Applications of the Concept to the Current Job
The medication use process components includes:
- Prescribing
- Procurement
- Preparation
- Dispensing
- Administration
- Monitoring
The institute of medicine report revealed that errors in medical care are responsible for many deaths because many health care providers are not aware of their responsibilities. Medication errors responsible for numerous adverse outcomes including death. This results in high cost (emotional and financial). This errors have shown to occur in the following orders:
- Prescribing 39%
- Transcribing 11%
- Dispensing 12%
- Administering 38%

A new role, filled primarily by independent nurse practitioners, is that of “telemedicine presenter.” This is an adaptation of primary care skills where the focus of the activity is to acquire the necessary elements of the medical history and clinical findings so that they can be presented in a telemedicine consultation session with a consultant specialist. The telemedicine presenter is both the patient advocate in the consultation session and the hands of the distant consultant for doing procedures such as placing a stethoscope on the chest or positioning a video camera for a close-up view of a rash.
In support of all of these telemedicine activities, there will be business opportunities for telemedicine process consultants, who advise health professionals on the technologies, methods, and personal communication skills necessary to transform a local practice into a telemedicine-enabled practice. Whether such consultants would need to be credentialed and accredited is yet to be determined.

- In a number of countries, the implication of IT among various professions has created momentum for working in teams. The electronic health records has been a catalyst for accelerating this key element of health care innovation widely supported at the policy level throughout the world.
- Patient empowerment: Increasingly, people have access to their electronic health record. They can review information such as laboratory results and prescriptions to improve self-care. Particularly important for chronic disease management. They can see which providers have viewed their records, which allows them to monitor privacy.
