Introduction

The Ancient Civilization of China ran from years 1600BCE – 1046BCE along the yellow river during the Xia Dynasty. It is known for a range of artefacts the most famous being the Terracotta warriors, a terracotta army believed to protect the emperor Qin Shi Huang. To a large extent the artefact of the Terracotta warriors has shaped our understanding of ancient China civilisation. This can be seen through an analysis of the context, purpose and significance of the artefact.

Main Body 1: Context
The context of the Terracotta warriors is they were in the Xinyang village, the Terracotta warriors where discovered in March 1974 by the farmers.
The farmers were digging a well because they needed to find water. As they were digging the well, they had discovered this rare, red type of soil that was 6.6 feet underground (Travel China guide, 2018). On the fifth day of digging the farmers revealed a life size terracotta warrior which villagers believed to be a ‘Pottery God’. Over a large period, the farmers continued to discover artefacts from the well which included bronze arrows, crossbow, and broken warriors. This demonstrates the hard effort the farmers put in to discover each artefact. According to John Roach the facial looks of the solders where unique and real looking. These sculptures are a form of funerary art buried with the emperor in 209-210 BC. These solders where loyal knowing Their purpose was to protect the Emperor, Qin Shi Huang in his afterlife (umich,2011).
