Imagine a world where the average person lives in fear of expressing themselves. Everything from art to the news they read is constantly scrutinized to be edited to what their government decides is right. They cannot read the books they wish because other vocal minorities deem them to be offensive and politically incorrect. Their government even goes as far as to decide what is and isn’t allowed to be consumed by the country. Censorship creates this dystopian world where freedom of speech and thought is not an inherent right of the people but only for those in power.
Censorship is the act of examining literature, media, etc and omitting the parts that people find offensive, politically incorrect, or unacceptable. Censorship occurs whenever

League of Legends, one of the biggest online games in the world is owned by company Riot Games, which is a subsidiary of a Chinese company called Tencent. Tencent enforces all of China’s censorship rules on League of Legends including the removal of nearly all alcoholic themes in the game, the iconic Grave’s cigar (Graves being one of the playable characters), and all depictions of undeath including flesh, skeletons, and blood. League of Legend’s art censorship has extended to all regions that currently host the game. Tencent’s art censorship hinders the artistic freedom that game developers have and basically says “you are not allowed to draw what you want only, what we deem to be acceptable.” Another example of modern day censorship is China’s censorship of any mention of the Panama Papers from all their media and online websites. The Panama Papers are a 2.6 terabyte document which was leaked from Mossack Fonseca, a Panama-based law firm, containing …show more content…
when Homer’s “the Odyssey” was challenged by Plato, the Philosopher, for corrupting the youth of Greece. To this day, books are still being banned with the excuse of them causing harm to young people all across the country. “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,” by Sherman Alexie, is one of the most challenged books of the 21st century and has been banned from many small communities and schools throughout the states. Banning this book is a fallacious attempt at protecting the youth. The censorship of this book is like the Prohibition in the United States. Prohibition was the act of prohibiting people from manufacturing, selling, storing, and consuming alcohol. Prohibition was first established to reduce crime and to protect people from alcoholism. The US government soon came to the conclusion that this was inherently flawed because not everyone who drank alcohol was an alcoholic or was more likely to commit crimes. Alcohol was also very easily obtainable from locations called speakeasies that were illegal nightclubs to make alcohol available to the general public. A reason why censoring Sherman Alexie’s book is comparable to Prohibition is that the book was banned to prevent students from learning about sexual terms, violence, and racism. This logic is flawed because like Prohibition not everyone who reads books about sexual terms or violence becomes a nymphomaniac or a criminal. Also like
One of the main themes of the novel Fahrenheit 451 is censorship. Censorship is n: the action of a censor esp. in stopping the transmission or publication of matter considered objectionable. That is, of course, according to the guys over at Merriam-Webster.
Censorship, as defined in the dictionary, is, in the case of a book, to take out things thought to be objectionable. Censorship is far more than that. This mere word prohibits us from all things
“Censorship is telling a man he can't have a steak just because a baby can't chew it” were the famous words of Mark Twain. Since early times censorship has had a critical role in history. Many individuals do not understand the true meaning of censorship because they were either brought up to see it as something different or they misinterpret it from how history looks at it. It has been misconstrued by history to be seen as a negative but in reality it is meant to be positive.
Censorship is a concept with several different meanings. To each individual censorship has its own meaning. Is it a violation of our rights or is it a protection for our well being? Censorship in the generic sense refers to the suppression of information, ideas, or opinions. It occurs in all forms of communication from technological media to print media. Each society, culture, or individual's belief is violated by the codes of censorship that our society instills.
What is censorship? An encyclopedia defines censorship as "the control of what people may say or hear, write or read, or see or do1." There are many reasons why people censor entertainment such as literature and music. Many governments or groups try to preserve their standards of morality by preventing people from learning about or following other standards2, commonly found in the two previously mentioned mediums. There are different ways to censor things. It can be on a local level, such as libraries refusing to carry a controversial book. It can also be on an entirely larger scale. In the 1770’s, French author Beaumarchais had two of his plays, The Barber of Seville and The Marriage of Figaro, banned by King Louis XVI.2 Back then, these plays were considered outrageous and sometimes blasphemous. To fully understand how our system of censorship works today, we have to look into history to see how censorship got started.
The term "censorship" originates from the Latin censere, "to give as one's opinion, to assess" (Culture Shock: Who Decides? How and Why?: Definitions of Censorship). In contrast to this seemingly simple definition, contemporary usage offers no agreed-upon definition of the term or its' appropriate usage, most specifically concerning the highly conteste...
Censorship is something that can be agreed or disagreed on in today’s culture. Censorship is the control of the information and ideas circulated within a society (What is Censorship?). The twentieth century is really when this became significant to the public. The public has censorship because some ideas may be objectionable or offensive to people. Censorship is everywhere that is available to the public, like television programs, news reports, books, music, and plays. This is prominent because producers, writers, and the government try to make everyone happy and comfortable about what they are watching or listening to.
Thesis: Although some people believe that censorship is adequate to select what things does the society will be good and can live around it while others believe that there should be no censorship because it takes away your right of expression of freedom.
Science Fiction can be seen as fictional but also suggestive of our world today, with implications of science, technology and history. With technology growing at a rapid pace, there may be a need to control what is put out. As technology is growing, so is the government with their need to censor certain parts of technology and its bearings. This can be seen in Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, citizens are conditioned to pay no mind to the past, allowing the government to control and censor certain parts of history. The amount of information they/re allowed to know is very limited, as it also is in our world today.
Censorship has been a big part of the world’s history and especially America’s history. One of the most quoted amendments to the United States constitution is the first amendment; “Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press ...” This amendment guaranteeing free speech, press, and religion is still heavily debated and contested today. Censorship, as a challenge to free speech and press has been allowed many times and has been heavily debated itself. Many people censor for many different reasons and in many different forms. Censorship itself is not always a bad thing and has in some cases been used for protection of the general population.
Censorship is detrimental to society. People can’t learn from their mistakes if we hide them. People can’t decide the best option if we say there are no options. People can’t understand each other if they don’t know what anyone is thinking. People can’t mature when they are “protected” from mean words. People can’t be themselves when they are being censored.
Censorship has been used by governments and influential groups throughout history as a tool for political and economic gain since ancient times. The Romans thought censorship was necessary to shape the morals of society to match up with government ideals. During the 1500's the Catholic Church banned certain texts that conflicted with the established religion from being read. In these times the idea of censorship was viewed differently that it is today. With powerful organizations limiting information it was often impossible for an average person to obtain literature or hear ideas that vary from state ideals, they probably didn't even know that their information was being censored. We live in a different age today, information is more readily available and censorship is often looked at as a negative practice that limits freedoms. That said, it still exists today and can be viewed as an obstacle to true democracy.
Censorship is the control of communication between people. This includes restrictions on what can be seen and heard. Mostly, censorship is practiced by Governments. But religious and political leaders and special interest groups also try to control the flow of information. Censorship violates individual rights, hides useful information, and limits freedom of speech.
Since the foundation of the United States after a harsh split from Britain, almost 200 years later, an issue that could claim the founding grounds for the country is now being challenged by educators, high-ranking officials, and other countries. Though it is being challenged, many libertarians, democrats, and free-speech thinkers hold the claim that censorship violates our so-called unalienable rights, as it has been proven throughout many court cases. Censorship in the United States is detrimental because it has drastically and negatively altered many significant events. Censorship allows governments more control of society than they already have, slowly progressing governments utilizing censorship to a dictatorship. Often times, this censorship can lead to immense rebellions.
