The Airbus Affair was one of the longest-running scandals in Canadian history (about 15 years). In 1995, Brian Mulroney was accused of collecting bribe from Karlheinz Schreiber who was a German- Canadian businessman. The allegation was made in connection to the purchase of Air-bus jets by Air Canada. The sale of the Airbuses was a contract and Boeing and Airbus were competing for it. However, the contract was won by Airbus in 1988 to supply 34 A320 planes for $1.8 billion (CBC news, 2009). What is the relationship between Brian Mulroney and Karlheinz Schreiber. What questions have been left unanswered now that the official inquiries are over? According to the Thestar.com in 2007, Mulroney and Schreiber met each other in 1980. Mulroney was introduced to the German-Canadian businessman by the former premier of Newfoundland, Frank Moores. Schreiber claimed he and Mulroney were personal friends but Mulroney said, it was just a business relationship (thestar.com,2007). The Airbus affair came into light when the Royal Canadian Mounted Police(RCMP) began an investigation on the allegation that Mulroney and the former premier of Newfoundland, Frank Moores collected bribe from the Karlheinz Schreiber on the purchase of Airbus …show more content…
planes to Air Canada. However, Mulroney denied these allegations. Karlheinz Schreiber claimed there was business deal between him and former prime minister Brian Mulroney which was worth $300,000.
The deal was sealed in 1993 and it was to make Mulroney lobby for him to establish a light armored vehicle plant in Nova Scotia Schreiber claims he provided Mr. Mulroney with three envelopes, each containing $100,000 in cash, over the next two years. According to Mulroney, he was paid in installments and it was meant for an "international mandate" to promote the vehicles on behalf of the German company Thyssen (CBC News, 2009). He has denied he was asked to do any kind of domestic lobbying for the vehicles (CBC News, 2009). Although, Schreiber claimed he gave Mulroney $300,000, Mulroney stated he only received
$225,000. It is interesting to note that despite Mulroney’s lies, he still got a settlement. He first denied about his relationship with Schreiber, he denied collecting money from him and later saying he did put was not the amount Schreiber claimed he gave him. Why would Mulroney hide the business transaction by collecting cash in envelopes rather than paying into his account. Even though he collected cash, his failure to declare it in each tax year showed he was hiding the deal. Oliphant commission reported that the judge could not accept Mulroney’s testimony that the acceptance of cash was an error in judgement and it was an attempt to hide the transactions. Why was there no signing of agreement or any documentation to show it was legal? Mulroney ended up getting $2.1 million for his legal and PR Costs. It wan unethical of Mulroney to accept cash stuffed envelopes on three different occasions. This is a form of corruption as there were no records about the money or evidence and it did not talk about the money until the allegations. This shows how some politicians use their position to get into shady deals. There might be other shady deals done by politicians that are unknown to the society. According to a poll conducted in Jnauary,1997, on how they think the government handled the case, 68% said they did a poor job and 58% said they did a wrong thing in settling Mulroney (Angus Reid, 1997). There are a lot of unanswered questions and secrets yet unknown about this scandal. There no further investigations after Mulroney’s settlement. An article by Globe and Mail in 2006 revealed that, the RCMP did not conduct a full investigation and they case was closed and there are still questions about what happened to the $10million Schreiber had to distribute in Canada (Globe and Mail,2008). Why was it only Schreiber that was jailed? Why is the government not interested in investigating further about the scandal? Why was Mulroney settled despite his lies and tax evasion? Karlheinz Schreiber was known to be into shady deals and was a criminal, so why will Mulroney be left alone after accepting cash from such person?
One of Mel Hurtig's mentors was George Grant. Foresaw the selling out of Canada and spoke about in his book Lament for a Nation which was published in 1965. He said as Mel quotes him in his own book:
...e to power in Quebec. This indicates that Quebecers supported non-violent methods in order to achieve independence for Quebec, rather than the violent methods of the FLQ, also indicating that the efforts of the FLQ would have been subdued by the Parti Quebecois. The death of Pierre Laporte was another unfortunate occurrence as a result of the War Measures Act which could have been avoided, yet some still believe his death is not related to the invocation of the War Measures Act. Justification is required for all actions which spark debate, and in events where the justification is provided under false pretences, someone must be held responsible. In this case it remains the Trudeau government. Trudeau may have had an admirable political career in which he made many wise decisions, however, the invocation of the War Measures Act in October 1970 was not one of them.
In conclusion, Canada should be thankful, not disrespectful, of Trudeau’s implementation if the WMA during the October Crisis of 1970. His actions were acceptable because of the fear presented by the FLQ, the public and governmental demands, and the end result of the October Crisis.

During the worst depression years in Canada, there were many people who tried tirelessly to get Canada out of the crisis she was in more quickly and efficiently. William Aberhart and his group of supporters had a plan that they were sure could help and even end the depression and its horrible effects. His theory was if a twenty-five dollar cheque was given monthly to each family, it would alleviate their financial fears and jumpstart the economy. Having confidence in his idea, he went to share it with both political parties. Unfortunately, both parties rejected the idea; saying money would only become more worthless. Even after running and being elected as Premier of Alberta, the resolution was not accepted because of the overwhelming responsibility towards the federal government.
even his opponents admitted "there does not exist in Canada a man who has given

Even though he is remembered as Prime Minister, Pierre Trudeau’s legacy did not start there. While his sixteen years as Prime Minister is said to be his greatest achievement, his reputation as a hard worker started after he graduated from the University of Montreal, when he landed a position as a desk officer for the Privy Council; he practiced law, specializing in labour and civil liberty cases –issues he later brought into focus of Canadians– from 1951 to 1961. During these years, Trudeau spent his time opposing the ‘Union Nationale’ government of Maurice Duplessis; he demanded both social and political change. “Trudeau sought to rouse opposition ...
Pierre Elliot Trudeau is perhaps one of the mostly widely recognized Canadian Prime Ministers. His contributions to the growth and progress of Canada stands forever engraved in the minds of all Canadians. Yet, in spite of his many contributions, Canadians share contrasting opinions of Trudeau. Frum (2011) says of Trudeau that “as a political wrecker, he was truly world class.” On the other hand, the results of a poll commissioned by the Harper government in 2013-2014 ranked Trudeau number one on the list of most inspirational Canadians . In this essay, I will provide an analysis comprised of three perspectives to support the argument that Pierre Trudeau’s impact on Canada was overwhelmingly positive because his legacy transcended politics.
Strong internal rivalry between the after-merged Boeing and McDonnell Douglas Corp is also contributing to company’s ethical scandals. As competition between each party gets stiffer, employees might tend to resort to ethical breaches to gain competitive advantages so as to outshine each other.

Boeing/Airbus Case Analysis Competition in the Commercial Aircraft Business. With only a few large companies across the globe (Boeing, MD, and Airbus), the commercial aircraft industry essentially exhibits the qualities of an oligopolistic competition with intense rivalry. Here is an analysis of competition in the commercial aircraft business using Porter’s Five Forces. Figure 1: Porter’s Five Forces Applied to Aircraft Industry. Barrier to entry: - High barriers to entry, to a certain extent, help understand the risks involved in operating in the aircraft industry.
In the case of Canadian Aero Services (CanAero) v. O’Malley, senior officers of CanAero, O’Malley and Zarzycki, were sent to Guyana to examine a professional opportunity. Zarzycki prepared an offer, for the Guyanese officials to be used for obtaining funding from the Canadian government. Zarzycki, Canada’s government and the Guyanese government agreed on the terms of funding the project and then created the procedure for bidding on the project. Promptly after this, both O’Malley and Zarzycki resigned from their positions with Canadian Aero Services. O’Malley and Zarzycki then incorporated a new company, Tera, that was in the same industry as CanAero.
