Every human being ever born was placed here for a special reason that some realize while others do not.The common theme of The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and "Sonnet XXIX" by William Shakespeare is about how people should try to discover who they are and why exactly they were placed on this earth. This theme is developed by both of the authors by their writing styles incorporating Imagery throughout each story. Coelho and Shakespeare also use literary devices throughout both of their works with symbolism being the most prolific. In both The Alchemist and Sonnet XXIX each of the protagonists are tasked with taking a enduring journey in order to grow as a person and to learn what they truly want out of the one life they have. Symbolism and irony are used in order to hint at a deeper meaning within the text. The use of symbolism and irony allows for what seems like a simple story to turn into a more complexed narrative. “Take theses’, said the old man holding out a white stone and a black stone that had been embedded at the center of the breastplate.”(Coelho 30) When first reading this a reader may think that the king of Salem is just giving the boy two stones. However, after further thought or reading the reader will realize that the two stones symbolize that the king will be with the boy throughout his journey. In “Sonnet XXIX” there is symbolism in the lines “Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising, Haply I think on thee, and then my state, Like to the lark at break of day arising From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven's gate;” (Shakespeare 9-12) Where the man is realizing that he is worth something and begins to cheer up. The authors Paulo Coelho and William Shakespeare drive this theme through using imagery, symbolism, irony, and the actions of the characters as the protagonist complete their journeys. The authors use imagery to describe the journeys that the protagonists are on. While adding symbolism and irony to had a deeper meaning to the works for the readers to make their own assumptions on what the symbolism might be or how a change in the story might be ironic. The authors use the actions of the characters in order to show how the characters thoughts and responses to situations changed throughout the story.
