One of the major problems with the feminist movement is that it perpetuates many stereotypes which are simply not true but based on the behaviors of a small minority of those in the feminist movement. When a woman identifies herself as a feminist it should mean that she is in favor of not being discriminated against because of her sexBut when a woman stands up for herself in the workplace or in society at large, there are a lot of generalizations that people unfairly characterize them with.. They are assumed to be difficult, unhappy and dislike all men. The stereotypical feminist is a bra burning, hairy, metrosexual lesbian, who believes men should only be used from breeding until we find a way to do it without them. However, this is simply a use of stereotyping that generalizes all women and makes it difficult for real conversation to occur. Whenever a generalization is presented as a truth then the individuality of all women is jeopardized. This is particularly the case, even today when the issue of rape is mentioned. Often the legal system of the United States make it difficult on the victim and in some cased place the blame on them for an unwanted sexual attack, to the point that the trauma of the trial is worse than the attack itself. Women are interrogated like harden criminals instead of victims. One small mistake and a woman can be labeled a liar. Or it might be the case where the defendant swims fast, so he is not deemed a menace to society. Osmond and Thorne (1993) stated that Feminist respond by expressing their desire to “develop knowledge that will further social change, knowledge that will help confront and end subordination of women as it related to the pattern of subordination based on social class, race, ethnicity, age, and sexual orientation” (p. 592). The main goal of feminism is to create equality for women and fight against the labels put on them. Though throughout time feminism itself has been given a negative label. In today 's society women do not want to be referred to as feminists from fear of being labeled as a bitter man hating woman. This is definitely amplified in media today. Roxane Gay, author of Bad Feminist, brings up the idea of the essential feminist and where it suggests,” anger, humorlessness, militancy, unwavering principles, and a prescribed set of rules for how to be a proper feminist woman” (169). This fear of being labeled a feminist not only comes from fear of being thought of as angry or humorless, but from being attacked for not being the “proper feminist woman”.
Society has shaped these negative stigmas around feminists, which contain grains of truth, but can be easily be shattered when looked at from a universal perspective. I feel compelled to survey my surroundings anytime I am asked this question because I don’t want have views shaped of me due to the societal view and stigmas of feminist. So, every time I am asked this question, my answers do evolve and change depending on the situation I am facing. I would like for people to understand the universality of a feminist instead of drawing on these myths society has created. Most feminists are not angry; we do not hate on men, nor do we want to be like men, but rather would like to fight to have the same rights and opportunities that are awarded to men. I remember that sheer moment of slight panic even when I was asked this question at the beginning of this class. I wasn’t sure how to answer because I didn’t want to spark opinions which were only not my true belief. This emotional connotation associated with the term feminist that is present in our society has not only worked against feminists, but actually manipulated the true meaning of the subject. With the expansion of feminism in our society, these myths are ones I believe need to be changed instead of being used as a means of discrediting feminism. If we continue to allow gender roles to be perpetuated by religion and dominate our lives and our youth, men and women will forever be unequal. These causes must be addressed and be fixed. It is not only a political duty but this must be morally solved also. The solution to end rape and gender roles is upon us, if only society realized that. We have the power to end rape.
