This Ted Talk talks about how depression is a very universal mental illness, but is constantly being stigmatized thus making it difficult for people to understand that depression is not just being sad. The Ted Talk brings up the fact that people tend to not talk about their depression, but if they do, others tend to turn a blind eye to those who admit that they are depressed. In class we talk about how there are various spectrums of certain mental disorders, and I think that depression can be included within this list. Often depression can show symptoms of Bipolar Disorders, insomnia, substance abuse, and or many more. I think that Kevin does exemplifies people who can be very social and outgoing, but tends to suffer in silence about their depression, until realizing that this has been doing much more harm than it actually does. I think that the Ted Talk speaker set the tone for talking about depression rather than sugar coating it, but I would like to push back to the idea that people can and should embrace their depression. I feel as though that his statement about the embracing depression, this is something that is easier said than done kind of situations. My thinking is that especially people who are young, the most common saying that people would hear ‘It’s just a phase’ often creates this self-doubt and causes young people to be more reluctant to want to talk to others about their depression because of the fear of being criticized. That being said, I would question the speaker how exactly did they were able to cope with depression, knowing that it’s still there? I think that this would be a useful answer for anyone of any age because of the fact Depression is so universal for many
