“A promising test for pancreatic cancer … from a teenager” by Jack Andraka
Jack Andraka presented the TED Talk “A promising test for pancreatic cancer … from a teenager”. It is about the story of Jack’s discovery of a way to test for pancreatic cancer in its earlier stages rather than the later ones like our current tests can only detect. The main point of the talk is to inform the audience and share the process Jack had gone through to finally create a test for pancreatic cancer due to the death of his friend’s uncle from this cancer. In addition, it was to inspire others to do the same or do something as equally as productive to help people live healthfully and fight this cancer and make a difference rather than waiting around hoping for a solution.
Jack started by introducing the story of how he got into finding a test that would work due to the death of his friend’s uncle. He then proceeded to tell his story of how he was able to create the new test to accurately find pancreatic cancer. While Jack was telling his story of creating the test, he was able to smoothly weave the information and the story together by telling the story while providing information about

the subject such as defining the terms he was using. For example, Jack was talking about how he found out which protein was related to the cancer and provided information such as what the protein was and what it did. Despite the fact he had to move from information to the story back and forth, the talk proceeded smoothly and there were very little interruptions in the flow if there were any. He was able to successfully blend information and story into a great TED Talk. However, there were a few problems with this talk when he weaved information and storytelling together.
When Jack does this, the information remains the main focus rather than the story and the story was sometimes clumped together without any information given. The story and information elements are there, but the whole process of creating this test was sometimes filled with just information. In addition, some of the things he talked about while trying to weave the information and story together were rushed and as a result, the story aspect of creating the actual test moved to getting it approved. Sometimes, the information seems to become the main focus while the story gets pushed to the side as if it was nothing, suspending the story as more information was added in between each part of the
story. This TED Talk taught me that information should be presented, but in a way that would keep a balance between the story and the information. The whole TED Talk should be going in and out of the story with information to weave them together successfully by not focusing too much on one aspect. Finally, the last tip I picked up was to spread out the story and information to keep the talk like a story and keep it moving with bits of information rather than going on a long explanation of information that would disrupt the flow of the story.
After he got out of college, Jack worked for a magazine company because he wanted to write a book. After a couple of years, he got writer’s block, so he starts to walk the Camino de Santiago for ideas. But, it doesn't help. When Jack meets Tom, Joost the Dutchman, and Sarah, they show him other perspectives because he always looks at things one way. These fellow walkers show him that sometimes there is only one meaning to the story. Sarah responds to something that Jack says by saying, “Well, Jack, maybe a dog fight near a cheese farm is simply a dog fight near a cheese farm.” Jack says excitedly, “AH! Okay... That's good. That... is very... good! Maybe I should adopt a more conservative attitude instead of trying to tickle meaning out of every curve in the road. Oh, Christ... I haven't had an original thought in months! Writer's block.” Jack is trying to find inner peace. He is trying to write a book, but he is getting into details that he does not need. Because of being over detailed, he can neither write a book, nor achieve inner peace with
Amazing ted talk by Scott Dinsmore. In October, 2012 at the Young Museum in San Francisco, Scott Dinsmore was given the opportunity to present a Ted Talk about his view on careers. The name of his Ted Talk was “How to find work you love.” Scott Dinsmore goal was to spark and give drive to the brains of those working for a pay check. He was aiming to encourage 9-5ers to go after careers that they truly enjoy and love. Having worked at a fortune 500 company in the pass, he realized that working to build your resume was a waste of time. So he created a company where he could motivate people and have them working in fields that fits their passion.
Eric Dishman’s Ted talk was very inspiring, especially for me, a person who is going into the health care field. The public health system he discusses in the video is so innovative and important when thinking about the future of healthcare. He talks about the three pillars that make up this system: care anywhere, care networking and care customization and of these three I think the most profound pillar is care networking. However, all of the pillars he discusses are important when making a big change in health care and improving the access, quality and cost of health care.
...mps out the fragments of Jack’s mind and fills it with his own devious thoughts. Jack is not a killer, and under normal circumstances Jack would never have been a killer. Murray is a killer, if just psychologically. He proves it once and for all when he forces Jack to “elicit the truths [he] already possess” (DeLillo 293), that a dier can become a killer. He disguises himself - “I’m only a visiting lecturer. I theorize, I take walks, I admire trees and houses” (DeLillo 293), and prefaces nearly every sentence with “in theory” or “theoretically” but he knows what the outcome will be. When Jack shoots Willie Mink, Murray is as guilty as if he pulled the trigger himself.
On that fall day in 2009, Kirsten did not know that someone as intelligent and articulate as Jack might be unable to read the feelings of others, or gauge the impact of his words. [...] But she found comfort in Jack’s forthrightness. If he did not always say what she wanted to hear, she knew that whatever he did say, he meant. (Harmon 1-2)
When it comes to Jack’s fear of not being chief, it brings out the worst in him and it has an effect on others. For instance, when the boys are deciding on who should be the chief, Ralph wins by a landslide. “Even the choir applauded; and the freckles on Jack’s face disappeared under a blush of mortification” (Golding 19). That is the first physical evidence of Jack being humiliated by Ralph and judging by Jack’s personality, he is not used to failure so it has a big impact on him. This motivates him to destroy Ralph and the rivalry between the two begins. Another point is that Jack uses fear and threats to control the boys. For example, when Robert tells Roger “’He’s going to beat Wilfred.’ ‘What for?’ Robert shook his head doubtfully” (Golding 176) it shows that Jack is violent and is using his...
The events, especially the end, of "The River” do not seem representative of grace; however, on a more thorough examination, God’s grace is evident, shown in the symbolism of the pig earlier in the story and in Harry’s non-Christian family. If Harry had not drowned himself that day in the river, there would have been a substantial chance that his family would have led him away from the faith. O’Connor also portrays the pig/Mr. Paradise as the devil when Mr. Paradise attempts to save Harry. Should Mr. Paradise have succeeded in saving Harry, Harry would not have been spiritually saved.
Jack wasn’t exactly the healthiest of children as a kid. When he was two and-a-half years old Jack caught the scarlet fever, both a contagious and deadly illness. Although Jack eventually got better, as a result of his history with the scarlet fever he was a very weak, and sickly child. While Jack was spending so much time in bed, from being sick so often, he read books, one after another. Jack had always loved reading history, and he had a passion for writing. He was even the only boy at school to subscribe to the New York Times. On the occasion that Jack wasn’t sick, he tried to live up to his brother Joe Jr. Joe was two years older, meaning he was stronger, faster, and smarter. All of the Kennedy children looked up to Joe, including Jack.
Jack’s reaction shows evidence of his happiness of his new found brother. The same man that played his brother in their mind games with friends and family.
The article the “The Patient Scientist”, tells the story of a doctor who has pancreatic cancer. The author, Katherine Harmon articulates some of the things that the doctor, Ralph M. Steinman went through as he was combating his cancer. Steinman was enthusiastically involved with his research, moreover the research he completed early in his career would come to assist him fight his cancer: “In 2007 he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, an unforgiving disease that kills four out of five patients with a year. In the end, the cells he discovered at the start of his career, and the friends he made along the way, would not only help him fight his cancer but would extend his life just long enough for him to earn the Noble Prize” (Harmon 261). Steinman was placed in unusual position: most people who suffer from cancer do not have the knowledge that he had. Despite his physical limits he choose to use his knowledge to continue h...
My written practicum will be on the causes of Pancreatic Cancer. Pancreatic Cancer is a genetic or environmental factor that critically affects the pancreas. This type of disease is considered to be “silent”, because the symptoms are often undetected. Thorough testing and critical screening can determine if there is an underlying cause or just a normal cycle of illness, such as the Flu. The cause of Pancreatic Cancer is determined to be caused by hereditary traits, environmental factors, as well as elderly age.
At the end of the story, Jack realizes that blending in with society is not ideal. He regrets the past decade that was full of loss and regret when it could've been full of trust and love. People may be tempted to make unwise decisions to blend in with society. But think about it: the world is like a crowded marketplace. If you don’t stand out, you are invisible. Unique qualities define your identity. Without them, you are not yourself. At least on Qingming, the mother’s poor spirit can rest easy, knowing her son is with her in heart, but that can never make up for the years of hurt and betrayal directed at
...e disease process of pancreatitis. This situation has changed my practice by looking more in-depth into disease processes and the complications I could be faced with. I need to beware of how conditions can change and always be one step ahead in foreseeing these changes to be able to deal with these situations when they arise.
A- I chose to do pancreatic cancer for my project because I love learning about the medical field and how the body heals itself, so I knew I wanted to do something with illnesses and diseases. I didn’t really know what specifically to do, until I started asking around my family, and they said to do pancreatic cancer because it has taken a lot of members in my family. On top of that, the Purple Stride, Columbus was right around the corner so it was going to be a lot easier to get some immediate progress on my project. I was hoping to learn basically what pancreatic cancer works, and what makes it so deadly, just basically researching cancer as a whole. I answered these questions by basically doing a lot of research, and by asking survivors things more personal the internet could not answer. My project is all
‘this time Jack’s voice came loud and clear and everyone listened.’” (p. 24) This is showing that Jack is becoming a leader and being made, which a born leader could have done as well. This quote also shows Jack decides for everyone on what to do when inside of the school they are stuck in with the sickoes. This shows that even though he was not a leader before he has been a made
