The Artwork of William Hogarth
The artwork of William Hogarth is influenced greatly by social factors and the culture of eighteenth century England. In many of his works, Hogarth satirizes English society, rich and poor alike. His paintings and engravings depict the society of which he lived, with the costumes and ways of life of the times all shown in his work. Much of the time he is being satirical, exaggerating some of the faults of the people, other times he is being bitingly realistic in his views. It seems no-one is safe from his caricatures, from the lords and ladies, to slaves, servants, prostitutes, criminals and the poor.
Overall, his work shows the culture of a broad cross section of the people of England during this time, depicted often in a very funny way. An important note is that the engravings were produced from the opposite side as the paintings, so the engravings are seen with left and right sides in reverse from how they appear in the paintings. I will discuss how his works show many aspects of the life of England at the time. I will focus particularly on several of the series of works which Hogarth produced, because by telling a story with his work and not merely painting a single picture, he shows much more aspects of the society in which he lived than just the physical appearance.
Some individual paintings of Hogarth show many details of English eighteenth century society. Hogarth engraved Beer street to show a happy city drinking the 'good' beverage of English beer, versus Gin Lane that showed what would happen if people started drinking gin which as a harder liquor would cause more problems for society. People are shown as healthy, happy and hard working in Beer Street, while in Gin lane, they are scra...

Mortimer describes their laws, their medicine, their eating and dressing habits, and their entertainment. The purpose of The Time Traveler’s Guide to Elizabethan England is to give readers a vivid look into the past, into one of the most celebrated eras in history, with hopes that the modern era learns that “the past is not just something to be studied; it is also something to be lived” (Front Flap). Throughout the book, Mortimer makes several major interpretations of the society of
Direct-to-consumer (DTC) marketing of pharmaceuticals has grown increasingly in the past decade. The American public views prescription drug advertising for a wide range of medical conditions, including high cholesterol, depression, allergies, and erectile dysfunction. The Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates the content of these advertisements. Critics also have taken the position that the advertisements garner unearned trust from the public, are misleading, and promote unnecessary use of prescription drugs for common problems associated with aging. Proponents counter that DTC ads help eliminate stigmas associated with certain medical conditions, give patients an active role in their health care management, and encourages the doctor/patient relationship. There have been calls for bans on DTC pharmaceutical advertising, but the practice is protected under a business’s right to free speech. Regulation changes, particularly requiring the FDA to pre-approve marketing campaigns before they are released to the public, may be one way to appease opponents, while protecting the rights of pharmaceutical manufacturers to advertise to the average American consumer.
Thirteen years ago, the biggest energy company in the world experienced the biggest accounting scandal of the century. The company was called Enron and was doing very well in business but unfortunately, after many bad decisions were made by the executives of the company, Enron went bankrupt. The executives of Enron were essentially gamblers in the stock market. They took terrible risks and misreported their financial standings in order to encourage people to invest in their stocks. When the stocks crashed in 2001, these people fell victim to the lies and misleading information that Enron reported. Finally, Enron had reached the point of no return and was bankrupt. Arthur Andersen was a company that had a significant role in Enron’s collapse.
Imagine pondering into a reconstruction of reality through only the visual sense. Without tasting, smelling, touching, or hearing, it may be hard to find oneself in an alternate universe through a piece of art work, which was the artist’s intended purpose. The eyes serve a much higher purpose than to view an object, the absorptions of electromagnetic waves allows for one to endeavor on a journey and enter a world of no limitation. During the 15th century, specifically the Early Renaissance, Flemish altarpieces swept Europe with their strong attention to details. Works of altarpieces were able to encompass significant details that the audience may typically only pay a cursory glance. The size of altarpieces was its most obvious feat but also its most important. Artists, such as Jan van Eyck, Melchior Broederlam, and Robert Campin, contributed to the vast growth of the Early Renaissance by enhancing visual effects with the use of pious symbols. Jan van Eyck embodied the “rebirth” later labeled as the Renaissance by employing his method of oils at such a level that he was once credited for being the inventor of oil painting. Although van Eyck, Broederlam, and Campin each contributed to the rise of the Early Renaissance, van Eyck’s altarpiece Adoration of the Mystic Lamb epitomized the artworks produced during this time period by vividly incorporating symbols to reconstruct the teachings of Christianity.
Change management is associated with processes and mechanisms envisioned to change initiation within the control (Kotter, 2011). It involves in decision making to setting up a goal, develop necessary process and assigning the available resources to achieve that goal by effective planning and costing (Hayes, 2010). Therefore, change management focuses on whole business process and leadership directs the company toward its vision.
Change is something that presses us out of our comfort zone. Change is the only constant. It can happen in any sphere of life. But the most predominant of all changes is Change in the Organizations working methods.
The novel, Great Expectations, deals with the concepts of a ‘true gentleman’; where the Victorian idea, which is based upon birth, wealth, social status and apparel, contrasts to Dickens’ portrayal of a gentleman who is a person of kindness, humility and generosity. Dickens upbringing and early life allows him to understand the position of the poor due to their humble upbringing, which keeps them in the lower social class. His didactic message, what it is to be a true gentleman, is reinforced by the bildungsroman style of the novel.
When I think about managing organizational change; I think about everyone from the top-level down to employees doing the work. Organizational change is about adapting and revising business practices to make things perform better in the organization that will have a positive impact on the bottom line. Therefore, organizational change is all about changing and implementing changes in the management structure, business operations, and the company culture in a manner that it will reduce cost, minimize employee resistance, remain competitive for the future, but still deliver results today. It is like Charles Darwin’s quote “it is not the strongest of the species that survive, not the most intelligent, but the one most responsive
To be able to appraise the originality of eighteenth century English art, one must recognize its importance in history. A great painter to research is Thomas Gainsborough. His artwork was an important aspect of the art community of the middle seventeen hundreds. His paintings seem to bring brightness and color to a period in art that needed his creative boost. His combination of portrait paintings along with beautiful landscapes was not recognized in his time, but would be recognized as remarkable later in history.
The article “Organizational Change management” is majorly based on addressing and evaluating different literatures and views related to the organizational functions in terms of change management and the impact of behavioral changes and psychological contract within employee and employer on the proper execution and success of change management. The illustration of organizational change management has highlighted different approaches adopted and executed by number of organizations. The rapid changes in economical and political factors of external business environment as well as the introduction of complex and globalized business practices has influenced a number of businesses to accept the practice of continuous change management in terms of coping up with the competitive environment.
Land of the free and home of the brave. The United States of America prides itself on it’s reputation of all people being equal. However, it doesn’t pride itself on being in the top 4 of countries that consume the most soft drinks in the world (Insider Monkey). That being said, it’s no wonder that obesity is a huge problem in America. Obesity is not only caused by sugary drinks, including sodas, juices, etc; it is also caused by genetics, environment, and personal choices. Nonetheless, sugary drinks are a major contributor to obesity in America; because of these drinks, children and adults are becoming more and more unhealthy. A ban on the sale of soda in cups or containers larger than 16 oz, will decrease the amount of sugar people are consuming
In chapter 7 of her book, Bohls considers "Radcliffe's ambivalent obsession with aesthetics" in relation to Mysteries of Udolpho, and sees in Radcliffe's novel a critique (though a deeply divided one) of "aesthetics' patriarchal structure" (210). The question I want to pose is what does Radcliffe do for the labouring classes in Udolpho, how does she treat the lower class, another 'foil' to the construct of the (non-labouring) observer? The novel contains a number of devoted and kind servants - Annette, Theresa, Ludovico. Many kind peasants also offer their hospitality to Emily on several different occasions in her travels. In her landscapes we find idealized pastoral scenes of dancing, apparently carefree peasants (7; 64-65, for example). The picturesque impulse of ordering human figures into ornaments of a scene is clear in the novel; it is not, however, without exception. In volume I, chapter 5, Emily, Valancourt, and St Aubert come across a shepherd's family, in distress over a lost sheep; the shepherd's...
During the 19th century, a great number of revolutionary changes altered forever the face of art and those that produced it. Compared to earlier artistic periods, the art produced in the 19th century was a mixture of restlessness, obsession with progress and novelty, and a ceaseless questioning, testing and challenging of all authority. Old certainties about art gave way to new ones and all traditional values, systems and institutions were subjected to relentless critical analysis. At the same time, discovery and invention proceeded at an astonishing rate and made the once-impossible both possible and actual. But most importantly, old ideas rapidly became obsolete which created an entirely new artistic world highlighted by such extraordinary talents as Vincent Van Gogh, Eugene Delacroix, Paul Gauguin, Paul Cezanne, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Claude Monet. American painting and sculpture came around the age of 19th century. Art originated in Paris and other different European cities. However, it became more popular in United States around 19th century.
Class is a complex term, in use since the late eighteenth century, and employed in many different ways” (Victorian Web). Social class arises from different individuals-some rich, others poor, and others a combination of both. In proving one’s social class, the upper class would have to show their possessions to other individuals to show there superiority, but the middle classes would have to be industrious workers in order to provide for their families. Pertaining to the rise of social class through industry and possessions in the Victorian era, Dickens’ evidently shows the motif of the rise in social class through the characters of Great Expectations.
Organizational change occurs when a company makes a transition from its current state to some desired future state. Managing organizational change is the process of planning and implementing change in organizations in such a way as to minimize employee resistance and cost to the organization while simultaneously maximizing the effectiveness of the change effort.
