The short film Gift (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DUYlHZsZfcddsee) is about a young man and his relationship with his father. Daniel Yam, the writer and director, has used a number of drama elements to tell this story. The use of character, tension and voice and movement all help to create meaning and communicate the messages presented in this film.

The characters in this film assist in in bringing the story to life (Dinham, 2011, p. 191). The actors convey the values and attitudes of the characters and have succeeded in making them believable entities (Dinham, 2011, p. 191). 192). The pace of the film is quite slow, with there being long pauses between dialogue. This gives the film a gentle and unrushed feeling. The lengthy pauses between dialogue encourage the audience to consider what will happen and be said next, and also gives them the opportunity to consider what is currently happening. The music slowly builds up throughout the film and comes to a climax towards the resolution, creating tension and producing emotion in the audience. The lighting throughout the film is dark and dull, adding to the gloomy feeling which urges the audience to keep watching in order to find out what will happen to resolve the unhappiness. The conflict between the father and son is presented in the introduction of the film, however the anticipation of how this will turn out creates tension. Questions are raised by the audience, such as why the son disliked his father, and what the money that his father was putting away was for.
