“Because all our lives we’ve been taught to lie” (Ballinger). Even if we never meant to lie it just happened. As little kids you lie so you don’t get in trouble, but you never figured that you would be caught in the lie and face a consequence for the lie you told. Overtime, people have lied for their own selfish needs or to protect others, but with those lies they know there will be consequences. Lying is justified when someone is in danger. To begin, people have lied to protect others. According to the t.v. show “Freaks and Geeks”, Daniel asks Lindsay to help him to cheat on a test so that he doesn’t fail his math test. This lying to protect self because Daniel cheats so that he could get a good grade. This is not justified because he should have studied instead of cheating and dragging someone along with him. Additionally, in the article, “Teens Do Their Share of Lying” by Loretta Ragsdell from Austin Weekly News , states, “I told her I had taken it to get it washed for her as a birthday present...she didn’t even holler about driving without a licence” (Ragsdell). This is an example of lying to protect yourself because Marianna lied to her mom so that she wouldn’t get in trouble for taking her mom’s car out without permission. This is not justified because she would have been stopped by the police and something worse would have happened since she doesn’t have a driver’s licence. Lastly, in the article, “It’s the Truth: Americans Conflicted About Lying” by NBC News, states, “ You’re overloaded with errands, so you call in sick” (“It’s the Truth”). This is an example of lying to protect yourself because instead of going to work you are taking care of errands that could be piling up and be a torture for later on.
