is opened to such vast markets. Ultimately, the automobile started a chain reaction that resulted in numerous new companies opening for business, which fueled the US economy.
