For most Americans the events of September 11, 2001 remain vivid in their memories. When asked, those who were old enough to remember can recall exactly where they were when they heard the news of planes crashing into prominent buildings in New York and the United States’ capital. Later the public would be told that these attacks were deliberate acts of terror against the United States by a group called al-Qaeda. This realization resulted in some Americans having feeling of anger towards those who practiced Islam, and even in some extreme cases these feelings even lead to violence (http://www.history.com/topics/reaction-to-9-11). By just studying one group, it is evident that there are variations of practices with in that group of Islam and the violent practices of a fraction of that group are not representative of the whole. In 2001 the Gallup organization conducted an opinion poll to gain an understanding of the Muslim World and their thinking. Their research concluded that out of one billion Muslims in the world only seven percent believed the September 11th attacks were justifiable and of that seven percent less than one percent were actually likely to commit acts of terrorism (Cite). What is significant about this study is the other ninety three percent of Muslims who believe the acts of violence were not justifiable. In conclusion it is evident that the acts of terrorist using Islam as a platform to justify their actions are not representative of the religion of Islam as a whole.
