Therapy is part of the healing and treating process that people suffering from any type problems may need. To attain total recovery, some individuals require certain types of therapy. One of the most common therapies is through group therapy, also called group psychotherapy. Group therapy or counseling has become a popular method working with offenders. One of the most fundamental values to group therapy is that an individual is affected by the system in which he or she functions (Brabender, Smoler, and Fallon, 2004). Group therapy is an approach that involves a small group of members and one or more therapists with specialized training in group therapy. This group approach to therapy is designed to promote psychological growth and improve problems through cognitive and emotional explorations of the interactions among members, between members, and the therapist (Brabender et al, 2004). Furthermore, group therapy has shown to be effective with offenders involved in domestic violence, substance abuse, anger, trauma, and sex offenders (Hanser and Mire, 2011).
The first disadvantage to group therapy is the lack of one-on-one attention (Hanser et al, 2011). Correctional counselors or therapist should fully understand the problems of the offenders before assigning them to group therapy. Yakom noted that it is not a good idea to conduct individual psychotherapy in a group environment (Hanser et al, 2011). In certain cases, offenders who have difficulty talking within a group setting, group setting can be overwhelming, or intimidating; group therapy is not the proper course of action. In addition, some offenders require the one-on-one attention in order to examine the distress he or she is experiencing. Group counseling is a viable new option emerging in the school setting. It can be effective and cost-effective for the schooling system by addressing a larger number of students and can be used to address a multitude of topics that children often face. One benefit of group counseling in the school setting is that it teaches children important socializing skills with their peers, as students often learn best from each other (Pérusse, 2009). It provides support, assists with emotional and problem-solving skills, and empowers children to be help each other as well as receive help from their peers (Thompson, 2012). The group setting may be perceived as less threatening, it helps bridge the gap in trust for children by providing a safe environment in which children can connect with others, and it allows for interactions that builds on social skills and the development of empathy for others (Thompson, 2012).

While sharing and caring provide the basis for support groups, there's one benefit from group therapy that patients can't overlook. Simply put, it's the building of trust in others to help when help is needed. While caught in the cycle of addiction, trust is not easily given. In fact, many people dealing with addiction are paranoid. The lost of trust in the people around them promotes a lonely existence. One ‘therapy’ that has increased throughout the years has been the use of solitary confinement, which has many negative effects on the inmates.
Solitary confinement is not the solution to correct someone’s behavior because after getting out of jail they’ll be part of the rest of the society and knowing they won’t be able to function as a normal person is sad. Solitary confinement takes away the youth’s ability to develop, Extreme loneliness is a risk factor of mental health, as human beings we strive to be loved not tortured. Therefore, solitary confinement causes permanent harm to prisoner mental health. Everyone who has ever been in solitary confinement comes out with personality disorder.

As a student, practice is crucial to learn group therapy techniques. In order to achieve these practices, I attended 2 support groups of the same topic. Observation and attendance constructs an idea of how group therapy works. Attending this group was important because of the profoundness of its meaning and experiences I have witnessed.

In reflection on my learning experience in the group class, I have gained clarity on what sorts of competencies of facilitating group therapy, as well as in what areas social workers and students tend to feel most strong in my practice. Concepts In the first chapter, the therapeutic factors that stood out to me the most was instillation of hope. There is research that says most therapies operate through hope and conviction. Group therapists do all that they can to increase the patient’s belief and confidence in group therapy that works effectively. Also, it is important that therapists believe in themselves. The most important is that members learn from others who have similar problems how therapy can work for them in their life.
